In first grade, I took a spelling test with the word “of” on it. O-F. “Of.” Every student that day spelled the word correctly except Malcolm, the slowest in the class. He had spelled the word U-V. “Uv.” I remember thinking “Geez, how silly is this kid ” But as I sat there, I realized that spelling “of” with a U and a V made a lot more sense than with an O and an F, which were corresponding to sounds nothing to do with the word “of”.
Why was this ever-so-simple word spelled in this completely illogical way The best answer I could come up with at the time was: That’s just the way it is, that’s what adults told me was the truth, and that’s how I have to spell the word to get it right and be a good student. So I better just shut up, look smart, and use an O and an F.
I didn’t know it then, but this little realization was my first brush with an understanding of what indoctrination was. All of us in the class that day so quietly and without question accepted a truth because it was backed by authority and tradition. It was the rule, and the world would see Malcolm as silly, and not the spelling.
The spelling of “of” may not be a worthy battle to build a life around, but this memory helped me become aware of the fact that the world is a place that comes with a lot of strange rules that we often fail to question. As a teenager, I called these rules “uvisms”.
Growing up, I recognized the presence of these uvisms in the expectations and assumptions pressed on me by my surroundings. Many of them are there for good reasons. Many are not. You don’t have to follow all of them. I believe in the misspelling of the word “of” and the necessity for each generation to question the assumptions of the previous.
4. What did the author think of Malcolm’s spelling afterwards
A. Reasonable. B. Childish. C. Creative. D. Casual.
5. What is the hidden reason for the author accepting the standard spelling
A. Desire to outsmart others. B. Preference for logical spelling.
C. Obedience to established rules. D. Determination to uphold the truth.
6. What does the term “uvisms” mainly refer to
A. Newly-generated creative concepts.
B. Widely-accepted illogical practices.
C. Intensely-debated spelling patterns.
D. Deeply-rooted childhood memories.
7. Which does the author try to advocate in the last paragraph
A. Exploring the unknown. B. Tolerating minor mistakes.
C. Developing critical thinking. D. Following the extraordinary.

In today’s digital age, children are exposed to a number of datafication (数据化) risks, including harmful profiling, micro-targeting and behavioural control.
Digital monitoring-based technologies enable parents to restrict, monitor or track children’s online activities. Popular apps such as Life 360, Google Family Link and Apple Maps, are widespread. However, such approaches have limited effectiveness in keeping children out of the boundaries of the digital space or reducing screen time usage. Meanwhile, the risks associated with these approaches emerge, such as their potential to affect family trust relationships or prevent the development of children’s self-regulation skills. With modern families increasingly struggling with their children’s relationship with digital technologies and lack of effective and clear guidance for them, new approaches are urgently needed.
It is for this reason that Computer Science researchers working on the Oxford Martin Programme on Ethical Web and Data Architectures developed the KOALA Hero Toolkit. It has been co-developed with families and children by Oxford researchers over several years in response to increasing concerns from families about the risks associated with extensive use of the digital technologies.
The toolkit has several key features. By providing families with insights into datafication risks, i. e. how children’s data may be collected and processed, and used to affect what they see online, the toolkit enables families to make informed decisions about their online activities. Through both a digital and physical component, and the provision of interactive activities and discussion sheets, the toolkit facilitates meaningful conversations between children and parents, promoting a deeper understanding of digital privacy and ethics (道德) . By providing worksheets that guide conversations and interactions with the toolkit among family members, with both children and parents involved in the learning process, the toolkit strengthens the family bonds and promotes collective problem-solving.
By assessing the toolkit with 17 families, involving 23 children aged 10-14, we found positive indications for our approach to encouraging active family engagement, instead of focusing on controls and monitoring. We hope to work with a larger sample to make it more adaptable before sharing the toolkit on popular app stores.
8. What do we know about digital monitoring-based technologies
A. They are unfriendly to parents. B. They need necessary improvement.
C. They strengthen family relationship. D. They offer parents a clear guidance.
9. What is special about the toolkit
A. It safeguards children’s online privacy. B. It promotes parent-child communication.
C. It places strict control on children’s data. D. It enables children to think independently.
10. What may the researchers do next
A. To better the toolkit. B. To contact app stores.
C. To target the market. D. To seek professional advice.
11. What may be the best title
A. A Popular Digital Monitoring-based App
B. Children’s Exposure to Datafication Risks
C. Families’ Change in Attitude to Datafication
D. An Innovative Approach to Digital Parenting
D
We often find ourselves struggling to control our thoughts, but why is it so hard to stop our minds wandering Research found our thoughts are less focused and under less control than we realize. In a 1996 study, participants reported more than 4,000 thoughts daily, each lasting no more than five seconds. In a 1987 study, people regarded 22% of their thoughts as strange, unacceptable or wrong. Then, is it possible to avoid unwanted thoughts, whether it’s an upcoming exam or an unpleasant conversation The answer is: maybe.
In a 2022 study, the researchers showed paid volunteers a series of slides displaying different nouns. Each noun was repeated on five different slides. As they viewed the slides, the participants wrote down a word they associated with each given noun — for example, “road” in response to “car.” Only the experimental group were told they wouldn’t get paid for repeated words. With this method, the researchers sought to create a situation when someone experiences unwanted thoughts.
When the experimental group saw each noun for a second time, they took longer than the control group to come up with a new association, suggesting their first response popped into their mind before they replaced it. However, they got quicker each time they viewed the same slide, indicating that their association between the given word and their first response — the thought they were trying to avoid — was weakening.
“We didn’t find evidence that people can entirely avoid unwanted thoughts,” said research leader Isaac Fradkin. “But the results suggest that practice can help people get better.”
Not everyone agrees that a slideshow of random words can tell how people stop emotional thoughts. Other research suggests that avoiding thoughts can backfire. When we do it, we’re sending our brains a message. This effort labels them as something to be feared, making them more powerful.
In the end, it might make more sense to take a mindful approach. “We can allow these thoughts to just be in our minds, not holding onto them too tightly and not trying to fight them,” said Fradkin.
12. What can we learn about our thoughts from paragraph 1
A. Most of our thoughts are valueless.
B. We tend to focus more on negative thoughts.
C. Our thoughts can occur and disappear easily.
D. We can’t keep our thoughts for over five seconds.
13. Why were the experimental group told not to repeat the related words
A. To collect more associations.
B. To make the task more challenging.
C. To create a competitive atmosphere.
D. To set up a desired experimental environment.
14. What does the underlined word “backfire” mean in paragraph 5
A. Have an opposite effect. B. Take back the wrong message.
C. Reveal hidden problems. D. Cause a mental breakdown.
15. What does Fradkin advise us to do with unwanted thoughts
A. Drive them away. B. Try to understand them.
C. Leave them alone. D. Learn to control them.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Our world faces a twofold challenge: feeding a population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050 while minimizing environmental degradation. Precision agriculture (PA) emerges as a transformative solution. ___16___ To put it precisely, it uses digital tools and real-time data to tailor farming practices-from planting to harvesting. This data-driven approach promises not only higher yields but also greater sustainability, making it a cornerstone of modern food systems.
One example is the use of drones equipped with multispectral sensors to monitor crop health. The drones fly over the fields and take high-resolution photos and data in a variety of light wavelengths. Weaker plants show clear differences in light reflection when compared to healthy ones. ___17___ They can apply fertilizer, water, or pesticides just where they are needed instead of randomly over their fields.
___18___ High upfront costs for equipment and software can exclude small-scale farmers, particularly in low-income regions. Data privacy concerns also arise as more farm operations rely on interconnected digital systems. ___19___ Governments and private sectors must invest in education and rural broadband expansion. Besides, collaborations between tech companies, universities, and farmers’ cooperatives can help speed up innovation.
As climate change intensifies, PA will play a critical role in building a food system capable of adapting to shifting weather patterns. Its ability to turn data into actionable insights may well determine whether we can feed future generations without sacrificing the health of our Earth. ___20___
In a world where every decision matters, there’s no better time to embrace this revolution.
A. PA is not without its challenges.
B. It functions as a one-size-fits-all approach.
C. To overcome these challenges, joint efforts are needed.
D. Using the information, farmers can make focused decisions.
E. It uses advanced technologies to optimize every aspect of farming.
F. By making data-dependent decisions, farmers can improve productivity.
G. In essence, PA isn’t just about growing more; it’s about growing smarter.

For many Chinese families, the first sign of spring is tasted rather than seen. Spring pancakes, spring rolls and the ancient idea of the spring platter all carry ____36____ same message: Renewal begins at the table.
As the first of China’s 24 solar terms, lichun, or Start of Spring, marks the turning of the seasons and reflects a long-held philosophy of eating in ____37____ (harmonious) with nature. Food follows time, and seasonal rituals anchor everyday life. The tradition of eating spring pancakes on this day — known as yaochun, or “biting into spring” — ____38____ (be) one of the most enduring expressions of that belief.
Folk tradition holds that ____39____ (take) a bite of a spring pancake is a way of ingesting (食入) the vitality of the new season, symbolizing hopes for health, prosperity and smooth ____40____ (day) ahead.
The custom traces its origins to the ancient spring platter. On the day of Start of Spring, people once ____41____ (arrange) fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits and pastries on a shared plate, eating together ____42____ (pray) for a bountiful year.

In the writing of ____44____ (celebrate) author Wang Zengqi, the beauty of a spring pancake lies in its restraint. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
What my father wore embarrassed me! I wanted him to dress like a doctor or lawyer, but he always dressed like my father, getting up before dawn every day to make breakfast for my mother and me.
We lived in South Texas, where my father worked as a repairman. He often wore a pair of jeans and a shirt, keeping his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. His boots were those with steel toes that made them difficult to pull off his feet, which I sometimes helped him with when he returned from repairing cars — his job that also shamed me.
I blamed the way he dressed. I felt that my classmates laughed at me because they’d seen him mowing lawns (修剪草坪) in cut-off jeans and black boots. My classmates’ families paid men to beautify their lawns, while their fathers travelled in the bay wearing lemon-yellow sweaters and expensive shoes.
He preferred clothes that allowed him the freedom to move under cars. So even when taking part in a school trip with me, he was dressed in his repairman’s suit. On the school bus to the campsite, all students on the bus happily chatted with their parents except me, who lowered the head, avoiding spotting my classmates’ mocking glance (讥笑的眼光) or hearing their jokes, which I thought was about nothing else but what my father wore.
I regretted telling my parents the school trip, and I was very angry why my mother had no spare time while my father happened to have a vacation. But my father failed to read my mind. He was very happy, whistling a tune along the way.
Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood, the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卷的相应位置作答。
When others were complaining, my father stood up.

The school bus restarted and everyone cheered.

You don’t have to follow all of them. I believe in the misspelling of the word “of” and the necessity for each generation to question the assumptions of the previous.

Dear editor,
I’m Li Hua, a student of Class 1.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear editor,
I’m Li Hua, a student of Class 1. In today’s competitive world, it’s not unusual for young people to suffer from mental problems. So I am fully in favor of establishing a Mental Health Club in our school.
For one thing, it provides a safe and supportive environment for us students to pour out our hearts freely. For another, in the club, we can gain professional guidance on how to cope with stress, emotions and relationships with others, which will in turn improve our well-being. Furthermore, a Mental Health Club will help foster a culture of understanding and break down the invisible prejudice against mental problems.
Personally, I think mental health is of equal importance to academic record. Hope that the Menta Health Club will be set up as early as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】When others were complaining, my father stood up. Dressed in his repairman’s suit, he had jumped off the school bus without hesitation before I could stop him. “Another chance to be laughed at.” I thought to myself. He examined the bus carefully, using his pencils, glasses and wrenches (扳手) in his breast pocket. It was quite a long time before he was back on the bus again, his hands smeared with oil but a broad smile on his face. He told the driver that there was something was wrong with the engine, but now it was ok.
The school bus restarted and everyone cheered. All the parents thumbed up to show their appreciation and those who once mocked me even smiled at me with admiration. I hugged my father tightly for a minute. Only then did I feel proud though he still wore those plain clothes. I finally understood one can’t be judged by what he or she wears. I no longer envy others having a father dressed smartly. I love my father, who teaches the profound truth: It is one’s character, not what one wears that really matters.
