In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often used to daydream about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to satisfy him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke, I was thinking, “At university, I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor (水手).”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I married my wife, Mary. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventures (冒险) in my life. The captain of a ship that is about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal.
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First, we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said. “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now very strong, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course (航线)!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

When Albert Einstein was 16, he imagined travelling beside a beam of light. This creative thought played an important role in helping him develop the world-famous theory of relativity (相对论). Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” He even considered daydreaming as “thought experiments”.
Daydreaming allows our minds to think freely about ideas, memories and future plans. It can be imagining space travel, looking forward to a holiday or recalling a happy birthday party. According to Chinese health research, proper daydreaming every day can improve both our health and creativity.
When we face difficulties or stress, daydreaming helps our minds relax and reduces worries and fears. For example, practising speaking in class in our imagination can make us feel calmer. It also encourages creativity and lets us explore a world without limits. Guo Qiang, an expert (专家) in thoughts and feelings, suggests that everyone should take time to daydream, as it can greatly shape our feelings in a positive (积极的) way.
However, we should not daydream when we need to focus (集中注意力), such as during lessons or crossing the road. We can do it while walking or brushing our teeth, starting with happy memories or imagining future successes. Research shows that people often find better solutions (解决方法) after a short break. So next time you have problems with homework, stop for a moment and let your daydreams bring you new ideas.

The Yellow River, known as China’s “Mother River”, is not that yellow in recent years. As China’s second-longest river, it has long been troubled by pollution and too much sand. However, thanks to environmental protection efforts, its water quality has improved greatly. In 2022, for the first time, the main part of the Yellow River reached Class II water quality. This means the water is clean enough for drinking after proper treatment. This high standard has been kept for years.
Numbers show great progress. Since 2018, the percentage of clean water (Class I-III) across the whole river area has gone up from 66.4% to over 90%. At the same time, the dirtiest water (below Class V), which was not fit for any use, is no longer seen. On average, the rate of good water in the area continues to go up every year. These amazing results show the environment of the Yellow River is getting better and better.
This great change did not come easily. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the river faced serious environmental problems. Factory waste, agricultural pollution and household wastewater made the river dirty. Many local fish died out, and the water became unsafe to drink, putting millions of people living along the river in danger.
To save the “Mother River”, our government took many useful steps. Over 17,000 polluted outlets (排污口) were strictly controlled. The Yellow River Protection Law came into effect in 2023, offering the river long-term support. Besides, large projects to stop soil loss were carried out on the Loess Plateau (黄土高原), and water projects like the Xiaolangdi Dam helped reduce sand in the water.
Today, the Yellow River is lively again. Endangered fish have appeared in its waters again, and rare birds like whooper swans now spend winter in the Sanmenxia Reservoir. The “Mother River”, once polluted, is now clear and healthy, bringing hope back to the land and people who depend on it.

35.最后一段空白后说“It is a fantastic way to rest both your mind and body in daily life.” (这是在日常生活中让身心得到休息的好方法),空白处应是对全文的总结或呼吁,选项A“Next time you feel worried or tired, give Colour Walk a try!” (下次你感到焦虑或疲惫时,试试彩色散步吧!) 符合结尾呼吁尝试的语气。
