These new AI art tools are all trained in similar ways—using massive collections of pictures with matching descriptions.The programs begin to create new images with a random pattern of dots.Step by step,they use their training to change the pattern until parts of the image begin to match the description.
Artists are upset that they’re now competing against computers for attention,prizes and jobs.It’s hard for a single artist to compete against all the art and photography appearing on the Internet.The images and descriptions used to train these AI programs were taken from the Internet,and therefore,the tools can produce images that aren’t appropriate.More importantly,the training images were used without permission,causing questions whether what these tools are doing is fair or legal.Once created,an artwork is protected by copyright.
The creators of the training pictures—the photographers, the artists, and even the people in the pictures—haven’t given permission for their images to be used.

They say that laughter is the best medicine and the effects of humor in medicine have long been studied.But what about the effects of humor on learning This is the question that “Humor in Pedagogy:How Ha-Ha Can Lead to Aha!” by R.L.Garner attempts to answer.In the article,Garner details a study where he looked at the effects of humor in asynchronous (不同期的) distance learning and discusses the benefits and risks of using comedy to teach.

Thanks to fossils found in North Dakota,scientists found a ginkgo has genetically similar ancestors dating back 170 million years to the Jurassic Period.“It almost went extinct.Then humans rescued it and spread it around the world.It’s such a great evolutionary (进化) and cultural story,” says Peter Crane,a ginkgo expert.
One theory for the decline of the ginkgo species began 130 million years ago,when flowering plants began spreading.They grew faster and attracted more pollinators (传粉者) than ginkgos.“It’s possible that ginkgos were elbowed out of the way,” says Crane.Already competing to survive,ginkgos began to disappear during a time of global cooling that began around 66 million years ago.By the time the last ice age ended 11,000 years ago,the remaining survivors were found in China.
Ginkgo trees are smelly.“My guess is that they were eaten by animals that liked smelly things.They then passed through their body and grew.” Crane says.Those same seeds may have helped ginkgo find favor with humans 1,000 years ago.Once cleaned of their outer layer,ginkgo seeds are safe to eat.It’s then,when the trees had long since disappeared elsewhere,that people in China may have begun planting them and eating their seeds.Then gradually ginkgos spread across the world.Now it’s seemingly naturally resistant to insects and high levels of air pollution.
Crane isn’t worried about its future,though:The popularity of the species will help it survive.“Though its status in the wild may be difficult to access,it’s a plant that’s unlikely to ever go extinct,” he says.

“It’s high time we recognized that animals also have to adapt to these changes,and this is occurring over a far shorter time than would have occurred through most of evolutionary time,” says Ryding.“The climate change that we have created is putting a lot of pressure on them,and while some species will adapt,others will not.”
Ryding notes that climate change is a complex phenomenon that’s been occurring gradually,so it’s difficult to determine just one cause of the shapeshifting.But these changes have been occurring across wide geographical regions and among a variety of species,so there is little in common apart from climate change.
Strong shapeshifting has particularly been reported in birds.Several species of Australian parrot have shown,on average,a 4% to 10% increase in size since 1871,and this is positively associated with the summer temperature each year.North American dark-eyed juncos,a type of small songbird,had a link between increased size and short-term temperature extremes in cold environments.There have also been reported changes in mammalian (哺乳动物) species.Researchers have reported tail length increases in wood mice.“The increases in appendage (附肢) size we see so far are quite small—less than 10%—so the changes are unlikely to be immediately noticeable,” says Ryding.“However,prominent (突起的) appendages such as ears are predicted to increase.”

The dive couldn’t have gone better.However,things changed as we made our way back to the boat.As we swam back along the reef,I noticed the current changing.As it did,huge quantities of trash and plastic began to flood the area.I saw small reef fish swimming amongst the straws,plastic bags and other bits of rubbish.I noticed that some of the fish were pecking away (啄) at the plastic.By the time we got back onboard the boat,there were bits of plastic floating all around us.It looked more like a trash site than the ocean.
When I got home,the first thing I did was to go online and research plastic pollution in the ocean.I was surprised to find out that over the past decade,divers and beach lovers have seen a lot of changes in the oceans.Even very remote locations were suddenly filled with plastic and other chemicals.Plastics were entering our oceans at an alarming rate—up to 12 million tons each year.This huge amount of plastic was wreaking havoc (破坏) not only on the environment,but also on the marine animals that lived in the ocean,such as sea turtles and sea birds.Some of them were sadly mistaking the pieces of plastic for food.Pollution has brought our oceans to the point of disaster,and unless we make a great change,then our oceans and all of its living things,will be at risk.
Since that unforgettable plastic-polluted dive,I have become an ocean supporter and spend my days trying to get the message out there about just how harmful ocean pollution is,not only to marine life,but also to mankind.

I reached out to the local divers,who immediately started supporting me.The following months saw us collecting pieces of plastic that we saw floating past and putting them in the pocket of our diving suits.If we were walking along the beach,we made sure to collect all the plastic that we saw on the sand.The effects were noticeable almost immediately.I could see the beach returning to its original beauty.However,I knew that these individual actions weren’t enough to stop the concerning plastic pollution crisis unless companies stopped producing so much plastic in the first place.
I decided to take it a step further to try and stop those companies producing single-use plastics. One way in particular stood out because it was easy to implement,yet its effects would be far reaching. Whenever I found a piece of branded plastic waste in the ocean,on a river bank or beach,I took a picture of it and posted it to social media, tagged the brand,and used the hashtag IsThisYours Since I started this approach,I have reached out to a dozen companies in this way and got more and more enthusiastic followers.We may be limited in what we can do,but I believe that a single spark can start a prairie fire.
