The first week of middle school felt like walking onto a giant stage (舞台) where everyone except me seemed to know their roles. I felt even 15 as others’ confident conversation made them seem bigger.
During the English class, my worst fear came true. The teacher gave us a task. “Let me 16 it,” she added, “you should find a partner to talk about our school life.” Soon, my heart began to race.
“Hey, want to be partners ” A girl asked. “I’m Sarah.”
I whispered, “O…Okay.”
“Don’t worry,” she said, “I get 17 when I give a speech, too. We can help each other.” Her words lit a spark (火花) of 18 inside me. Maybe it was a chance to prove myself.
We first listed our 19 : my fear of speaking in public and her trouble in preparing ideas. Sarah shared her past experiences to calm me down, and I helped 20 points. At first, the words often got stuck in our mouths, and the speech was all broken up. To speak 21 , we kept repeating the words after class.
22 on the morning of our speech, Sarah looked sad. “I worked hard at home, yet I forgot everything just now,” she said. For a moment, my old fear came back. However, then I remembered how much we had 23 together. “I’ll help you.”
When the teacher called our names, we began. Halfway through, Sarah stopped. I saw her hands shake a little. It was time for me to be her 24 . I added the next point. Sarah continued. When we finished, the class cheered.
“You saved me,” Sarah said.
“We saved each other,” I smiled. “We are far more than partners.”
Walking out, I realized that with a friend and practice, even the scariest stage is a place to shine—together.

The first day of seventh grade felt like stepping into a giant maze. Everything was too big, too loud, and too hard to understand. Lily held her schedule tightly as she walked through hallways crowded with students who seemed to already know exactly where they were going.
Her stomach felt uncomfortable when she looked for an empty seat in the dining hall. Every table was packed with groups of friends laughing and chatting like they had known each other for years. Lily thought about eating lunch in the bathroom just to avoid the embarrassing walk alone.
Then she noticed a girl sitting by herself near the window, reading a book with a bright blue cover. Lily took a deep breath and walked over.
“Is this seat taken ” Lily asked, her voice only above a whisper.
The girl looked up and smiled. “Not at all. I’m Maya.”
“I’m Lily. Is the book good ”
“It’s amazing,” Maya said, her eyes lighting up. “It’s about a girl who discovers she can talk to animals.”
Just like that, a friendship took root—simple, unplanned, and unshakable.
As weeks passed, Lily and Maya became inseparable. They shared lunches, walked between classes, and studied together in the library. But one day, everything changed during their science class.
Lily had worked hard on their poster about ocean pollution, but when Mr. Thompson asked her a question, her mind went completely empty. She stood there, face burning red, unable to speak. The classroom felt like it was spinning.
To her surprise, Maya stepped in smoothly, answering the question perfectly while giving Lily a warm and comforting smile. After class, Maya found her crying in the bathroom.
“I’m so sorry,” Lily said, wiping her eyes. “I totally froze. I embarrassed you.”
“Hey,” Maya said gently, sitting beside her. “That was nothing. That’s what partners are for—filling in when the other person needs help.”
Those words stuck with Lily for years to come. She learned that true friendship isn’t about being perfect together; it’s about being imperfect together and still showing up. Growth doesn’t always look like straight A’s or winning every competition. Sometimes, growth is simply learning to let someone see your vulnerable (脆弱的) moments.
By the end of that year, Lily wasn’t the scared new girl any more. She was someone who had learned that asking for help takes more courage than pretending (假装) to have everything solved. And that was perhaps the most important lesson she would ever learn.

If you are sitting, please stand up. Move your legs. Touch your toes (脚趾), if you can. Do anything but sit. New research shows that if you cut down on the time you spend sitting, you might live longer. Sitting less than three hours a day might extend (延长) your life by two years.
Peter is a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States. “We sit while we’re eating; we sit in the car; we sit while we watch TV. Many of us sit for many hours at work.” But, he adds, “that does not make sitting good for us.” The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs seldom give us the chance to move around.
You may exercise often. That does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. “We can’t throw away physical activity. It is very important. Even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, what goes on in the other 23-and-a-half hours a day is also very important.”
Changes are already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk slowly in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to use such desks to keep children moving.
Many companies may not buy a standing desk for everybody, but they’ll have a bank of these desks where people can go for an hour a day and answer their emails or talk on the phone. Peter and his team suggest some other simple changes: take walks at lunch time; walk to your partner’s offices and talk directly instead of emailing. All these activities may help you live longer.
31.How does Peter feel about sitting
A.It is helpful to our work. B.It’s a good way to relax ourselves.
C.It is not good for us. D.It is an important part of our life.

C.Take Exercise, Keep Strong D.Talk Directly, Improve Friendship

How much sleep do we really need each night While many would quickly say “eight hours”, science now tells us this isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. In fact, the amount of sleep a person requires to feel well-rested and function effectively differs a lot. This difference isn’t about personal choice or habit; it largely depends on our genes (基因).
Some people are born with a genetic feature that makes them “natural short sleepers” or “top sleepers”. They need only four to six hours of sleep per night, yet they wake up feeling fresh and can perform at their best. This ability is a great advantage in today’s busy world.
For over 25 years, Dr. Ptacek and his research team have studied sleep patterns (模式) in more than 100 families. At first, they focused on “morning larks” — people who naturally go to bed and wake up very early. However, they noticed something surprising: some of these early risers did not always go to bed early. Sometimes they stayed up late. This led to an important discovery: certain families showed characteristics of both morning larks and night owls (夜猫子). Researchers began to believe these people might have a special feature called “natural short sleep”, allowing them to be active with very little rest.
So far, scientists have found four genes connected to this feature, though there are probably more. These genes are rare; studies show that only about one in a thousand people is a true top sleeper. However, studying them offers hope for everyone. It may help unlock the secrets of “sleep efficiency (效率)”. Interestingly, natural short sleepers often report better health and show greater mental strength in surveys compared to those who need more sleep. Their ability to do well on less sleep suggests their sleep is of higher quality.
This brings us to a key question: what is “sleep efficiency” Recent studies are providing clues. In one experiment, when natural short sleep genes were put into mice with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症), the mice became more resilient. Even though they had the disease, they did not get sicker. Instead, they stayed active and showed no signs of illness. This finding suggests that understanding this biology could help treat not only brain diseases but also other serious conditions like diabetes, obesity, and even some cancers.
Dr. Ptacek describes the research as a large, unfinished puzzle. Each family that helps discover a related gene adds another piece. We are still searching for more pieces to complete the picture.
Sleep fills about one-third of our lives, yet much about it remains a mystery. We know it is important for helping our body and mind refresh. If we can learn how sleep efficiency works, it could lead to major improvements in health for all people.

The earliest forms of Chinese raincoats were made of straw and they were called “straw rain capes”. Now, few people wear straw rain capes anymore. But in the past, they were popular, especially among farmers and fishermen.
The straw rain capes were described in lots of poems and articles in different periods. They were everywhere in the countryside of China in the 1970s. But as society develops, it is slowly losing its place. Later, other materials were found to be more suitable for making rain capes.
Fan Licai, a woman in Zhuliangzhuang Village, Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province, has a special love for straw rain capes. It is said that she is the only one still making straw rain capes for a living in Ganyu District. The woman learned the skill when she was 12. When she was young, she could make two capes in three days, and make a living for her family. Now her children ask her not to make capes anymore. They think she should enjoy her time. However, she still continues to make straw rain capes to keep this traditional skill alive.
Making a straw rain cape needs 4 kilograms of straw, and for Fan now needs 4-5 days to finish a single cape. “Still, I hope more people will learn about this traditional skill. I wish someone would take it up and keep it going for years to come. It is not just a straw rain cape, but a special part of our culture and history.” Fan said.
