Dear Johnson,
I’m writing to introduce one of the China’s greatest scientist. The Chinese scientist I admire
most is Liang Jianyin, who is the general designer of the Chinese high-speed EMU.
Born in 1972, this great scientist came from a normal family. Since she graduated from
university in 1995, she has been committing herself to researching into the development of the
China high-speed railway. Afterwards, she invented the 300-350km/h high-speed EMU. It is
because of her extraordinary contributions to our country that China is playing an essential role in
high-speed railways all over the world. As a consequence, she was awarded many times.
Apparently, Liang Jianying has set a good example to us. Not only is she the pride of China,
but her works also belong to the whole world.

What do you mean ” he asked. “This house carries many beautiful memories, so I don’t want to
sell it. I feel lucky to have met you. You are a kind kid and you deserve it,” Emily replied
smilingly. She believed Justin would make good use of the house. Justin had tears in his eyes
when he understood Emily’s words. He thanked Emily repeatedly for making his dream come true.
Over the next few weeks, Justin worked tirelessly to fix up the old cafe. Then he added his

was also proud of what Justin had achieved. Gradually, the cafe became a symbol of hope and
kindness in the community.

As a small boy, Jim Corbett was amazed by wildlife. He taught himself how to seek
animals and birds by the sounds they made. Later, Jim became a tracker and hunter. The
authorities asked him to track and shoot man-eating tigers to protect people.
Between 1907 and 1938, Jim shot and killed nineteen tigers and fourteen leopards (豹). He
did this on foot, sometimes accompanied by his dogs, and he took many risks to save people’s
lives. The first tiger he shot was a Champawat Tiger, a tiger that killed more than 436 people. Jim
was regarded as a hero by the locals.
试卷第 1页,共 3页
Jim wondered why the tigers and leopards were killing people. When he examined many
cats that he had shot, eventually he made an important discovery that shocked him. They all had
injuries. Some had gunshot wounds from poachers (偷猎者 ). Poaching was common because
people could sell tiger skins for decoration and tiger bones for medicine. One tiger had a gunshot
wound in its mouth, and its teeth were damaged. Other tigers had injuries and then became sick.
The reason why they were eating people was that they couldn’t hunt other creatures to feed on.
After his discoveries, Jim became interested in conservation. He concentrated on his new
mission: saving tigers. He gave lectures and inspired people to respect wildlife - especially the big
cats, which he loved and respected. Two years after he died in 1955, the oldest national park in
India got a new name: Corbett National Park. It’s a shelter for tigers, leopards, and other
endangered animals. There’s even a species of tiger named after Jim called Corbett’s Tiger, of
which there may only be 350 worldwide.
24.Why did Jim Corbett kill tigers
A.Because he was the best hunter then. B.Because tigers hurt and killed people.
C.Because authorities needed protection. D.Because he could seek birds by sound.
25.How did Jim discover the reason why tigers attacked people
A.By investigating tigers’ teeth. B.By helping with tigers’ treatment.
C.By examining tigers with specific facilities. D.By looking at the tigers’ dead bodies
carefully.
26.What did Jim do to save tigers
A.He protected tigers’ habitat.
B.He built new shelters for animals.
C.He raised people’s awareness of wildlife protection.
D.He gave a number of lectures on tigers’ favorite food.
27.Why was a species of tiger named Corbett’s Tiger
A.For Jim’s generosity. B.For Jim’s contributions.
C.For their birth place. D.For their limited population.

The World Happiness Report, a United Nations agency report, tells how happy people are,
and why. Norway is the happiest place on Earth — beating neighbour Denmark from the number
试卷第 1页,共 3页
one position.
Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central
African Republic came last. Western Europe and North America took up most of the places at the
top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th.
The World Happiness Report mainly depends on asking a simple question of more than
1,000 people every year in more than 150 countries. “Imagine a ladder (梯子 ), with steps
numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top,” the question asks, “The top of the ladder is the
best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder is the worst possible life for you. On which
step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time ”
The average result is the country’s score — from Norway’s 7.54 to the Central African
Republic’s 2.69. But the report also tries to explain why one country is happier than another. It
looks at reasons including economic strength, social support, freedom of choice, and generosity
(慷慨).
This year’s report also has a text titled “restoring (恢复 ) American happiness”, which
examines why happiness levels in the United States are falling, despite continually-increasing
economic improvement. “The United States can and should raise happiness by solving America’s
social problems — rising inequality and distrust — rather than focusing mainly on economic
growth,” the authors said.
28.Which of the following is the correct order of the countries in terms of happiness levels
A.Denmark, the UK, the US, the Central African Republic.
B.Denmark, the US, the UK, the Central African Republic.
C.The US, Denmark, the UK, the Central African Republic.
D.Denmark, the US, the Central African Republic, the UK.
29.How does the World Happiness Report measure happiness
A.By asking a question. B.By having a conversation.
C.By doing scientific research. D.By carrying out an online survey.
30.What can we learn about America from the text
A.Its people live an unhappy life. B.Its economy is going downhill.
C.Its social problems are hard to solve. D.It has a lower happiness level than before.
31.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text

A.To explain the reason for being happy. B.To talk about America’s social problems.
C.To introduce the World Happiness Report. D.To discuss the policies by the American

The mobile phone might be a great gift, but it is stopping young people communicating
with the wider world and doing harm to their mental health. Should the young use mobile phones
or not It’s worth deep thinking.
Raleigh International, an adventure programme, has announced that it intends to ban
smartphones in order to enable their youthful participants (参与者) to actually get to know each
other a bit, instead of spending their evenings under the tent lit by a phone screen.
As people used to say there was a time when the whole point of travel was to come
face-to-face with an unfamiliar world. Learning to adapt to that world was “character-building”,
and an unfamiliar land was, in a sense, a training ground.
For example, the great twentieth-century explorer Freya Stark was a lone Western woman
in far Arab lands without using a GPS and a mobile. Yet through all her years of travelling—and
she was someone who travelled even in her 99th year—she learned to measure herself, and she
learned to measure those she met.
We live in a time when there are not many people like Freya Stark. For Raleigh
International participants, the communal (集体) experience without smartphones is important. A
survey during an experiment of its mobile-free policy (政策) found that almost two thirds of them
believed their mental health had improved as a result of being without their phones.
Raleigh International said that talking with people face to face leaves good memories on
them, because these memories come from responding to the real people and places around them.
Now, going back to the question, it’s clear that with so many smartphones around, we
should take advantage of the opportunity for face-to-face communication.
32.What does the underlined word “ban” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Improve the sales of. B.Change the style of.
C.Stop the use of. D.Bring in.
33.Why does the author mention Freya Stark in paragraph 4
A.To support the author’s opinion. B.To show the uselessness of a GPS.

C.To explain the difficulty of living alone. D.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
34.What is the finding of the experiment about the mobile-free policy
A.It places more pressure on people. B.It makes people mentally healthier.
C.It leads to more productive work. D.It makes communication difficult.
35.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Why Do the Young Like Mobile Phones
B.Is It Good for Youth to Use Mobile Phones
C.What Is the Impact of Mobile Phones on Travel
D.How Can One Start Face-to-Face Cooperation

Summer isn’t summer without the beach. For millions of Americans, hitting the sand is a
time to catch waves, enjoy the sunshine, build sand castles, have picnics, spot wildlife and go
exploring. 36 . Here are some tips on how to be a better beachgoer, ensuring your
favorite strip of sand remains lively.
Plastic isn’t fantastic.
One of the biggest contributors to beach litter is single-use plastic, such as chip bags, candy
wrappers and juice boxes. 37 . Put meals in lunch bags or boxes, and bring drinks in
water bottles or thermoses.
38 .
It doesn’t matter how much time and effort you spent building a sand castle or digging the
giant moat (壕沟) around it. If you are on a beach marked as a sea turtle habitat, fill in the moat
and knock down the structure. Otherwise, they can die if they fall into a hole and get trapped.
Respect the animals.
The beach isn’t a petting zoo. People who love the creatures of the ocean have a desire to
gain amazing experiences with them and have a connection to them, but don’t touch them.
39 .
Read the signs.
Signs posted at the beach aren’t optional reading: they are there to alert you to where you

can’t go, what you can’t do, and what you can’t take, so don’t mess with the local ecosystem or its
inhabitants.
All the actions above may seem like little gestures, but they will serve as an inspiration to
fellow beachgoers. 40 .
A.Destroy what you build.
B.Keep off a turtle habitat.
C.Plastic toys break easily, leaving behind chips and pieces.
D.Work together, and individuals can really make a big difference.
E.Buy food and drinks in bulk and put them in reusable packaging instead.
F.However, all that fun places stress on the coastal environment and the animals that inhabit it.
G.For example, if you take a starfish out of the water, even for 10 seconds, it could choke and die.

It was a busy day for 20 year old Justin. His hot dog stand (货摊) in the park was crowded
with customers. Suddenly, an old woman asked how much a hot dog was. “It depends on what you
want, ma’ am. They cost from $3 to $7,” he replied.
“I was just curious about that. I don’t want any,” she said before walking away. Justin
noticed she sat alone on a chair across from his stand. She kept looking in his direction, and he
realized the old woman wanted a hot dog but couldn’t afford one. So he quickly made one and

brought it to her. “I forgot to tell you that you’re our 50th customer of the day, so you can get a
free hot dog!” he said smilingly.
“Oh, is that so ” the old lady asked. “Thank you. I’m Emily.” She tasted it and was shocked
at how delicious it was. “It’s different from traditional hot dogs,” she said with joy. Justin replied,
“I love cooking, so I keep trying different things with my food. I’m glad you like it! Have a
wonderful day.” Then he hurried away.
The next day, when Emily returned to the park, Justin treated her to a hot dog again. Emily
refused because she didn’t have money, but he insisted (坚持). “I am so happy that someone is
trying my food, Emily. Your opinion matters to me,” Justin said. Though Emily was thankful for
his offer, she told Justin it wasn’t necessary. But he kept doing that every day. Later when they
chatted, Emily learned that Justin dreamed of expanding (扩大) his business and opening a cafe.
One day, Emily said to Justin, “I kept a count of the hot dogs you brought me, and you’ve
already spent $ 100 on me. Now it’s my turn to help you, boy. Come with me.” Emily led Justin to
an old building that looked like a deserted cafe. She explained that her husband owned it. After
her husband died, Emily was in poor health and there was nobody to look after the cafe, so it
closed down.
