Among the old lanes (巷子) of the Beijing hutongs, many were there hundreds of years ago during the Ming and Qing dynasties. They keep not only the traditional culture but also the way of life in the past. People can go shopping, eat delicious food, and watch the street life by visiting the Beijing hutongs. What’s more, it is a good way to learn more about the daily life of people in Beijing.
A hutong is a lane formed by traditional courtyard compounds (筑有围墙的建筑群) on both sides. The compounds are called siheyuan, meaning “four joined-together courtyard”.
The hutongs have interesting names. Some are named after people, plants or animals. Others get their names from old shops or special places. They are in these grey lanes. Kids talk and play there. One of China’s most famous writers, Lao She, lived in a siheyuan in the west of the city. He wrote his experiences into a book called Four Generations Under One Roof (《四世同堂》).
Now, Beijing still has about 400,000 siheyuan for people to live in. However, most hutongs are in great danger because of so many new buildings. So, we should try our best to protect hutongs, one symbol of traditional culture.

The next day is Picture Day. Poppy smiles at herself in the mirror (镜子) when she tries on her new dress. It looks so perfect that she hopes her photo will be in the yearbook forever.

“You are up, second graders,” the photographer calls. Poppy thinks about taking off her glasses.
