I love math, especially π! To celebrate Pi Day, I promised to bake three pies for the school event and organize a math game booth (摊位). But I also have to prepare for a math competition, help my class with a poster about π’s history, and volunteer at the library. Everyone expects me to do it all because I’m “the math kid.’ I’m so tired — I haven’t had time to just enjoy math, relax or hang out with friends. It feels like I’m carrying everything on my own. What should I do
IMO, you’re taking on too much, even for a π enthusiast. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Maybe ask classmates to help with the pies or the game booth. Celebrating π Day should be fun, not exhausting. Learn from π: it’s infinite (无穷无尽的), but you’re not. You need to set limits! You can explain how you feel and focus on what you truly enjoy. It’s okay to say no sometimes.
Making a to-do list really helps me when things feel endless — like the digits (数字) of π! Put the most important things first and see what you can share with others. And don’t forget to take a break — even Archimedes took time to think. You’ll enjoy math more when you’re not burned out and have energy left for what truly matters.
Notes: IMO = in my opinion

In a quiet neighbourhood lived Mohan Kaka, an old gardener in his seventies. Every morning at six, he looked after his beautiful garden — roses, jasmine, and a big mango tree. He talked to his plants as if they were old friends.
One day, Vikram, a young software engineer, moved next door. He was hard-working, always in a hurry and used to getting quick results. Everything in his life ran on instant gratification — fast food, fast internet, fast success.
One morning, Vikram saw Mohan Kaka planting a tiny sandalwood (檀香) tree. When he learned it would take twenty to thirty years to mature (成熟), Vikram laughed. “Kaka, you’re already seventy! You won’t even see it grown. Why waste your time ”
The old man smiled. “That’s not why I plant it.” He led Vikram to the mango tree. “My grandfather planted this when I was five. He never had a chance to taste its fruit. My father watered it carefully. Now I sit under its shade (树荫), eat its mangoes, and think about them. They planted it for those who come after.”
Vikram fell silent. “That sandalwood,” Mohan Kaka continued, “I may never see it grown. But maybe your children will. That’s enough.”
From that day, Vikram spent mornings learning patience from the old man. Six months later, he planted his own sapling. His friends laughed, but Vikram smiled. Years passed. Vikram moved cities, then countries, but in every place he planted a tree — investing (投资) in things that took time.
When Mohan Kaka passed away at eighty-two, Vikram returned. The sandalwood tree was five feet tall. It was still growing, slowly and silently. Vikram knelt beside it, thankful for a lesson he would carry for a lifetime.

Monkeys share tips on finding food
Researchers have discovered that spider monkeys share information with one another about the best places to find food. The fruit-eating monkeys live in large social groups of up to 100 animals but usually search for food in subgroups (子群体). After a trip into the forest, each monkey often moves from one subgroup to another to exchange their information. This helps all of them have a better chance of getting a good meal.
Scientists studied the behavior of endangered spider monkeys in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula for seven years. They followed a species (物种) called Geoffroy’s spider monkeys, recording where each monkey went and when they met up with other monkeys. The team then created a map based on the animals’ knowledge of the forest and figured out where there were unknown areas, such as a fruit tree that some of the monkeys had never visited.
The researchers also analyzed (分析) the monkeys’ subgroups and said these groups were formed for a purpose, and not for “random social interactions (随机社交互动).”
Members of the subgroups were not decided by their age or how recently they moved into the area. The research team concluded that the monkeys kept changing their subgroups. This way, monkeys that knew different parts of the forest could share information about where to find fruit.
“Some parts of the forest are known by lots of monkeys, like a town’s most popular restaurant, while others are only known by one or two monkeys, like a hidden gem (宝藏),” said researcher Matthew Sill. “It’s a clever system (体系) for sharing secret information about where the best fruit trees are.”
Experts said the best thing is that the monkeys explore different parts of the forest and then get together again to share what they have learned. For example, one monkey may know where the best fruit is, and another could tell when it is ready to eat. “This helps the whole group find more of the best places to get food,” Sill added. The team hopes to use the same research method to study other animals that hang out in changing groups.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The living habits of spider monkeys.
B. How the scientists did their research.
C. The dangers spider monkeys are facing.
13. What helps spider monkeys find more food
A. Living in large groups all the time.
B. Staying in the same subgroup for years.
C. Sharing information after exploring the forest.
14. What do we know about the subgroups of spider monkeys
A. They are decided by the monkeys’ age.
B. They are formed for a special purpose.
C. They stay the same without any changes.
15. What will the research team most probably do next
A. To study other animals that live in changing groups.
B. To build more hidden gems for spider monkeys in the forest.
C. To help spider monkeys find more best places to get food.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑,选项中有一项为多余选项。
Start a new hobby
Analog (实体) hobbies can improve your problem-solving skills and help you feel more creative. 16
Consider the possibilities. 17 They can be fiber (纤维) arts, including knitting, quilting (绗缝) and needlepoint (刺绣). If you enjoy music, you could explore vinyl records (黑胶唱片) or CDs to get a more real and touchable listening experience. There are also many outdoor hobbies, like bicycling, birdwatching, and nature photography.
Turn to helpful resources. First, you can ask your family if they can help you explore a new activity. You can ask who in your family can teach you special skills, like cooking, gardening or model building. 18 Those might include a film camera to take photos, or binoculars (双筒望远镜) to see birds up close. With an adult’s help, you can also look for free classes or clubs at your school or community center.
19 Rather than setting an end goal, you can enjoy a hobby in small steps. For example, if you are learning woodworking, you might start with building a simple birdhouse before building up to larger projects. As you gain experience and confidence, you can work up to bigger goals if you like.
Make it easy to practice. It’s easier to make time for a hobby if you have a special place for it, such as a corner with your supplies nearby. Another good idea is to bring analog hobbies with you when you’re on the go. 20
A. Begin small.
B. Here is how you can get started.
C. There are many kinds of analog hobbies.
D. This way, you can enjoy your hobby anywhere.
E. They may also have tools to help you get started.
F. It gives you a chance to share your hobby with others.

New research suggests that some smart dogs can learn new words in a similar way to young children.
A study in the journal Science shows that 18-month-old kids learn the names of things by listening to adults’ conversations. They do this by watching the speakers’ eye movements, catching communication signals (信号) and getting key words from what people say.
Researchers from a university in Hungary wanted to find out if “gifted” dogs — those that can learn toy names — could pick up new words just by listening. In the first test, 10 gifted dogs learned two new toy names in only eight minutes. Their owners taught them directly, and seven of them could successfully find and bring the toys when asked.
Then came the “overheard” test (旁听测试). Owners talked about new toys while passing them to each other, but they didn’t look at or talk to their dogs. The dogs were kept behind safety gates or in cages (笼子), so they couldn’t touch the toys. Surprisingly, seven out of 10 dogs still recognized the toys correctly. And six of them were among the same dogs that performed well in the first experiment.
The researchers pointed out that this ability is rare (罕见的). It only belongs to “Gifted Word Learner” dogs, like Border Collies. Ordinary dogs can’t do this. The findings suggest that dogs’ human-like learning skills developed before language, so living with humans has helped dogs ____________________.
