说明文 名人名言 ★★★ 7 min P45
“The mountains are calling and I must go”—the famous quote is from John Muir (1838—1914),who is described as “the wilderness poet” and “the citizen of the universe”. He once jokingly referred to himself as a “poet-geologist-botanist and ornithologist (鸟类学家)-naturalist etc.etc.!” He is known as the Father of American National Parks.
Famed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns once said,“As we got to know him…he was among the highest individuals in America; I’m talking about the level of Abraham Lincoln,Martin Luther King Jr.,and Thomas Jefferson—people who have had a transformational effect on who we are.”
So where is the quote from Well,John Muir was a productive writer. Whether he was writing poetry or simply letters to his family,John Muir was always putting pen to paper. The quote is from within one of his many letters written to his sister:
3 September,1873
Yosemite Valley
Dear sister Sarah,
I have just returned from the longest and hardest trip I have ever made in the mountains, having been gone over five weeks. I am weary, but resting fast; sleepy, but sleeping deep and fast; hungry, but eating much. For two weeks I explored the glaciers of the summits east of here, sleeping among the snowy mountains without blankets and with little to eat on account of its being so inaccessible. After my icy experiences,it seems strange to be down here in so warm and flowery a climate.
I will soon be off again, determined to use all the season in carrying through my work—will go next to Kings River a hundred miles south, then to Lake Tahoe and surrounding mountains, and in winter work in Oakland with my pen.
Though slow, someday I will have the results of my mountain studies in a form in which you all will be able to read and judge them. The mountains are calling and I must go,and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly (永不停息地).
I will write again when I return from Kings River Canyon.
Farewell,with love everlasting.
Yours,
John

新闻报道 追求橄榄球梦想 ★★★ 8 min P45
Isaac Woodhouse,an Australian teen, could achieve an NFL (美国国家橄榄球联盟) achievement never defeated by anyone outside the US or Canada. Melbourne’s Isaac Woodhouse has grabbed the attention of talent scouts (星探) who believe the 19-year-old has what it takes to become the first Australian to become a quarterback (四分卫) in the NFL. Despite playing just 10 matches, the former Xavier College student on Friday flew to the US hoping to follow in the footsteps of American football greats such as seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
Isaac Woodhouse never played quarterback for a division Ⅰ US school, let alone the NFL,but colleges known for American football are said to be interested in the 1.98m tall,105kg heavy teen.
“It’s a bit unique—I’m hoping to be the first quarterback to ever do it from Australia,” Woodhouse said. “Obviously there have been some Australian athletes who have gone over there and done pretty well, and they have had some success. But I’m hoping to clear the way for some quarterbacks and other skill positions.”
Woodhouse told the Herald Sun he resolved to make history,as top US colleges are competing for his services. Woodhouse said that it had all happened really quickly but all he could do was learn along the way,try his best and see how it went.
His coach Glenn Parke,a quarterback for Victoria for 22 years, said,“US scouts have been taking notice as Woodhouse chased his NFL dream. Not only would he be the first Australian, but he would be the only non-North American to ever do it. So this is the rare air, extremely rare and exceptional kind of stuff that could happen if things go well for him.”

说明文 电影观众与电影爱好者的区别 ★★★ 8 min P45
Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover I’d say so. You can love a movie by watching it at home. 12 . I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about movies. By listening to what they say,I can report they only share one thing in common: they go out.
I’ve thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don’t go to the movies for a distinct purpose. 13 . They are bored. Once they get inside, they can’t help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theatre, these moviegoers don’t want to talk to anyone about the movie. 14 . Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective (自省的). I think some of us use movie theatres to retreat inside ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theatre manager,Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something,or escape from the lives they are leading. Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago. 15 ,they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless. 16 ,but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.
