7 min P39
The Grammys celebrate the best in music, but behind every songwriter, performer, and producer that makes it to that stage are music teachers and educators who inspired their craft and showed them the ropes, sometimes from a very young age. That’s why the Grammy Awards also hand out a Music Educator Award, which recognises those who have made a significant contribution and demonstrated a commitment to music education.
In 2025,the award went to Annie Ray,the performing arts department chair and orchestra director at Annandale High School in Fairfax County,Virginia—a community with many immigrants. With the creation of the Crescendo Orchestra, she works to make music accessible to all students, particularly those with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities. Additionally, she created a parent orchestra,in which 200 caregivers learn to play the same instrument as their child every year.
Ray took home both a $10,000 prize and a matching grant for her school’s music programme. In an interview following the merit award ceremony,Ray credited her pupils with this recognition. “This is the students’ award,” she said. “I’m just lucky enough to have been a part of their journey and their process and to have been taught by them.”
Now,Ray will use the prize money to buy instruments—something the school had struggled to do. She also plans to create an ongoing scholarship for students who want to become musicians and music educators when they graduate.
For Ray,the moment appears to be full circle, since it was a music teacher who first changed her life at age five, when she learnt to play the harp (竖琴). “The reason why I am where I am is that a teacher changed my life and made me want to be a music educator,” she said.

7 min P39
There’s no tune,no lyrics, and you can’t dance to it. Don’t let that put you off: white noise is the music industry’s next big thing. Streaming services have seen an explosion of tracks in the last year consisting entirely of recordings of rainfall, ocean waves and winds.
Some of the recordings have earned their creators millions of pounds. Record companies and tech firms have taken notice. Some are including background noise in their next operating systems, and others have been promoting pink noise and brown noise—sounds with lower frequencies—as an aid to concentration for students at the start of the school year.
Noise fans say that studying, sleeping and meditation (冥想) are all enhanced by listening to these sounds at proper levels. The economics of music-streaming mean noise-makers can cash in. Someone falling asleep to White Noise Baby Sleep’s 90-second track Clean White Noise on repeat for seven hours will win up 280 plays. By 2022,it had been played 837 million times, worth an estimated $2.5 million in royalties (版税). The lead track on Rain Sounds playlist, two minutes of rainfall, has more than 100 million plays.
In contrast,Laura Mvula only has 541,000 streams for the title track of this year’s award-winning album,Pink Noise—not a slice of sleepiness but tuneful, lyrical dance-pop that took her three years to make. Most streaming services pay royalties in roughly the same way. They set aside a total pot for royalties, which is then divided up between distributors, record labels, recording artists and songwriters. That means that Mvula will get a smaller slice of the pie than will White Noise Baby Sleep, although most of it goes to the major record companies.
It’s hard to work out who is making such noise. White Noise Baby Sleep’s songwriting credits are listed as belonging to an Erik Eriksson. It’s not obvious who Eriksson is or whether he is part of a larger organisation, but the Medium website One Zero last year established that many of the artists’ names are pseudonyms (化名) used by companies.
( )5.Which of the following best describes white noise

D
( )6.How does the author describe the popularity of white noise in Paragraph 3
A.By presenting some statistics. B.By making classifications.
C.By making a comparison. D.By giving a definition.
根据第三段中的“By 2022,it had been played 837 million times,worth…has more than 100 million plays.”
A
( )7.What does the author want to show by mentioning Laura Mvula’s Pink Noise
A.White noise is more popular. B.Pink noise has gone out of date.
C.How Mvula gets paid. D.Who makes huge profits.
根据第四段中的“In contrast,Laura Mvula only has 541,000 streams…that took her three years to make.”
A
( )8.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Tips for attracting more white noise fans.
B.Challenges some companies are faced with.
C.Difficulty in identifying the copyright holders.
D.Ways to improve the qualities of credits.

8 min P40
A recent survey in the US found that Gen Z-ers and Millennials (千禧一代) visit libraries more often than their parents or grandparents do. The young love libraries because they are secure, comfortable, free and—as my 11-year-old would say—“aesthetic”. This means they look good in the background of an online post or video. It’s also a great place to meet people. If you’re both young and in a library, chances are you have similar interests.
And then, too, there are the books. Gen Z-ers are turning out to be big readers, especially of paper books. Even though,or perhaps because, they have in their pockets the most limitlessly distracting devices ever invented, many are deliberately choosing to pick up a piece of 15th-century technology instead. They like the fact that books are self-contained and require concentration.
There is,sometimes,a sense of nostalgic (怀旧的) cosplay in the way young people read. In New York, for example, the latest short video-fuelled craze is reading with strangers in bars. You have to buy a ticket in advance, and then you all gather and sit in silence for 30 minutes, reading whatever book you’ve brought along. Like an expensive version of going to the library, except that afterwards you all have a drink and talk about books.
The very thought of it makes me suffer, but that’s because I’m a child of the 1970s and 80s. To me,reading is a private pleasure, while screens—TV or cinema—are social. I did once,in a fit of ambitious parenting, introduce a “family reading hour”,during which my husband and children were pressed to join me at the fireside for some silent reading. It could not have felt more performative if we had dressed up in top hats and crinolines But still,I applaud these young readers—for knowing what is good for them, for seeking out human connection, for finding the beauty and pleasure in old institutions, and for bringing new life to the library.

C.They consider e-reading a way to discover beauty.
D.They expect to meet people with different interests.

8 min P40
Getting older means greater maturity and wisdom. 13 In a society that is aging fast,it has become crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders. Music emerges as a promising tool for promoting well-being of the elderly.
Music has a great power to cause strong emotions and intense pleasure. 14 Singing and dancing to music with others not only is fun but also improves mood. Musical activities are great ways to reduce stress because they take our minds off problems. They also help us feel less lonely and more connected with other people.
15 A song may become a soundtrack for a particular time, such as a delightful party with friends that you had a long time ago. Listening to that song allows you to remember all the happy memories from that time.
Finally, music contributes to keeping our thinking skills sharp. It makes our brains work hard in unique ways to understand the rhythm and melody. 16 For example, exposure to background music, particularly classical music, during cognitive (认知的) tasks is shown to improve older people’s cognitive processes, such as processing speed and working memory.
In conclusion, music is a powerful tool to fight against aging-related emotional and cognitive problems. It is an enjoyable and social activity, available to anyone regardless of their background or previous musical experience. 17
