Dear fellow students,
Today,we are here to make an appeal to everyone with the intention of raising our awareness of wildlife protection. As we know, many wild animals are facing the danger of extinction, dying out at an alarming rate. That is because their habitats are being threatened by human activities. For example, the development of cities, the use of insecticides, and the spread of pollution has made their living areas increasingly smaller. Many of the wild animals now are confronted with food crisis. Besides,we humans are killing off species just for their fur, skin, horns, teeth and meat.
Wildlife plays an important role in keeping the balance of nature, and the loss of any species will eventually affect and harm us humans. Therefore, immediate measures should be taken, such as prohibiting the killing of rare species and establishing more nature reserves.
Only by taking immediate measures can we ensure the preservation of wild animals. It is our collective responsibility to act now.

“I am not crazy,” says Dr William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit. “I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive,it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “holistic” medicine—combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber,a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture,an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So,after studying the techniques for a couple of years,he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack,Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse,Nappy,“moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication,he may be right: Since 1982,membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”

【解析】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Then he tried acupuncture,an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved…So,after studying the techniques for a couple of years,he began offering them to pets.”可知,Farber作为患者从针灸中受益,这促使他决定尝试为宠物提供针灸治疗。
C
( )3.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about

D
( )4.Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
A.To prove Farber’s point. B.To emphasise its importance.
C.To praise veterinarians. D.To advocate animal protection.

7 min P37
For years, illegal hunters hunted lions without mercy along the border between Chad and Cameroon in north-central Africa. They killed so many of the animals that wildlife conservationists consider lions to be extinct in the region. But over the last decade, the governments of both nations have been working together to protect the area’s vast grassland and the many animals living there.
Now,their efforts seem to be paying off. For the first time in 20 years,a lion has been spotted inside Chad’s Sena Oura National Park, located near the border with Cameroon. In February,a remote camera shot a photograph of a beautiful grown-up female lion that was clearly in great health, the non-profit Wildlife Conservation Society and the government of Chad revealed in a joint statement last week. In the image, which appears to have been taken at night, the big cat lay comfortably on the ground with her left paw (爪子) extended and her right paw bent towards her body.
They suspect this female crossed the border into Chad from Bouba Ndjida National Park in Cameroon, where overall lion numbers are on the rise. The two parks are near to one another,so it makes sense that lions would be returning to parts of their former range, including Sena Oura, according to the statement.
Though this female is the only lion in the photograph, she’s likely not alone. “This is hugely encouraging, because grown-up females are the foundation of any lion population, and they are not big wanderers. They inhabit areas that have prey (猎物) and are safe to raise their babies in,” says director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s big cat programme,to BBC News.
The new photo has given wildlife officials a renewed sense of optimism about the future of lions in West and Central Africa, where their numbers have dropped by roughly 66 percent since the early 1990s. Lions that inhabit this region are genetically different from other groups,so their reappearance is especially valuable, according to the statement.

“The players’ personalities 28 (reveal) during the game, and one’s weaknesses are exposed to the opponent,” she adds. “A decent winner always 29 (try) to beat the opponent 30 no more than one or two points as a gesture (姿态) of respect for the other side.”
Tu says that the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the 31 (strategy) placement of the pieces, 32 the energy flow following each move inspired artists to create oil paintings, sculptures, 33 (digital) generated pictures and silk-screen prints for the exhibition.
