Have you ever come across such a situation At the dinner table, your parents keep telling you to eat more vegetables, but you really want to refuse. Why do many young people dislike eating vegetables even though they have many benefits
Scientists say young people’s taste buds (味蕾) are not ready for the bitter (苦的) taste of some vegetables because their taste buds aren’t fully mature yet. As they grow older, the taste buds also develop, and they might start to enjoy foods like cabbage. Until that happens, most young people prefer sweet taste instead.
This preference for sweetness is actually normal — the prehistoric people felt the same way. They ate plenty of sweet fruit because it was easy to find and rich in energy. They also learned to be careful with bitter plants, which were often dangerous to eat.
Still, tasting is not just the tongue’s (舌头的) job. The smell of vegetables tells the brains what is eaten. For example, although the onion tastes sweet, some young people still avoid it because of its strong smell. The only way for them to accept onions is to hold their noses while eating. The feel of food also sends messages to their brains. That’s why they dislike certain foods, like thick or creamy ones, no matter how good these foods taste.
So, if you don’t like those vegetables on your plate, you can say there is science behind it. But your parents might tell you to hold your nose before serving you a big plate of vegetables!

I used to think community workers were just elderly people organizing morning exercises in the park. But my opinion changed completely after a 6-week volunteer work in my neighborhood.
Together with my three other classmates, we began the programme at the start of the summer vacation. At first, we weren’t very confident. We thought community work would be boring and the community office was an elderly care home. But we were wrong. The community office was just like a big company. It had a well-organized computer system and many community workers. And our work was in fact meaningful. For example, we helped elderly neighbors learn how to use smartphones to video call their children. We cleaned up the community garden and planted flowers for everyone to enjoy.
The biggest challenge came when we took some children to a museum. We had to look after them while also introducing the objects in the museum. It was stressful because some children behaved badly. However, we made it through together. Our organization and communication skills have improved from this experience. I have a new look at different jobs. I found that no matter what we do in the future, being professional (专业的) and responsible is the key to success. Now, I feel more confident and excited about my future.
