Art in the Moment
When I was fifteen, my watercolor painting was refused by an art competition. I stared(凝视)at the judges' note:"The work doesn't show emotional(情感的)depth, "and my heart broke. I had spent weeks drawing every leaf and stone (13) . Though my fingers hurt, I kept going without resting. For several days, I stayed alone in my room, thinking about giving up painting completely. My art teacher, Ms. Wilson, (14) my silence. She sat beside me and said gently, "Your skill is good, but where are your feelings in the picture "Her words stayed in my mind. While riding my bike home through the forest I had painted, I suddenly realized what she meant. I had been so busy copying nature that I forgot my own (15) with it. That summer, I volunteered at a nature park. Instead of drawing quickly, I learned to sit quietly under the trees, watching sunlight move across the grass. Slowly, my love for painting (16) . My sketchbook soon filled with simple but lovely (17) —morning light on the hills, small animals moving softly, and birds landing lightly on the rocks. When the art competition came again the next year, I painted outdoors rather than using old photos. This time, I left some parts (18) so that viewers could use their imagination. After handing in my work, I felt a sense of calm. A week later, the judges wrote, "We feel the life of the forest. "I won a prize and even received an invitation to teach painting at a small summer camp in the countryside. Now, as a young art teacher, when I teach these kids, I always share what Ms. Wilson taught me. Last Thursday, a girl looked upset and said, "My sunflowers look too dark. "Instead of letting her add more (19) , I handed her some seeds(种子). "Watch how they grow first. "I told her. A few weeks later, her new painting looked more natural and full of life. When we hung it near the window, a butterfly passed by slowly, as if giving us the same message:true art comes from careful watching, not from simple (20) . Slow down, keep creating with heart, and your work will shine brightly.

Tom sat at his desk, staring at his homework. He was a bit down. Earlier that evening, he had argued with his dad about using AI to finish his work. "You have used it too much," his dad had said. "It's useful, but if you use it for everything, you won't learn to think for yourself." Tom knew his dad was right.
That night, Tom came to the bedroom, his heart beating fast. He took a deep breath and entered. "Dad, can we talk?" he asked. His dad smiled and nodded. Tom said, "I was wrong to use AI for all my homework. I want to try doing it by myself from now on." His dad was glad and gave him some advice:start with small tasks, check facts with AI, but try to write down your own ideas.
The next morning, Tom opened his notebook. He tried to finish his English writing on his own. At first, it was slow, and he made many mistakes. He got confused by some difficult questions and almost gave up. But then he thought of his dad's words:"Try your best and take your time." Slowly, he began writing, checking each sentence carefully. By lunchtime, Tom finished his writing and felt more confident.
As the week went on, Tom tried to use what he learned in different subjects. He used AI only to check facts. He still made mistakes and had to rewrite part of his report. At first, he felt upset, but then he realized that correcting his own mistakes helped him understand the topic better. His dad noticed and said, "You are improving.Believe in yourself."
Finally, Friday came. Tom handed in his history report, written completely by himself. When he got it back, he could hardly believe it—he got an A!His teacher even praised his careful thinking and creative ideas.
Tom learned an important lesson:learning is not about taking the easy way. It is about working hard, thinking carefully, and facing problems bravely.

In many ways, our memories define (定义) our sense of self. You first have a sense of yourself early in life, perhaps as young as 18 months, when you recognize that the little baby you see in the mirror is really you, and not another child. As you progress through childhood and into teenage years, you start to develop a set of views about your identity (身份), including how your body looks and performs, your abilities, your personality and your place in society.
While we are growing up, we start to create our own descriptions about the events we have gone through, or what I call the “life story”. Our identities are shaped by our life stories, as the memories of these stories gradually become a part of our sense of self. Of all these memories, the most important are “self-defining memories”. They are remembered most clearly and can help to build up our overall sense of self most greatly.
Learning to recognize your own self-defining memories can help you gain important insights about your identity. The easiest way to discover your own self-defining memories is by thinking about the events in your life that you are most likely to tell other people about when they say “tell me a little about yourself”.
However, self-defining memories are always changing as you experience more events. They may vary according to your age and what you care about in present life.
In a study, scientists compared older adults with college students. They found that older adults were more likely to feel more positively (正面地) about their self-defining memories, even if the memories were of events that were negative in nature. A similar study also suggests that older adults have found ways to make sense out of their life stories. They turn memories of troubling events into positive stories, and in this way, they make peace with their past struggles (挣扎). For younger adults, troubling events cause them to experience more pain when they recall them. As scientists have discovered, a self-defining memory does not have to be positive in order for you to grow from it. It’s not the event, but the meaning you make out of the event, that affects (影响) your sense of well-being.
Discovering your self-defining memories is an important step in dealing with your life experiences. By recognizing and making sense out of past events, your identity can continue to grow and improve how you see yourself, both now, and in the future.
24.What can we learn from the passage
A. Our self-defining memories have little to do with age.
B. Our own descriptions of life experiences shape our identity.
C. We should share positive life stories when introducing ourselves.
D. We start to have self-defining memories when we are 18 months old.
25.From the studies mentioned in Paragraph 5, we know ________.
A. important events can be changed by time
B. older adults have few troubling life events
C. making sense out of memories helps us to grow
D. self-discovery happens during positive experiences
26.Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Self-defining memories: How others get to know you

Almost everyone has experienced the uncomfortable feeling of being misunderstood. A girl, for example, sends a short message to her friend because she is busy, but the friend thinks she is angry. Or a mother asks her son to study harder out of care, yet the son believes she doesn’t trust him. A teacher may simply ask a student to hand in homework, but the student thinks that the teacher dislikes him.
Misunderstandings like these can cause serious results. They may hurt friendships, create arguments in families, or make people not believe each other. When someone feels people are wrong about them, they may become sad, angry, or even stop expressing their true thoughts. In class, a student who is often misunderstood may stop asking questions or taking part in group work. What makes things worse is that misunderstandings often grow quietly, and people may not realize the problem until it becomes difficult to fix.
One reason for misunderstandings is that people see the same situation differently. Our past experiences, feelings and worries all change how we hear words. Another reason is that we often make quick guesses without checking the facts. We think we already know what the other person means, so we stop listening. Sometimes, people keep their feelings inside because they are afraid of being laughed at. As a result, small problems turn into bigger ones. Facing these facts can be uncomfortable, but it is important if we want to build stronger relationships.
Recognizing misunderstandings is the first step to change. When we slow down, listen carefully, and ask questions, we can better understand what others truly mean. Simple sentences like “Did you mean…” or “I feel this way when you say that” can open the door to real communication. Research shows that empathy can help stop many misunderstandings. This feeling for others helps us notice when people are sad or worried and makes us try to understand their feelings. These ways of listening, asking and caring help us think before reacting and give others a chance to explain themselves.
The key to solving misunderstandings lies in kindness to ourselves and others. Everyone makes mistakes in communication. By creating an environment where people feel safe to speak, we can break down walls. When we understand that misunderstandings are a common part of life, it becomes easier to talk openly, fix relationships, and grow together.
27.Why does the writer use the examples in Paragraph 1
A. To stress that misunderstandings can cause problems.
B. To answer why people send short messages to others.
C. To compare different ways to communicate with others.
D. To show that misunderstandings often happen in daily life.

A. A way to start conversations.

A. Staying quiet is the way to stop arguments.
B. Guessing quickly helps solve misunderstandings.
C. Open communication helps stop many misunderstandings.
D. Misunderstandings happen because people lie to each other.
30.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage
A. To stop people to make communication mistakes.
B. To advise readers how to express themselves clearly.
C. To explain why misunderstandings are often difficult to fix.
