In celebration of Earth Month 2026, we present four new or notable books that explore different dimensions of environmental action: pollution, protest, and protection. Each title offers a unique lens on how we understand and respond to the planet’s challenges.
Inescapable: Facing Up to Forever Chemicals by F. Marina Schauffler (Johns Hopkins University Press 2026, 272 pages, $32.95)
PFAS are chemicals that are hard to destroy. They have entered the blood of almost every American and can stay in the environment for a long time. This book shows how ordinary people are dealing with the harmful effects of these industrial chemicals, offering a plan for solving what the author calls “this chemical monster.
The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late by Judith Enck (The New Press 2025, 240 pages, $27.99)
Plastic is everywhere—wrapped around our food, used in our clothes, even flowing through our bodies. This book carefully studies the problem of plastic, showing how plastic pollution harms oceans, pollutes air, warms the planet, and greatly affects poor communities.
The Genius of Earth Day: How a 1970 Teach-In Unexpectedly Made the First Green Generation by Adam Rome (Hill & Wang 2013/2014, 368 pages, $25.99 paperback)
The first Earth Day is the most famous little-known event in modern American history. This prizewinning historian offers an interesting account of why that day was so powerful, bringing to life one of the greatest political events of the twentieth century and explaining how it made the environmental movement a major force.
The Company of Owls: A Memoir by Polly Atkin (Milkweed Editions 2026, 216 pages, $25.00)
“Let me tell you about my neighbors, the owls,” writes Polly Atkin. Limited by a chronic illness to her cottage, she turns to the trees and animals for companionship—especially the owl siblings. As she watches them grow, she reflects on survival, solitude, community, and finding joy in unexpected places.
21. Which book would you recommend to someone interested in tackling the long-term effects of industrial chemicals

B
When we’re stressed out, many of us turn to junk food for comfort. But new research from CU Boulder suggests this strategy might backfire .
The study found that in animals, a high-fat diet can disrupt gut bacteria, change behavior, and through a complex link between the gut and the brain, affect brain chemicals and cause anxiety.
“Everyone knows junk food isn't healthy, but we usually only think about weight gain,” said Christopher Lowry, a professor at CU Boulder. “If you know it can also affect your brain and cause anxiety, the problem becomes more serious.”
In a previous study, rats on a high-fat diet mainly made up of saturated fat showed more brain inflammation and anxiety-like behavior. Some human studies also show that replacing a high-fat, high-sugar, processed diet with a healthier one can reduce depression and anxiety.
To find out the link between fat and anxiety, Lowry's team divided male adolescent rats into two groups. One group had a standard diet with about 11% fat for nine weeks, and the other had a 45% high-fat diet mainly from animal saturated fat. During the study, the researchers collected fecal samples and checked the animals' gut bacteria. After nine weeks, the animals took behavioral tests.
Compared with the control group, the high-fat diet group gained weight and had less diverse gut bacteria. They also showed higher activity of three genes related to the production and signaling of serotonin, especially in a part of the brainstem related to stress and anxiety.
Although serotonin is often considered a “feel-good chemical,” Lowry said that some serotonin neurons can cause anxiety-like responses in animals when activated. High activity of a certain enzyme related to brain chemicals in this part of the brain has been linked to mood disorders and suicide risk in humans.
Lowry stressed that not all fats are bad. Healthy fats in fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds can be good for the brain. But his research on animals shows that a high-fat diet, especially in youth, can cause short-term anxiety and make the brain more likely to be anxious in the future.
24. What does the underlined word "backfire" in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Work as expected. B. Have an opposite effect.
C. Lead to a quick success. D. Provide immediate relief.
25. Why did Lowry's team divide the rats into two groups
A. To see how rats gain weight. B. To study the relationship between fat and anxiety.
C. To test different types of diets on rats. D. To check the activity of genes in rats.
26. What happened to the high-fat diet group of rats
A. They showed no signs of weight gain or behavioral changes.
B. Their gut bacteria became less varied, and they showed signs of anxiety.
C. They preferred the standard diet over the high-fat one after the experiment.
D. The activity of their brain chemicals decreased significantly.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Science Behind Your Junk Food Cravings
B. Not All Fats Are Created Equal for Your Brain
C. How a high-fat diet could make you anxious
D. A New Study Reveals the Risks of Teenage Obesity
C
New research suggests a link between the height of exam-hall ceilings and student performance. The idea may appear unusual at first, but it gains credibility the more you reflect on how our surroundings shape concentration and mental efficiency.
While a room's shape cannot compensate for a lack of revision, environments do influence our ability to focus. Isabella Bower, an environmental psychologist, and her team examined the exam scores of 15,400 students over eight years, comparing them with results predicted by earlier coursework. They found that students in rooms with elevated ceilings tended to underperform relative to those in standard-height rooms, even when factors such as age, gender, and subject were controlled.
"These spaces are often designed as gymnasiums or exhibition halls, not for examinations," Bower noted. "Large, high-ceilinged rooms appear to disadvantage students." However, she stressed that it remains unclear whether the room's dimensions are the direct cause, or whether variables like temperature, humidity, or student density play the major role.
A previous study using brain mapping and virtual reality had already indicated a relationship between cognitive ability and the perceived size of one's surroundings. The current real-world data seems to support this, suggesting that the brain mechanisms involved in processing large spaces might conflict with the intense focus required for exams.
Educational psychologist Jaclyn Broadbent adds that since examinations shape students' career paths, recognizing the impact of the physical environment is crucial. "We might not be giving students the best chance for success by holding exams in rooms that aren't custom-built for the purpose," she says. Making necessary adjustments could ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.
28.What did the researchers do to conduct the real-world testing
A. They monitored students' brain activity during actual exams.
B. They adjusted the ceiling height of gymnasiums to observe students' reactions.
C. They interviewed 15,400 students to collect their feedback on exam environments.
D. They checked whether exam results matched the scores predicted by previous coursework.
29.What can we learn about the study conducted by Bower's team
A. It aimed to prove that revision is less important than environment.
B. It ignored the role of other environmental factors like temperature.
C. It attempted to rule out certain personal factors to ensure accuracy.
D. It confirmed that room dimensions are the sole cause of underperformance.
30.What can be inferred from the study results
A. High ceilings are the only factor leading to students' underperformance.
B. The brain's response to large spaces may interfere with concentration.
C. Students in gymnasiums are guaranteed to receive lower grades.
D. Physical environments have a greater impact than students' revision.
31.What is Jaclyn Broadbent's attitude towards the current exam environments
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Ambiguous.
D
Do mosquitoes prefer a certain blood type Maybe—but it’s not just one factor that influences why these winged pests are attracted to us and researchers can’t seem to agree on a definitive answer.
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who return from time in the outdoors covered in itchy mosquito bites and those who can spend hours in the same space and avoid getting bitten at all. Let's face it, mosquitoes are not equal opportunity feasters .
So, what exactly makes some people more attractive to mosquitoes than others
Science reveals that a variety of factors might make you more palatable to mosquitoes, from your skin microbiota and carbon dioxide emitted in your breath to the color of clothing you're wearing (with colors like red, orange, and black being the most attractive to mosquitoes). But in the end, much of the variation in mosquito preference comes down to two factors: our natural body odor and genetics.
Only the females bite humans and they do it to get a “blood meal,” deriving proteins from our blood to produce their eggs. To help locate their prey, female mosquitoes use their antennae and palps, the organs between their antennae, to detect carbon dioxide and odor. That means people who have a high metabolic rate and emit more carbon dioxide, including those who are pregnant, working out, or drinking alcohol tend to be more attractive to mosquitoes.
The question of whether mosquitos prefer a certain blood type is controversial. One theory suggests that blood type may also help determine mosquito preference. If that’s the case, what blood type do mosquitos like A 2019 study found that the major mosquito vector of dengue virus preferred people with type O blood to those with other blood types.
However, separate research notes that experimental and laboratory data evaluating whether blood type makes one person more (or less) attractive to mosquitoes has fueled a lot of speculation, but the science is contradictory. Instead, the researchers report that the likelihood of being a “mosquito magnet” has more to do with skin odors and microbiota than blood type.
32.What does the author mean by “mosquitoes are not equal opportunity feasters” in paragraph 2
A. Mosquitoes feed on different types of food sources.
B. Some people are much more likely to be bitten than others.
C. Mosquitoes prefer to feast during specific times of the day.
D. Every person has an equal chance of being bitten by mosquitoes.
33.According to the passage, which factor is ultimately considered the most significant in determining mosquito preference
A. Blood type and clothing color. B. Carbon dioxide emission and alcohol drinking.
C. Body odor and genetic makeup. D. Skin microbiota and pregnancy.
34.What can be inferred from the 2019 study and the separate research mentioned in the last two paragraphs
A. The 2019 study conclusively proved that type O blood is the most attractive.
B. Blood type is the decisive factor that overrides all other influences.
C. Scientific findings on the role of blood type in mosquito attraction are not consistent.
D. Researchers have reached a general agreement that blood type matters little.
35.What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To argue that genetics is the only factor that makes a person a mosquito magnet.
B. To explain why certain people are more attractive to mosquitoes than others.
C. To describe the detailed biological process of how mosquitoes locate their prey.
D. To recommend effective ways to prevent mosquito bites based on blood type.

It was a busy Friday afternoon at the supermarket. After a long week, I was tired and all I wanted was to get home with my groceries. I carefully chose just the basics: bread, milk, eggs, some apples, and a few cans of soup. Money was tight, so as I pushed my cart to the checkout, I kept adding up the total in my head, praying it wouldn’t be more than the cash in my purse. Then the clerk finished scanning. The number on the screen read $67.My heart sank. I opened my wallet and counted —only $55.I was $12 short. My face burned with embarrassment. The line behind me was growing longer, and I could almost feel the other shoppers’ eyes on my back. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, fumbling to open one of the bags. I reached in to take out the bread and apples, trying to decide what to leave behind. A lump formed in my throat. I was holding up the line, and I could feel the impatience around me.
Just then, the man behind me stepped forward. He had a tired but gentle face, and in his hand he held a single flower that looked a little dry at the edges. Without a word, he held out a $20 bill toward me. “Oh, no, please don’t put yourself out,” I protested, shaking my head.
He smiled softly. “Let me tell you a story,” he said. “My mother is in the hospital with cancer. I visit her every day and bring her fresh flowers. This morning, she got angry at me. ‘Stop spending your money on flowers for me,’ she said. ‘These blooms just fade away beside my bed. I want you to use that money to do something else — something that can bloom in someone else’s life.’” He paused and looked at the flower in his hand, his eyes growing wet. “I was walking here, not knowing what to do with that money, and then I saw you. So here, please accept this. It is my mother’s flowers.” I looked at the $20 bill, and my throat tightened. My hand trembled slightly. How could I take money from a stranger whose mother was dying But the look in his eyes told me that refusing would break something beautiful. “Thank you,” I whispered, and took the bill. It felt warm in my hand, like a living thing.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
A wave of warmth washed over me as I took the $20 bill. “Please,” I said, my voice unsteady, “just tell me her name.” He smiled, quickly writing the hospital and room number on an old receipt. After he left, I finished paying, but the note in my hand felt heavier than any money. I knew I had to thank him in a way that truly mattered. That evening, I bought the freshest bouquet I could find and made up my mind to visit his mother the next day.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning, I walked into the hospital room with a bouquet of flowers. The man sat by the bed, his eyes wide with surprise. I handed the flowers to his mother and said softly, “Your son turned your wish into a gift for a stranger. Now I want you to have these — a thank-you from someone whose day you changed.” The elderly woman held the bouquet, and tears filled her eyes. “So he really did use that money for someone else,” she whispered. “Now I can see my flowers have bloomed in the most beautiful way.” In that small room, the three of us shared a quiet moment, strangers no more.I thought long and hard about what she said.
