What to Do During a Thunderstorm
Thunderstorms are common in summer. They usually come with lightning, heavy rain and strong winds. Lightning is very dangerous and can cause fires or hurt people. So it’s important to know what to do during a thunderstorm to keep safe.
First, if you are indoors, stay away from windows and doors. Do not use electrical appliances like TVs, computers or phones, because lightning may hit the power lines and cause electric shocks. You can read a book or listen to the radio instead.
Second, if you are outdoors when a thunderstorm starts, find a safe place to take shelter. Do not stand under tall trees, because trees are easily hit by lightning. Do not stay in open areas like fields or playgrounds. You can go into a nearby building or a car with closed windows.
Third, if you are in water, like swimming in a pool or a river, get out of the water at once. Water is a good conductor of electricity, so you may get shocked by lightning.
