Dear Chris,
I’m glad to know that you are interested in Chinese calligraphy. I would like to recommend the character
“Yong” as a good starting point for beginners.
Structurally, this character is well-balanced and contains a variety of basic strokes, including dots, lines and
turns. Practising it can help learners master fundamental writing skills and develop a sense of structure.
More importantly, “Yong” means “eternity”, symbolizing continuity and lasting beauty. It reflects the
Chinese belief in harmony and balance, making the writing exercise a cultural experience.
I hope you will enjoy practising it.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
作答示例:
Later in the hands-on design class, Mrs Melville announced a seat rearrangement. I felt a knot in my
stomach when I was informed I would have to sit next to Colette. Then Mrs Melville assigned us a task to make a
paper lantern together. I lowered my head, pretending to be busy, hoping to avoid any conversation. Noticing this,
Colette smiled and suggested we share ideas. Though still a little annoyed, I picked up my tools and decided to
cooperate, if only to finish the task.
As we worked together for a paper lantern, I began to see Colette in a different light. She folded colored
paper and cut simple patterns, trying to make the lantern look better. When I struggled, she patiently showed me
how to fix it and decorated it with ribbons. Watching her, I couldn’t help wondering if I had judged her too quickly.
My heart softened. “Would you like to sit with me tomorrow ” I asked boldly. She accepted my invitation, a
bright smile on her face. Perhaps being the “Queen Bee” meant something different – not standing above others,
but bringing them in.

听力文本
Text 1
W: Why not spend our vacation in California We could visit Jenny. She can be our guide.
M: I don’t think so. She’s with her parents in London. Her father has been in the hospital recently.
Text 2
W: Look at that statue! It looks like a real man sitting in a park, playing chess with his friend.
M: Wow! How lifelike it is! The card says it is the most popular work on display.
Text 3
W: You’re swimming again I thought you preferred hiking.
M: Only because it’s raining. But give me a bike any day – mountain trails beat everything!
Text 4
W: Watson just took the day off today.
M: Wait – hasn’t he been absent three times this month
W: No, that was Wells – he’s had three dentist appointments. Watson rarely takes time off—except for
math competitions.
Text 5
M: Zoe, is that your umbrella on the chair It’s starting to rain heavily outside.
W: Yes, but you can use it. I have a raincoat in my bag.
M: Thanks! I was thinking about buying one, but this saves me.
W: No need. Just return it tomorrow.
Text 6
W: Grandpa, I thought gardening was easy. But last week, I didn’t dig the hole deep enough, and the
apple tree almost fell over!
M: Take your time, Nancy. Dig deeper and keep some dirt around the roots.
W: Yeah, I’ve figured out the trick. Yesterday I planted three trees, and Uncle said I did a neat job. I’m
tired but happy.
M: Great. Remember to water the flowers in the evening. They grow better when it’s cool.
W: Got it! This holiday, I learned gardening and really appreciated the work behind our food.
Text 7
M: I just ordered a bookshelf. It’ll take about two weeks to arrive by sea.
W: But we don’t have any space left for new stuff! The living room is now filled with samples from
Jerry’s company.
M: I know. That’s why I’ve put our old bookshelf on the resale market. The one we’ve had for over 30
years. It’s even older than Jerry! Honestly, it’s really time to get rid of it. And many people have
messaged me asking about it.
W: You really think you can sell it in two weeks
M: Of course! I’ve already got a buyer.
W: Then we’d better start taking the books off it right away.
M: Yes, let’s do it now!
Text 8
M: Hi, Lily. Are you ready to talk about your presentation on campus recycling
W: Yes. We’re comparing how two schools use recycled materials.
M: Maplewood and Riverside
W: Right. First, we looked at what the materials are made from. Maplewood uses plastic bottles to
make benches, while Riverside turns old paper into notice boards. Oh, Riverside also uses glass in art
projects, and Maplewood doesn’t.
M: Interesting. And how are you evaluating them
W: By cost, creativity, and how well the items suit school needs.
M: Good – but discuss “school needs” first. The other points depend on that.
W: Got it. We’ll spend four minutes comparing, three evaluating, and leave three for questions. Next
week, I’ll speak. And Tom handles visuals.
M: Good. Keep slides simple—just keywords. Too much text confuses listeners.
Text 9
M: Skyline Hotel. How can I help you
W: Hi, this is Linda Chen. I checked out of room 512 this morning at around 9 a.m. and headed
straight to the airport for my flight. But I just realized I left my blue wool coat in the room before the
security check!
M: Let me check … Yes, we have it!
W: Great! My flight isn’t taking off until 3 p.m. Could you put it on the 12:30 hotel bus to the airport
I’ll meet it there.
M: I’m sorry, but for security reasons, we can’t send personal items on the bus unless the guest is with
them.
W: I understand. In that case, I’ll call a taxi right now to pick it up. Once I’ve booked the ride, I’ll
inform you of the driver’s name and phone number. Could you hand the coat to him
M: Absolutely.
Text 10
W: Hello, everyone! I’d like to tell you a book that has changed my life. It’s called Great Morning. A
friend recommended this best-selling book to me one month ago because I was struggling with a busy
schedule. As a full-time senior student, in addition to completing my studies and working part-time, I
am also the singer in our school band. I often felt like there just wasn’t enough time. The book’s author
suggested waking 30 minutes earlier and making good use of the extra half-hour. At first, I hated it and
felt uncomfortable. However, I kept doing it for 28 days. I started getting up at 6:00 a.m. and then
spent five minutes writing down some thoughts. Next, I drank some water. After that, I exercised for
fifteen minutes, and lastly, looked at my schedule for the day and planned ahead. Now, I can balance
my studies and hobbies well because my day is so well-organized. If you feel like you always need
more time to get things done, I highly recommend reading this book.
