How to Stay Safe in a Thunderstorm
Thunderstorms are common natural disasters in summer. They often come with heavy rain, lightning and strong wind. If you don’t know how to protect yourself, you may get hurt. Here are some useful tips to keep you safe during a thunderstorm.
First, if you are outdoors, stay away from tall trees, power lines and metal objects (金属物体). Lightning is likely to hit these things and hurt people nearby. You should find an open area and squat down (蹲下), with your hands on your knees and your head down. Do not lie on the ground, as lightning can travel through the ground.
Second, if you are indoors, close all the windows and doors. Do not use the telephone, TV or computer, because lightning may enter the house through the wires (电线). You should also stay away from windows and balconies (阳台). If you are in the bathroom, stop taking a shower or washing your hands, as water can conduct (传导) electricity.
Third, if you are in a car, stay inside and close the windows. Do not get out of the car, even if it stops. The car can protect you from lightning because it is made of metal. You should also not touch the metal parts of the car.

The Importance of Disaster Prevention
Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and snowstorms, can bring great damage to people’s lives and property (财产). It’s very important for us to do disaster prevention (预防) work to reduce the damage.
Disaster prevention includes two parts: preparation and education. For preparation, we should prepare some emergency supplies (应急物资), such as food, water, first-aid kits and flashlights. We should also check our houses regularly to make sure they are safe. For example, we should fix the windows and doors to prevent them from being destroyed by strong wind or floods.
For education, schools should teach students about disaster safety knowledge. Teachers should tell students how to protect themselves during different disasters. Parents should also teach their children about disaster prevention at home. By learning this knowledge, students can stay calm and know what to do when disasters come.
In addition, the government should build more emergency shelters (应急避难所) and make disaster prevention plans. The community should organize disaster drills (演练) regularly to let people know how to escape and get help in emergencies.
Disaster prevention is everyone’s responsibility (责任). Only by working together can we reduce the damage of natural disasters and keep ourselves safe.

Do not run out of the house during the shaking, as falling objects may hurt us. If we are outdoors, we should stay in an open area and stay away from tall buildings, trees and power lines.
After an earthquake, we should be careful of aftershocks (余震). We should check if anyone is hurt and help them if possible. We should also check our houses for damage and do not enter if it is dangerous. In addition, we should listen to the news and follow the instructions of the government and rescue teams.
By following these steps, we can protect ourselves and our families during an earthquake.
