Task 7 Answer the questions.
1. Why does the writer mention"the Flaming Mountains" at the beginning
The writer starts with the Flaming Mountains from Journey to the West to catch readers’ interests and introduce the place — Turpan. This helps readers understand how hot and dry it is there, which leads to the question of how people survive with the karez system.
2. What can you tell about Turpan from “cook an egg on the desert sand”
This shows that Turpan is so extremely hot.
3. What’s the meaning of the title “A river of life”
The karez system is like an underground river that brings water to the desert. It gives people water to grow food and live, just like a real river brings life to the land. That’s why it’s called “a river of life.”
Think and share
1. What fact from the passage do you find the most interesting Why
E.g. I find the fact that "the karez system was built with only hand tools" most interesting. It’s amazing because the system has over 1,000 wells and 5,000 km of underground canals — such a large and complex project was completed without modern equipment, which shows the wisdom and hard work of ancient people.
Post-reading
2. With modern technology, do you think it is still necessary to
keep the karez system Why or why not
E.g. I think it’s still necessary. First, the karez system is a part of ancient Chinese culture and a valuable historical heritage. Second, even with modern technology, it still plays an important role in solving water shortages in Turpan. Also, protecting it can help us learn from ancient water-saving wisdom, which is useful for today’s environmental protection.
1. You probably remember the Flaming Mountains from
Journey to the West.
Language points
(2) Journey to the West
2. They are in Turpan, in the east of the Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region.
in the east of表示“在……
Shandong is in the east of China.
还需区分: on the east of表示“在·……的东部(外部, 接壤)”,to the east of表示“在……

Fujian Province is to the east of Hunan Province.
3. The secret lies in the ancient karez system.
The strength of the book lies in the fact that the material is from classroom experience.
(2) karez system
4. That's nearly as long as the Yellow River!
(2) as long as在此处表示“和……
You can go out to play as long as you stay in the backyard.
Keep going for as long as possible.
5. No wonder it's among the top three projects of ancient China.
(it's) no / small / little wonder (that),意为“并不奇怪,不足为奇”,常用于口语。例如:

One great example of people changing nature is the Great Wall of China. It runs across northern China, and building first started over 2,000 years ago.
The wall is over 21,000 km long—longer than the distance from Beijing to London! People built it with stone, earth, and bricks, working for many centuries. It crosses mountains and plains, changing the natural landscape into a strong defense line. Soldiers stood watch in towers and lit fires to send warning messages when enemies came.
The Great Wall is very important. It protected ancient China and is now a symbol of Chinese culture loved by visitors from all over the world. People will keep it safe for the future, so it will always stand as a sign of human wisdom.
