Different cultures follow their own special customs when a child’s teeth fall out. In Korea, for example, they have the custom of throwing lost teeth up on the roof (屋顶) of a house in order to get a new tooth. In other Asian countries, such as China and Japan, children follow a similar tradition of throwing lost teeth on the roofs of houses.
Birds aren’t the only animals to take lost teeth. In Mongolia, dogs are responsible for taking teeth away. Dogs are highly respected in Mongolian culture and are considered as guardians (守护者) of the people. Tradition says that the new tooth will be in good and strong condition if the baby tooth is fed to a guardian. So parents in Mongolia always put their child’s lost tooth in the fat of a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.
The idea of giving lost teeth to a guardian is also a tradition in the West. Many children in Western countries expect the Tooth Fairy to leave money or presents in exchange for a tooth. The exact origin (起源) of the Tooth Fairy is a mystery, although the story probably began in England or Ireland centuries ago.
According to the tradition, a child puts a lost tooth under his or her pillow (枕头) before going to bed. In the very early hours of the morning, while the child is sleeping, the Tooth Fairy takes the tooth away and leaves something else under the pillow. In France, the Tooth Fairy leaves a small gift or candies. Children love these surprises very much. In the United States, however , the Tooth Fairy usually leaves money. That can add up to a lot of money from the Tooth Fairy!

Where I’m from, we’re pretty relaxed about time. We don’t like to rush around, so we don’t mind if people are a little late sometimes. If you tell a friend you’re going to their house for dinner, it’s OK if you arrive a bit late. We like to enjoy our time slowly. We value the time we spend with our family and friends in our everyday lives. We often just drop by our friends’ homes if we have time. We don’t usually have to make plans to meet our friends. When we see each other, it’s polite for boys to shake hands and for girls to kiss each other on the side of the face. We often just walk around the town centre, seeing as many of our friends as we can!

In Switzerland, it’s very important to be on time. We’re the land of clocks and watches, after all! If someone invites you to meet him or her at noon, then you’re expected to be there at noon. If you’re even 15 minutes late, your friend may get mad. So I make an effort to be on time when I meet my friends. I always leave the house early to avoid heavy traffic. I don’t mind because I think it’s impolite to keep others waiting. Also, we never visit a friend’s house without calling first. We almost always make plans to see friends. We usually plan to do something interesting, or go somewhere together.

Festivals let us enjoy life. There are all kinds of festivals around the world. With all kinds of festivals on their way, the “gift” is always everyone’s favorite topic to think about! 1. And I have found gift-giving is quite different in the US compared with China.
2. In the US, the people who give the gift (let’s call them the “gifters”) often want to see the people who get the gift (let’s call them the “giftees”) open the present at once.
They want to see their reactions (反应) of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the gifter when receiving the gift. 3.
Another thing I found different was the openness and directness of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually done very secretly with the money put in a card. 4. In China, the practice is much more open in a flashy (显眼的) red envelope to symbolize good luck.
Finally, the value of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. 5. But in China, it can make the giftee feel embarrassed due to a sense of having to return the favor in the future to the gifter.
Traditional customs carry the values and history of a culture which help us stay connected to our roots (根). So, next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meanings are part of every action we take.
