When I was younger and living in a small flat on my own I was lonely, so I went to the cat shelter for a kitten. As I walked down the rows of cages with the assistant, one mature cat sat huddled in the back looking sad, so I stopped for a moment. “Oh, you’ll like this one,” the woman said, and before I could reply she opened the door. The cat sprang out onto me and wrapped his paws around my neck in a tight hug. “Oh, I’ve never had one do that before,” the assistant said. It was a job prying him off me and putting him back into the cage.
When I got home I couldn’t stop thinking about that poor cat. He was going to be euthanised if no one took him in, so I rang early the next morning and said I’d pick him up later that day.
When I went to work the next day, I left the cat, Sylvester, in my flat. When I got home round 6 o’clock and opened the door, Sylvester bolted outside. I thought he’d run away and was rather upset. A few minutes later, a meow at the door told me he’d come back. Then I realized I hadn’t left him a kitty-litter tray. I bought one the next day but he never seemed to use it.
One night I was awoken by Sylvester sitting on my chest with his paws over my mouth. As I started to move he pushed harder with his paws as if to say, don’t speak or move. It was then I heard drawers being quietly opened and closed. Good grief, I’ve got an intruder (入侵者), I thought. I had nothing really to steal and lay still and quiet. I heard my flat door quietly open and close. Sylvester sprung off the bed, checked all around the flat and came back to me purring, as if to say, it’s safe now.
Later, after I got married, I discovered Sylvester was using the toilet when he needed to go. He was the most amazing cat. When I arrived home from anywhere, he would jump and hug me like that very first meeting.
4. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. The author decided to adopt a kitten originally. B. The assistant knew each cat’s behavior well.
C. The cat’s unusual action surprised the assistant. D. The hug made the author adopt the cat.
5. What do Sylvester’s actions imply that night
A. He was trying to wake the author up for food. B. He sensed the danger and protected the author.
C. He was playing a game with the author. D. He was scared by the noise and sought comfort.
6. Why does the author think Sylvester is amazing
A. He uses human toilet. B. He is smart and loyal.
C. He hugs to greet. D. He stopped a robbery.
7. What life truth is reflected in the passage
A. Unintentional choices may bring precious rewards.
B. Kindness only requires giving without expecting returns.
C. Human-animal bonds are the most precious in life.
D. Details in life never affect our overall experience.

These days, artificial intelligence (AI) is showing up everywhere in our daily lives — from conference rooms to classrooms, health-care assessments to dinner table conversations. What sets AI apart from past tech innovations These advanced systems are capable of doing things that previously only humans could do — and doing them swiftly.
AI is technology that enables computers and machines to perform complex tasks that are typically associated with human intelligence, such as learning and problem-solving. When people talk about AI today, they’re usually referring to generative AI, a type of AI system that can generate writing, images, videos and computer code.
AI systems essentially operate as gigantic (巨大的) pattern-analyzing prediction machines. To create AI chatbots’ impressive language capabilities, scientists and engineers have fed practically all the text on the Internet into a type of computer system designed to identify predictable patterns in human language.
When you ask a chatbot to do something (also called giving it a prompt), it draws on the original data and patterns within its datasets to predict what words could come next to deliver a logical answer in sentence form. It doesn’t know, but it’s really good at guessing and mimicking how humans talk.
There has been increasing debate within the scientific community about whether we should categorize what AI does as “thinking”. Research has shown that some AI chatbots behave in ways that resemble thinking or judgment. But while we know how AI models work overall, we can’t currently trace the internal decisions they make to arrive at each specific response.
“The questions about consciousness are infamously hard,” says Vincent Conitzer, a professor of computer science and philosophy at Oxford and Carnegie Mellon universities. “We really need to make progress on them if we truly want to understand in what ways we can say AI thinks.” But it’s safe to say that right now, AI is not like the sentient superintelligence you’ve seen in movies.
8. What makes AI different from previous technological innovations
A. It replaces human jobs in many fields. B. This tech can understand human emotions deeply.
C. It helps create new artistic and media works. D. Complex human-like tasks get finished quickly by it.
9. How do AI chatbots generate their responses
A. By understanding the true meaning of questions
B. By copying human conversations from the Internet
C. By predicting word patterns from massive data
D. By making independent logical judgments
10. What does Paragraph 5 reveal about AI’s so-called “thinking”
A. Scientists have confirmed that AI can really think.
B. AI is similar to human in decision-making.
C. We can completely track how AI thinks internally.
D. Real AI has the conscious superintelligence we see in movies.
11. What does Vincent Conitzer think is key to understanding AI’s thinking
A. To develop advanced AI to gain consciousness
B. To set strict rules for AI development
C. To further explore the questions about AI consciousness
D. To educate the public on AI’s potential risks
D
A study has found that red squirrels are coming under increasing competition from grey squirrels. However, a team of conservationists has developed a system that could support the red squirrel population-and it is being tested in several woodlands.
Red squirrels have lived in the UK for around 10,000 years but it’s thought that there are only around 160,000 left. They once lived in most woodlands but now they’re restricted to northern England, Scotland, the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England and Anglesey in north Wales.
By contrast, there are 2.7 million grey squirrels in the UK. Grey squirrels, which were introduced from North America in 1876, are bigger, so they are better at vying for food and areas to live. They also carry a virus called squirrelpox, which isn’t detrimental to grey squirrels but can be dangerous for the reds.
To reverse the decline in red squirrel numbers, scientists have created an AI-driven conservation system called Squirrel Agent. It’s trained on thousands of clear images of the two species in all kinds of woodland conditions — different light, varying tree cover, and distinct squirrel postures — and this targeted training lets it tell red and grey squirrels apart with great precision, hitting a steady 97% identification accuracy rate in real forest tests.
The system is designed to help red squirrels by giving them extra food, while curbing grey squirrel populations from getting even bigger. Using the information it has learned, the AI lets red squirrels get to feeders where they can eat lots of food without being chased off by greys. To stop the grey population expanding, the system can offer greys other food covered with a paste that stops them having babies. A human checks the AI has identified greys properly.
Researchers think the AI could also be taught to identify individual squirrels by their whiskers, which are unique for each animal (like fingerprints). This could help experts track squirrels more closely.
12. What is the present situation of UK red squirrels
A. Their number has stayed the same for ages. B. They live in woodlands all over the UK.
C. They compete with squirrels from Europe. D. Their living area has become much smaller.
13. The word “vying” in paragraph 3 most probably means “______”.
A. fighting B. searching C. begging D. hiding
14. How does the system mainly control grey squirrels
A. By removing them from the woodlands directly B. By training them to stay away from feeders
C. By using AI to drive them from feeding spots D. By giving them food that stops reproduction
15. What is the best title of the passage
A. Blaming the historical bringing of grey squirrels B. Using AI to fix a wildlife balance problem
C. Comparing two squirrel species’ traits and habits D. Arguing for total removal of grey squirrels in UK

“Social anxiety” has become one of the most popular labels among high school students. ____16____ Afraid to speak in class Social anxiety. Avoid saying hello to classmates Social anxiety. Reluctant to hang out on weekends Social anxiety. The term has become a convenient shield (盾) for many adolescents.
But here’s the interesting thing: many who claim to be “socially anxious” are surprisingly active online. They send dozens of messages in group chats and talk to gaming teammates until midnight. ____17____ This suggests the problem isn’t a lack of communication skills— it’s a specific fear of face-to-face interaction.
___18___ It’s known that real-life conversations can’t be edited. You can’t delete an awkward sentence or pretend you didn’t see someone’s reaction. Online, you have perfect control: think before you type, reply when you’re ready. Offline, there’s nowhere to hide.
Behind this avoidance lies a deeper fear— the fear of being judged. Every word spoken in person invites immediate feedback: a raised eyebrow, a pause, or a certain tone. So you step aback and shut yourself from the genuine interaction. “I have social anxiety” becomes a label stuck to themselves. ____19____
The truth, nevertheless, is that social skills are like muscles— use them or lose them. The more you avoid social situations, the rustier you get. Social anxiety is real, but it shouldn’t be a destination. Embarrassment, awkward silences, and flushings are not signs of failure. They are simply the price of growth in the real world. ____20____ Then we can break away from the limitations of our inner world.
A. What leads to this fear
B. Why is this problem so annoying
C. Admit the fear, and choose to try anyway.
D. This protects self-esteem, but it also blocks growth.
E. It can be easily seen in almost every corner of daily campus life.
F. Only older generations truly understand what social anxiety means.
G. They can even write long and detailed comments to their favorite influencers

It was a bitter winter noon, and the small restaurant offered a warm shelter from the biting wind outside. Steve, dressed in a plain winter coat, brought his son to a table by the window. The boy’s eyes lit up — this was the place where he always got his favorite dish. “Dad, I want the braised ribs” he said excitedly, rubbing his cold hands together. Steve smiled. “Alright, alright. And some vegetables too.”
As they waited for their order, the door creaked open, letting in a gust of freezing air. An elderly man walked in slowly, leaning heavily on a cane. A worn-out backpack hung from his bent shoulders, and his thin jacket looked no match for the cold. He approached the counter with hesitation, his eyes glancing nervously across the menu board. “Excuse me,” he said in a low, unsteady voice. “Could I… just buy a bowl of rice Nothing else.” The waiter paused. They only served set meals, but seeing the old man’s pale, shivering hands, he nodded after a moment. “Alright, sir. Please have a seat by the heater.”
Relief washed over the old man’s face. He fumbled with a small plastic bag from his jacket, pulling out a few crumpled (皱巴巴的) banknotes and counting them carefully before handing them over. The waiter placed a bowl of plain white rice on a corner table near the radiator. The old man made his way there, his cane tapping softly on the floor. He sat down, cupping his hands around the warm bowl to chase away the chill.
Then he picked up his chopsticks and stared at the rice for a long moment. Outside, snow began to fall softly against the frosted window; inside, the clatter of dishes and the warmth of the heater filled the air. The old man lowered his head, took a slow bite of rice, and chewed for a long time.

【答案】Dear editor,
I’m writing to offer my practical suggestion for the open space beside our school library. I suggest turning it into a leisure and communication area for students.
Firstly, it’s close to the library, so we can easily discuss study topics with classmates there after borrowing books. Secondly, adding some green plants and comfortable benches can provide a nice place for us to relax our eyes and minds between classes. What’s more, it can be a perfect spot to make friends and share ideas face to face, which helps improve our social skills a lot.
I truly hope my suggestion will be taken into consideration.
Yours,

【47题答案】
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The old man was having his meal when his daughter called. He picked up the phone with trembling hands, his voice soft and weak. When his daughter asked about his lunch, he lied that he was having a rich meal with meat, not wanting her to worry about his hard life alone in the city. After hanging up, he wiped the tears from his eyes and took another slow bite of plain rice. Steve watched this quietly, his heart filled with deep sympathy. He called the waiter over, whispered a few words, and paid for a plate of braised ribs for the old man without hesitation.
Paragraph 2:
Hurriedly, the old man told the waiter that he hadn’t ordered this dish. The waiter smiled and pointed to Steve’s table, explaining it was a warm gift from the kind gentleman there. The old man turned to Steve, his eyes full of surprise and gratitude. He walked over and thanked Steve repeatedly. Steve shook his head gently, saying it was just a small thing and hoped the ribs could warm him up on the cold day. The little boy also handed the old man a sweet candy, and the cold winter noon was filled with warm light because of this small kindness.
