Deadline: 30 November
Results: Announced on 31 December
Prizes: Win $1,600 in prize money
Guest judges: Ken Liu, Brian Evenson, and Faylita Hicks

Submission Guidelines
We accept works, written in English, from anywhere in the world. But we don’t accept works previously published elsewhere.
Writers over the age of 13 are welcome to participate. Please note that if you’re aged 13—16 and your work is selected for publication, we’ll require a signature from a parent or a guardian.

We edit every piece accepted for publication whether your work is selected for publication through our online blog or in our print magazine. For this cooperative process we’ll pair you with one of our senior editors. All our editors have been trained to help guide the development of each piece to reach its fullest potential in keeping with the author’s vision. This doesn’t mean we’ll take on a wild jumble of words and half-formed thoughts.
Notes
The contest reserves the right to NOT award a winner if the submissions don’t reach a publishable standard. In this case, the winner won’t be announced. Although this has rarely come to pass in our six-year publishing history, our top priority must remain with the quality of the work we publish.

Here we are, wrapping up 2023 in a red bow like one of the holiday presents in a TV commercial. It was a year full of poetic discoveries for our editorial team and especially for me. I encountered so many new-to-me poets. Diana Solís from the December 2022 issue and Joyce Mansour from the June 2023 issue are examples of this: Poets with whom I was unfamiliar and who have now become part of my daily conversation. Living in Chicago, I might have encountered Diana Solís some other way. She is an icon of revolutionary poetry and photography. What a gift to learn, to be enthusiastic about new poetics like I’m still in the front row of the classroom, trying to do my best.
Two truths I’ve learnt about Chicago since moving here: Chicago is a city that holds things close and doesn’t need to show off about its riches. And there are riches everywhere—great music all over the place, the best pizza, an embarrassment of architectures, and, of course, poetry on every corner. Nelson Algren said every great writer must spend time in Chicago.
The final version of 2023 is from a distinguished Chicagoan, the poet and journalist Frank Marshall Davis. When I read his work for the first time, I was struck by the truth of the poems, his clear-eyed critique. He was a truth teller when no one wanted to listen. This issue also includes poems of another Chicago great, Li-Young Lee. His poems taught me how to think about romance as an engine for a poem. Multiple generations of poets have been using the man’s gestures in their love poems, often without realising it, because even their teachers were borrowing from Li-Young Lee too.
So maybe that is why this issue has me in my holiday feels. Poems can be for the poet and the community concurrently, an offering of the self that indicates the care of the giver.

When facing an extremely annoying problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm, aiming to get the best ideas quickly. I love seeing it happen—except for one tiny wrinkle. Group brainstorming usually backfires.
In brainstorming meetings, many good ideas are lost—and few are gained. Extensive evidence shows that when generating ideas together, we fail to maximise collective intelligence. Surprisingly enough, individuals working alone tend to produce more and better ideas compared to brainstorming in groups.
To unearth the hidden potential in teams, instead of brainstorming, a shift to a process called “brainwriting” is more effective. Initially, you ask everyone to generate ideas independently. Next, you pool them and share them anonymously (匿名地) among the group.
To preserve independent judgment, each member evaluates them on their own. Only then does the team come together to select and refine the most promising options. By developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing and detailing them, teams can surface and advance possibilities that might not get attention otherwise.
For instance, during the 2010 Chilean mine rescue, with time pressing, the rescue team established a global brainwriting system to crowd source independent ideas, avoiding time-consuming brainstorming. An entrepreneur offered a tiny plastic telephone that became the sole means of communicating with the miners while a 24-year-old engineer’s suggestion resulted in the creation of a specialised drill that ultimately saved the miners.
Research by organisational behaviour scholar Anita Woolley and her colleagues helps to explain why this method works. They find that a key to collective intelligence is balanced participation. In brainstorming meetings, participation can easily become dominated by the most influential people. The brainwriting process ensures that all ideas are brought to the table
and all voices are brought into the conversation. The goal isn’t to be the smartest person in the room—it’s to make the room smarter.
Collective intelligence begins with individual creativity, but it doesn’t end there. Individuals working alone produce greater varieties of novel ideas, both brilliant and terrible, than groups. It takes collective judgment to locate the signal within the noise and extract the best ideas.

The following will tell you how to write your own songs and poems, which convey your message and help people connect with your music.
Use stream of consciousness exercises.
Stream of consciousness writing is where you just write and keep writing: just write everything that comes into your head. Do your exercises every day to help you brainstorm.
 12 .
Look at existing songs and poems.
Look at popular songs and poems that are known for great lyrics to get inspiration. 13 , and you can learn about them a lot from thinking about what makes a good one or a bad one. Look for the kinds of things they talk about, how they talk about them, what rhymes they use, the rhythm of the lyrics (歌词), etc.
 14 .
Decide what type of music you want to write, and figure out what types of lyrics you like and dislike. It’s really up to you what kind of music you want to write.
Keep writing to get to the good stuff.
Get a journal and be ready to write down a lot of stuff. Write as much as you can until you feel it is finished or ready to be set aside. Don’t worry if what you’re putting down on paper doesn’t look like a song at first. 15 . Lyric writing may go through stages.
Write all the time.
Write about your feelings, the world around you, a person or a thing that matters to you. This is to help you find the words most worthy of a song, or a poem. 16 . Or even have an emotion. A shopping list could be poetic if done right.
