These days, a dependable WiFi signal is far more than a convenience. We count on Internet service to deal with the fun things like streaming movies. But we also depend on it to spread and receive information, making a strong connection important. Unluckily, many people struggle with WiFi problems in their homes. The good news A range of easy methods can help, from repositioning your existing router (路由器) to trying a new router.
If the signal from your Internet service provider seems fine, you’ll need to check your router. Start with an easy fix: Move your router to a better location. Think of it like a light that’s supposed to brighten up a whole room. For the best results, the router should be in an open, central, heightened position, rather than in a closet, behind a TV, or on the floor.
If moving the router doesn’t solve the problem, you might need to try one of the following top-rated single-unit routers.
Model Overall score Price Test results
AX4200 90 $165 ★★★★★
BE6800 88 $300 ★★★★★
XR1000 82 $290 ★★★★
AX5400 80 $155 ★★★★
For a single dead corner of your house, you can try a low-cost WiFi extender, a piece of equipment that connects to electricity and sends the signal deeper into your home. For the best results, place it about halfway between your router and the dead corner. However, this solution has disadvantages. Extenders often create a separate WiFi network that you have to join through your computer, and they can cut the connection speed by half. But the signal should be good enough for basic tasks like web surfing.
1. Where should a router be placed for the best results
A. In a corner. B. Behind a TV.
C. Under the dining table. D. On an open bookshelf.
2. Which model of routers offers the best value for money
A. AX4200. B. BE6800. C. XR1000. D. AX5400.
3. What is the limitation of a WiFi extender
A. Its price is high. B. Its size is large.
C. It slows down the Internet speed. D. It puts users’ personal information at risk.

If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh — ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good — looking, too. Right But what do other people think about your generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face — down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life — or “IRL”, as you would say
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra — curricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face — down generation need a heads — up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh — ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face — down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).
8. According to the passage, what is a common concern among some adults about the “face — down generation”
A. They lack creativity and intelligence.
B. They are too focused on their phones rather than the real world.
C. They have no interest in extra — curricular activities.
D. They are unwilling to use modern technology.
9. The underlined phrase “helicopter parents” in Paragraph 3 most probably means parents who _________.
A. work as a helicopter pilot B. often travel around by helicopter
C. are overly involved in their child’s life D. encourage their child to be independent
10. What can we infer about the writer’s attitude towards the younger generation
A. Worried and critical. B. Hopeful and positive.
C. Indifferent and neutral. D. Doubtful but curious.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Rise of Helicopter Parents
B. Challenges Facing Today’s Youth
C. The Face — Down Generation: A Reason to Be Hopeful
D. How to Deal with Teenagers’ Phone Addiction
D
Imagine the final stretch of a marathon: your body aches, but the cheering crowd gives you energy to run faster. Similarly, a basketball team wins more home games in front of their own fans. Even you might solve a problem faster when someone watches. These common experiences all point to a basic psychological principle.
This phenomenon is known as social facilitation (促进), which describes how individuals can perform tasks differently when in the company of others compared to when they are alone. The concept was first proposed by psychologist Norman Tripplett, who noticed that cyclists raced faster in groups. He tested his theory with a simple experiment where children were tasked with winding fishing line. Tripplett observed that the children who were being around others moved faster, suggesting that a peer (同龄人) nearby can motivate.
But later studies found conflicting evidence. In another test, participants were given a more complex task, like memorizing a list of words. Those in front of others performed worse than those working alone. This contradiction (矛盾) led to a key change of the theory. The presence of an audience tends to improve performance on simple tasks. On the other hand, for novel tasks, the same audience can hurt performance.
Why does this happen Psychologists suggest the key reason is our concern about being judged by others. Since approval and disapproval often depend on others’ evaluations, we naturally become more alert in front of an audience. This alertness helps with mastered skills, but gets in the way of learning new ones.
There isn’t one recipe for success, but social facilitation theory helps to point us in the right direction. To improve a well-practiced skill like running or playing an instrument, strategically seek an audience by joining a club or performing publicly. If you struggle when watched, practice alone until you gain confidence. By taking advantage of social settings wisely, we can use the audience effect to achieve our best performance.
12. What is the main idea of social facilitation
A. Group interaction enhances learning efficiency.
B. Individual performance peaks in competitive settings.
C. Social situations have predictable effects on behavior.
D. The presence of others can influence our performance.
13. Which factor can explain the conflicting results in paragraph 3
A. The size of the audience. B. The difficulty of the task.
C. The type of the reward. D. The personality of the participant.
14. What is the root cause of social facilitation
A. Evaluation anxiety. B. Peer pressure.
C. Competitive desire. D. Personal standard.
15. What does the author suggest we do about the phenomenon
A. Gradually increase audience size. B. Thoughtfully manage social contexts.
C. Actively observe others' performances. D. Strategically seek supportive audiences.

How to Deliver Effective Presentations
Delivering presentations is an everyday art form that anyone can master. To capture your audience’s attention, present your information with ease and confidence. To get this level of fluency, write an engaging narrative, use more visuals than text in your slides, and practice, practice, practice.
Think of your presentation as a story. ____16____ Start by setting the stage, then pull your audience into a tale with an exciting climax (高潮). It may help to start your presentation with a question or a dilemma so they feel involved from the start.
Make your slides as visual as possible. ____17____ Instead, present charts, graphs, photos, or illustrations that only you can explain. This way, your audience remains focused on you.
Include humor. ____18____ Try leading your audience up to a point that sounds as if it will be serious, technical, or even dangerous, and then surprise them with a joke. If your presentation has a lot of data, you might transition between topics with funny visuals.
____19____ If you are working with a small crowd, you can talk directly to members of the audience. Ask someone to tell a joke to get you warmed up, or quiz audience members about their experience with something related to your topic. If it’s a large group, ask questions that each audience member can answer with a show of hands.
With practice and preparation, you can deliver presentations that inform, engage, and inspire. But even the best plan can run into trouble. ____20____ For example, if the microphone stops working or a slide won’t load, staying calm and handling it gracefully can actually strengthen your connection with the audience.
A. Make jokes and tell funny anecdotes.
B. Find ways to make your presentation interactive.
C. Therefore, you’d better prepare for potential technical failures.
D. As you write, organize it along a story line instead of by topics.
E. This is why having a backup plan is essential for any presenter.
F. Avoid long sentences that explain everything you are going to say.
G. Practice your speech in front of a mirror to check your body language.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye ” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you ” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua. Learning that our school is looking for an English host for the Youth Day art show, I’m writing to apply for the position.
I really want to take part in this meaningful activity. Youth Day inspires us to be responsible and energetic, and I hope to show the spirit of Chinese youth to foreign teachers through hosting. Besides, I have many advantages. I have a good command of English and can speak fluently. Also, I once hosted an English party, so I’m experienced and confident on stage. I’m easy to work with and will make full preparations.
I would appreciate it if I could be chosen.
Yours,

答案】Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.
