It is difficult to imagine a society without the assurance (保证) that skilled,professional paramedics will respond to a medical emergency.But before the 1970s,insufficient,disorganized care,often at the hands of constantly busy police officers,was the standard for emergencies.So much so that careless ambulance care was responsible for an estimated 1,200 to 2,000 preventable deaths per year in the United States,according to journalist and former paramedic Kevin Hazzard.
In his new book American Sirens,Hazzard relates the eight-year story (from 1968 to 1975) of the Freedom House Ambulance Service,an all-black team of paramedics in Pittsburgh.The book documents an untold piece of American history,recording how Freedom House saved thousands of lives and influenced the arrival of professional paramedic services in cities across the U.S.,eventually setting the gold standard of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).Its author wants readers to know there were too many innovations that were born out of Freedom House.
Most shocking are the stories of preventable deaths,particularly in ignored communities,before the arrival of EMS,illustrating the huge gap the Freedom House service filled.Wealthy,white Pittsburgh residents could afford private ambulances,while residents of the Hill District,the city’s oldest black neighborhood,barely received basic city services,let alone a chance for survival in a medical emergency.
By 1972,Freedom House employed 35 members,received 7,000 calls a year,and its leaders had set up the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to formalize the field.“A lot of people know Emergency Care in the Streets written by Nancy Caroline (the first medical director of Freedom House);it’s one of the most important textbooks for EMS,”said Hazzard.“But where did that information come from How did she test those ideas and those theories They came from the couple dozen people at Freedom House.Their work influenced what people did four decades later and it is an extraordinary legacy (遗产).The stamp that they left on the field of EMS simply cannot be underestimated.”

Shetland Tall Ships Ltd has appointed Grampian Training Services to provide first aid cover at this summer’s four-day event in Lerwick.There are currently no commercial first aid services available in the islands following a decision by the Red Cross to discontinue its provision a few years ago.
Grampian Training Services intends to train up a team of 12 local first aid responders to complement (补充) its own staff—which should deliver a lasting benefit to the Shetland community beyond the Tall Ships event.The company is run by Tom Malcolm,who worked at the first Lerwick Tall Ships event back in 1999 when he was employed by the Red Cross.“We’re obviously pleased to have got the contract (合同),”he said.“We’re looking forward to working with all of our partners to ensure everyone has a safe,fun time.The last time I was up here everyone had a great time.We’re more or less an insurance policy (保险单) in case something goes wrong,so hopefully we’ll be around enjoying it too.”
Grampian Training Services will train locals to a first responder or FRIC3 level with the aim that the service can then be provided on an ongoing basis for local events.In addition to the wider community benefit,it will reduce the number of personnel required to travel to Shetland for the event.
Malcolm’s company also provides regular first aid training to a range of government staff including those within the education and social work departments.It is currently expanding to offer cover for regular community events.
Malcolm said that so far five people had been signed up locally and he is keen to recruit (招募) an additional seven.A blue light ambulance will also be sourced to provide medical cover in addition to first aid at July’s event.
“We’re trying to build a team up here who will not just be available for Tall Ships,but also for many other events in the community beyond July,”he added.“If anyone is looking for work as first aid cover,get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

Many people care about their kids’ academic performances only.They don’t care about their kids’ P.E.performance at all.Even if kids have P.E.classes,parents care little.P.E.teachers are in humble position and their classes are often occupied by other teachers.Of course,if students’ P.E.performance is related to grades and entrance exams,parents won’t mind “a P.E.teacher being the head-teacher”.
At the moment,P.E.is gradually included in entrance exams.
In terms of high school entrance examination,Guangzhou launched a new high school entrance exam which included P.E.performance and Health examination in 2021,raising the score to 70 points.
In terms of the college entrance examination,universities having the right of independent enrollments added P.E.tests to their entrance exams in 2019.This practice is seen as an important signal that the assessment of physical fitness and athletic ability,which are important aspects of a student’s overall quality,may be included in the college entrance examination in the future.
