A honeybee's life depends on it successfully harvesting nectar（花蜜）from flowers to make honey. Deciding which flower is most likely to offer nectar is incredibly difficult. In the new research published recently, our team reports how bees make these complex decisions.
We challenged bees with a field of artificial flowers, each of which offered a tiny drop of sugar syrup. Different-colored "flowers" varied in their likelihood of offering sugar. We put tiny, harmless paint marks on the back of each bee, and filmed every visit a bee made to the flower array. We then used computer vision and machine learning to automatically extract and study the route on which bees flew. From this information, we found bees soon learned to identify the most rewarding flowers. They quickly assessed whether to accept or reject flowers, but surprisingly, they made correct decisions within 0.6 second while incorrect decisions took them 1.2 seconds on average.
The results and what we expected are poles apart. Usually, in animals, an accurate decision takes longer than an inaccurate decision. This is called the speed-accuracy trade-off, which happens because determining whether a decision is right or wrong usually depends on how much evidence we have to make that decision. More evidence means a more accurate decision, but gathering evidence takes time. So accurate decisions are usually slow and inaccurate decisions are faster. But bees only accepted a flower if, at a glance, they were sure it was rewarding. If they had any uncertainty, they rejected it. They might have missed some rewarding flowers, but they successfully focused their efforts only on the flowers with the best chance and best evidence of providing them with sugar.
The only other animals known to beat the speed-accuracy trade-off are humans and primates. It's indeed amazing that bees seem to be pushing the boundaries.

In Moby Dick, Herman Melville's novel of 1851, the author asks if whales would survive the cruel human hunt. Yes, he says, as he foresees a future flooded world in which the whale would outlive us. Now, the findings of a new study prove that whales can indeed live for a very long time.
It has been known since the 1990s that Arctic bowhead whales, with their slow metabolism（新陈代谢）enabled by cold waters and plentiful food, can live up to 200 years or more, as indicated by tests on the proteins in their eyes, and by old Inuit stone harpoon（鱼叉）tips found in bowheads that had survived earlier hunts. But the new study indicates that the same lifespans may also apply to right whales.
The scientists achieved their new findings by analysing the lifespans of two similar species: the southern right whale—found below the equator—and the North Atlantic right whale, once plentiful off north European shores but now found almost only along the eastern coast of the US. They discovered that up to 10% of the thriving southern species lived past 130 years. Of the much-hunted northern species, only 10% lived beyond 47 years.
But it is a race against time. The population of the North Atlantic right whale, a close relative of the bowhead, has decreased so much after the intensive hunts of the past that it is beyond recovery. According to Massachusetts' Center for Coastal Studies (CCS), which has carried out one of the longest-running studies of the critically endangered population, there are only 372 individuals left. Declining genetic strength, ship strikes, entanglement（缠绕）in fishing gear and sound pollution have weakened them to the extent that they have now been declared "functionally extinct" in the eastern Atlantic, while the west Atlantic population is "not recovering".
"Longevity（长寿）is critically important to species that produce small numbers of young. So human-caused death is shortening the whales' natural lifespan and reproductive period so much that they are threatened with extinction. We must do something. Although it may already be too late to do anything, doing something is better than nothing," says Dr. Charles "Stormy" Mayo, senior scientist at the CCS.
