Lewis was an experienced swimmer with 23 years of training behind him. He had also served in the British army, where he had learned one golden rule: speed and aggression win every time. He had applied this rule to every competition in his life, and it had never failed him.
Last year, after hearing about the melting of the Himalayas caused by climate change, he decided to swim in a small icy lake at the foot of Mount Everest. He was confident — perhaps too confident. He told his team, “I’ve swum in cold waters before. This will be no different.”
When they reached the lake, Lewis prepared exactly as he always did. He put on his iPod, stuck the earphones in, and turned up the music — the same intense playlist he had used for every major race. He paced back and forth, repeating to himself: speed, aggression, speed, aggression. Without a moment’s hesitation, he threw himself into the freezing water.
For the first hundred meters, he swam as quickly as he could. His old method seemed to be working. But then, something went terribly wrong. His fingers began to swell, growing to the size of sausages. A frightening thought crossed his mind: water expands when it freezes, and his body was mostly water. He had never considered this before — because he had never faced such extreme cold.
Soon, he could barely breathe. He began to choke and even vomited (呕吐) in the water. His speed and aggression had turned against him. He sank underwater. Luckily, the lake was shallow, and he pushed himself off the bottom to safety.
Back at camp, he expected comfort. Instead, his team gave it to him straight. One of them said, “Your old rules don’t apply here. You need a complete shift if you want to make it.”
