Dear Peter,
I am glad to hear that you are interested in Chinese intangible
cultural heritage. Today I'd like to introduce my favorite one,
paper-cutting to you.
Paper-cutting is a traditional Chinese folk art with a long history of
more than 1,500 years. Usually, people use red paper and scissors to
make it. We fold the paper first and then cut different patterns like
flowers, cute animals or Chinese characters on it. It's widely used as a
decoration, especially during the Spring Festival. What's more, it
symbolizes good luck and people's best wishes for a happy life.
It's really amazing, isn't it I hope you can come to China to learn it
one day.
Love,
Li Hua

For many of us, there is nothing better than reading a good book, whether it's an exciting
story or a beautiful poem. Reading a book is a good way to break away from our busy life
and help us relax. Maybe that's why some of the books are actually seen as a treatment for
sickness.
It is clear that reading is good for us. It can be educational and it can open the mind. A
good novel can make us happy or sad, or make us cry with the characters. The power of
books was recognized a few years ago by the British Charity Reading Agency. It published a
list of books that doctors could offer to patients who deal with depression(抑郁).
Professor Philip Davis studies the effects of literature at Liverpool University. He studies
people in reading groups and finds that reading literature has the best effect. In an interview,he
told the BBC,“… When reading literature, the brain begins to work from different parts, and you
can see the brain coming to life.”
Of course, these days it's easy for some of us to throw away a good book and spend much
time on the phones instead. But opening up a book could be a simple way to help us improve or
keep our mental health. They can help us find our goals.
If you don't know what books to read, you could read book reviews, visit a library or
bookshop or ask a friend. Once you' ve found the right book, you will be hooked and you won't
want to put it down! And if you still love your technology, you could always use an e-reader.
23. Why are books seen as a treatment for sickness
A. Because they excite us easily.
B. Because they relax us from busy life.
C. Because they tell us information about medicine.

C. The ways of reading good books.

A. 无聊的 B. 失望的 C.入迷的

Intangible cultural heritage (ICH)(非物质文化遗产) refers to traditional culture and skills
that are passed down from generation to generation. In China, there are many kinds of ICH,
and they are important parts of our culture.
China has a long history, so it has rich intangible cultural heritage. It includes traditional
arts, music, dance, festivals, food-making skills and handicrafts. For example, paper
cutting,Beijing Opera and Chinese tea art are all famous forms of ICH. These things show the
wisdom of Chinese people. Many great artists work hard to keep these traditions alive. For
example, Wang Binying, a famous paper-cutting artist, has created many beautiful works and
taught thousands of students. Mei Baojiu, a great master of Beijing Opera, spent his life
spreading this traditional art to the world.

traditional skills because of the fast development of modern life. On the other hand, many old
artists are getting old.

museums. Schools also teach students about traditional culture.
