But when they returned, John found hemissed the classroom so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching. Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students Education(VISE),which pairs up energetic people with educational experience usually retired teachers, with childrenwhose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities toattend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed ofrunning with circus but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore hewas immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with StardustCircus. The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules.“The eight-year-old Itutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeter board(跷跷板)act”he explains.“A bigguy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转)andland on his uncle’s shoulders...and his uncle was standing on the boy's father's shoulders!”The circus still includes some animal acts including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs.John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lionsroaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege inviting him in tomeet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for Johnit was a never-to-be-forgotten experience which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75thyear.24. What can we learn from the passage A.Teachers of the VISE program live too far away.B. Children in the circus are taught at fixed time.C. John instructed the gymnast’s performance of swinging in the air.D. The couple enjoyed sleeping with the sound of lions roaring.26. Which word best describes John’s experience of meeting the little lions A. Scary. B. Upsetting. C. Boring. D. Memorable.27. What is the best title for the text A. Working for a Living B. Returning to SchoolC. Running with the Circus D. Travelling with AnimalsCAs explorers of the wild, penguins often wander around. Normally, these ice-coldexplorations are pretty short-lived. But one emperor penguin, now named Gus, alone and hungry, recently landed on a beach in Australia, more than 2,000 miles away from its native Antarctica. Inthe bird world, rare migrations such as these are referred to as vagrancies (流浪 ), says CaseyYoungflesh, an associate professor at Clemson University.Living in the coldest place on Earth, emperor penguins, which can grow up to 45 inches talland live between 15 and 20 years, typically live in groups with populations that can range from afew hundred to thousands of members. But even large population isn’t a guarantee of survival, andpenguins survived due to several unique adaptations.Thick feathers protect penguins from Antarctica’s cold temperatures and high winds, andsubstantial (大量的) fat stores allow them to survive with little or no food for long periods. Theseanimals are also remarkable swimmers, capable of diving to depths of over 450 meters. Thesecharacteristics could certainly have helped this male penguin make the journey to Australia, saysYoungflesh.Determining what exactly caused the penguin to end up in Australia is another matter, assome experts suggest that he could have been blown off course by a storm and gotten lost or hadsome of its other navigational senses disturbed in some way.Despite how infrequently penguins land on Australia, Gus’s case may indicate how quicklythe Antarctic environment is changing and how local species are affected. Emperor penguins, forexample, depend on stable sea ice to reproduce, but as climate change increasingly causes iceshelves to melt, the species is expected to undergo rapid population decline in the next fewdecades. Vast environmental changes and less food sources mean that some animals must searchfarther for food and shelter than they otherwise would. To that end, while this unusual event isn’t高二英语试卷 第 3 页 共 7 页currently indication of a larger pattern, experts should take note as animal vagrancy can expand inthe future, says Youngflesh.28. What can we learn about emperor penguins A. They rarely explore the wild.B. They tend to live in communities.C. They migrate to Australia for food.D. They live longer than other animals.29. Which feature enabled Gus to survive during the journey A. Its waterproof feathers. B. Its considerable fat stores.C. Its disturbed navigational senses. D. Its adaptation to animal vagrancy.30. What can we infer from the last paragraph A. Animal vagrancies are likely to increase in frequency.B. A large pattern of penguins wandering alone is formed.C. Environmental changes may speed penguins’ extinction.D. Human interference is needed to bring this penguin back.31. What is the main idea of the text A. The climate change intensifies in AntarcticaB. A penguin successfully survived the elementsC. A male penguin ended up on distant AustraliaD. Animal vagrancy draws attention from expertsDTaking at least twenty minutes out of your day to walk or sit in a place that makes you feel incontact with nature will significantly lower your stress hormone levels. That's the finding of astudy that has established for the first time the most effective amount of an urban natureexperience. Healthcare professionals can use this discovery to prescribe (开药) “nature-pills" inthe knowledge that they have a real measurable effect"We know that spending time in nature reduces stress, but until now it was unclear how muchis enough, how often to do it, or even what kind of nature experience will benefit us,” says Dr.Hunter, a lead author of this research. “Our study shows that for the greatest payoff, in terms ofefficiently lowering levels of the stress hormone, you should spend 20 to 30 minutes sitting orwalking in a place that provides you with a sense of nature. To assist healthcare professionals looking for evidence-based guidelines on what exactly todistribute, Hunter and her colleagues designed an experiment that would give a realistic estimateof an effective amount.Over an 8-week period, participants were asked to take a nature pill with a duration of 10minutes or more, at least 3 times a week. Levels of stress hormone, were measured from saliva (唾液)samples taken before and after a nature pill, once every two weeks. The data revealed that justa twenty-minute nature experience was enough to significantly reduce stress levels.Healthcare professionals can use our results as an evidence-based rule of thumb on what toput in a nature-pill prescription," said Hunter. "It provides the first estimates of how na- tureexperiences impact stress levels in the context of normal daily life. It breaks new ground byaddressing some of the complexities of measuring an effective nature amount."32. What's the great significance of the study A. It finds out a new way to release stress.B. It can help doctors prescribe various pillsC. It makes it clear that exercise can help release stress.D. It finds out the accurate amount of nature experience.33. How did Hunter get the finding A. By working with some doctors. B. By asking participants questions.C. By carrying out an experiment. D. By comparing the previous data.34. What did Hunter think of the result of the study A. It has drawbacks. B. It's meaningful.C. It's worth researching further. D. It needs more discussions.35. What's the main idea of the text A. Nature has close relationship with stress.B. We should stay in nature to keep healthy.C. We cannot get close to nature frequently.D. Staying in nature for proper time will lower stress level.高二英语试卷 第 4 页 共 7 页第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。What makes great storytelling for film There are some tips for filmmakers about the art of it.One of the most important elements of great storytelling for film is how the story is told.Great movies can throw curveballs (曲线球) that you don’t see coming. ___36___ The standardstructure for any kind of storytelling is to introduce your characters, setting and genre at the start.Any problems should be encountered somewhere in the middle of the story. ___37___ If you’vegot a brilliant story, think about what would happen if you began your film with the ending. Now he’s gone and I can’t find him anywhere.”My mother was very angry with me; she said I should have been more responsible. Shedecided to help by making some signs. The signs read, “Lost: A big black dog. Please call us rightaway” and she printed our phone number on the bottom. “Okay, Darrell,” she said, as she handedover those signs, “now go post these on all the street posts.”My sister and I grabbed the signs and we posted them along our street as well as along thesurrounding streets.
