national parks and reserves. Media-loved volunteers may also get involved in park projects related
to video creation, photography and image arts.
National parks and reserves volunteers typically work five days, from Monday to Friday.
Working hours are from 8 a. m. until 3 p. m. However, schedules and exact duties may vary
depending on the park you’re based at, your qualifications, and the time and duration of your stay.

In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his
wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he
missed the classroom so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students Education(VISE),
which pairs up energetic people with educational experience usually retired teachers, with children
whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to
attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of
running with circus but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person.Therefore he
was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust
Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules.“The eight-year-old I

guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转)and
land on his uncle’s shoulders...and his uncle was standing on the boy's father's shoulders!”
The circus still includes some animal acts including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs.
John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions
roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege inviting him in to
meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John
it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th
year.

As explorers of the wild, penguins often wander around. Normally, these ice-cold
explorations are pretty short-lived. But one emperor penguin, now named Gus, alone and hungry,
recently landed on a beach in Australia, more than 2,000 miles away from its native Antarctica. In
the bird world, rare migrations such as these are referred to as vagrancies (流浪 ), says Casey
Youngflesh, an associate professor at Clemson University.
Living in the coldest place on Earth, emperor penguins, which can grow up to 45 inches tall
and live between 15 and 20 years, typically live in groups with populations that can range from a
few hundred to thousands of members. But even large population isn’t a guarantee of survival, and
penguins survived due to several unique adaptations.
Thick feathers protect penguins from Antarctica’s cold temperatures and high winds, and
substantial (大量的) fat stores allow them to survive with little or no food for long periods. These
animals are also remarkable swimmers, capable of diving to depths of over 450 meters. These
characteristics could certainly have helped this male penguin make the journey to Australia, says
Youngflesh.
Determining what exactly caused the penguin to end up in Australia is another matter, as
some experts suggest that he could have been blown off course by a storm and gotten lost or had
some of its other navigational senses disturbed in some way.
Despite how infrequently penguins land on Australia, Gus’s case may indicate how quickly
the Antarctic environment is changing and how local species are affected. Emperor penguins, for
example, depend on stable sea ice to reproduce, but as climate change increasingly causes ice
shelves to melt, the species is expected to undergo rapid population decline in the next few
decades. Vast environmental changes and less food sources mean that some animals must search
farther for food and shelter than they otherwise would. To that end, while this unusual event isn’t

currently indication of a larger pattern, experts should take note as animal vagrancy can expand in
the future, says Youngflesh.

Taking at least twenty minutes out of your day to walk or sit in a place that makes you feel in
contact with nature will significantly lower your stress hormone levels. That's the finding of a
study that has established for the first time the most effective amount of an urban nature
experience. Healthcare professionals can use this discovery to prescribe (开药) “nature-pills" in
the knowledge that they have a real measurable effect
"We know that spending time in nature reduces stress, but until now it was unclear how much
is enough, how often to do it, or even what kind of nature experience will benefit us,” says Dr.
Hunter, a lead author of this research. “Our study shows that for the greatest payoff, in terms of
efficiently lowering levels of the stress hormone, you should spend 20 to 30 minutes sitting or
walking in a place that provides you with a sense of nature.
To assist healthcare professionals looking for evidence-based guidelines on what exactly to
distribute, Hunter and her colleagues designed an experiment that would give a realistic estimate
of an effective amount.
Over an 8-week period, participants were asked to take a nature pill with a duration of 10
minutes or more, at least 3 times a week. Levels of stress hormone, were measured from saliva (唾
液)samples taken before and after a nature pill, once every two weeks. The data revealed that just
a twenty-minute nature experience was enough to significantly reduce stress levels.
Healthcare professionals can use our results as an evidence-based rule of thumb on what to
put in a nature-pill prescription," said Hunter. "It provides the first estimates of how na- ture
experiences impact stress levels in the context of normal daily life. It breaks new ground by
addressing some of the complexities of measuring an effective nature amount."

I took my sister home and continued my search alone. Carrying the signs made by my mother,
I kept posting them. In the meantime, whenever there were people passing by, I would ask if they

made me feel good. The secret was the quality of the food and how well the food was prepared. I
made an effort to find good restaurants as well as nice dishes.
A: How did you manage to make a list of 218 favorite restaurants
B: I’ve lived in many cities and when I moved back to Sweden from the United States, people
asked me where to go and eat when they went to cities I knew. I got a lot of ideas. Then I wrote
about restaurants for the Swedish club magazine and someone suggested I gather the information
about the restaurants together since I had all the facts about the restaurants I’ve been to. I started
to do that.
A: How do you find restaurants
B: The best way is to ask the people there. I may talk to the people at the street market or take a
walk and look for a place for myself. I never asked a hotel clerk or a taxi driver. I don’t go empty
restaurants or places with menus too difficult to understand.

M: At the beginning of the tour, we’ll start with the most important place in my town, which
is the Plaza Leon. The Plaza Leon, which is more than 100 years old, is a gathering place for
young people on Friday and Saturday nights, and for parents and children on Sunday afternoons.
Four streets lead to the Plaza, which have white sidewalks and treeline. Hernandes Street, which
was named after a famous writer born in the city, contains all of the food stores, fish markets and
vegetable stands. Femando Street, which was named after an educator, is where all of the
government offices are housed. Via del Mar Street, whose roads are made of stones, is the only
street which still has its old surface. Finally we come to Horatio Street on which there are two
universities, one of them is the most famous university in my country. That’s why it’s my favorite
street of all.
