Can animals predict earthquakes and other natural disasters Many people think so. Is there any real science behind this idea
As far back as 2,300 years ago, the ancient Greeks noticed that mice and snakes would behave strangely days before a big earthquake. However, there isn't enough scientific proof(证明) that animals can predict earthquakes.
When an earthquake happens, it makes two kinds of energy waves. The smaller one is called a Primary Wave or the "P wave". It arrives a couple of minutes before the larger Secondary Wave,or the “S wave”. The“P wave” travels faster because it can go through solids(固体),liquids(液体)and gases, but the "S wave"can only go through solids. Very few people notice the "P wave",but animals often can, because they have amazing senses.
With their super sense of smell, some wild animals can sense when a fire is burning nearby. But they have no idea when and where fires will start ahead of time. Today, global warming makes wildfires more common. So it is harder than ever for animals to survive these disasters.
答)
A new study shows that some birds may be able to sense storms much earlier than humans. The researchers studied a kind of songbird. In some years, these birds started migrating (迁徙) months earlier than usual. They always migrate during storm seasons. The researchers thought of the birds' unusual behaviour as a predictor of storms. But we need more research to prove this.
( )46. What is the difference between the "P wave" and the "S wave"
A. The "P wave"is larger than the "S wave".
B. The"S wave"can only go through liquids.
C. The "S wave" travels faster than the "P wave".
D. The“P wave” can go through more materials(材料).
( )47. What causes more animals to lose their lives in wildfires nowadays

B. Animals can't find enough water or food.
C. Animals fail to notice danger ahead of time.
D. Global warming makes wildfires happen more often.

A. They may be able to predict storms.
B. They may be able to predict wildfires.
C. They may be able to predict earthquakes.
D. They may be able to predict global warming.
( )49. What can we know from the passage
A. Animals are smarter than humans.
B. Humans should never listen to animals' warnings.
C. Animals can always predict different kinds of disasters.
D. There is not enough scientific proof that animals can predict disasters.
( )50. What is the passage mainly about
A. Some stories about animals.
B. What animals do during earthquakes.

There are lots of natural disasters every year. Typhoons are among them. Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean ( and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move high up into the sky.
Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles and it keeps moving higher in the sky.The warmer the air gets, the faster the wind moves. And when wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins. A typhoon has two parts. One is called the "eye". It's the centre of the typhoon. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye.
Typhoons are very dangerous. What should we do when a typhoon attacks
·Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.
·Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your cars!
·Listen to the radio, watch TV or search on the internet for important information.
·If you're told to go to a safer place, do it right now.

How to Protect Ourselves During Earthquakes
Many earthquakes happen every year. As students,we should learn some ways to protect ourselves during earthquakes.
If we are indoors, the safest place is under a strong table or a desk. Use your hands and arms to protect your head. Also, keep away from windows and stay close to a wall, as it's safer than standing in the middle of the room.
When we are outdoors, we must stay away from tall buildings and tall trees. They might fall down and hurt us.
If we are in the ruins after an earthquake, don't be nervous! Remember, staying calm is the key. Shout loudly for help-others will hear you and come to save you.
These are some useful ways to protect ourselves during earthquakes. I hope they can help you.
