When we use these words as subjects, we should pay attention to the meaning of the words.
people, cattle, staff (全体员工), military, vermin, poultry (家禽), ...
e.g. Such vermin as bugs and rats are hard to get rid of.
equipment, machinery, foliage, furniture, luggage, baggage, traffic, scenery, food, fruit, clothing, poetry (诗集), life(生物), ...
e.g. All life on our planet depends, in one way or another, upon the sun.
enemy, government, audience, class, public(公众), committee, family, crew (全体船员或机组人员), team, group, population,...
e.g. My family is not large, but my family are all music lovers.

Subject-verb agreement
When we use phrases as subjects, we also need to pay attention to the meaning of the phrases.
