How much do you know about Victor Hugo
Pre-reading
Now read the short introduction to Victor Hugo and answer the question.
1. Why do you think Victor Hugo is known as the “Shakespeare of France”
Hugo has been called the Shakespeare of France because he was the great French romantic writer, the leader of the romantic literary movement in the 19th century, and the representative of humanism.
2. What do you know about Romanticism
Romanticism: a style in the 1800s that emphasized a free form of writing and expressed strong emotions, experiences of common people, and imaginative expressions and passion.
In 1831 Hugo published his novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. It is now considered a key work of Romanticism.
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) is Hugo’s first major romantic novel. With sudden change and contrast, it is a tale set in 15th-century France: Crod, the archdeacon(副主教) of Notre Dame, is a virtuous, snide man who loves before he hates the gypsy girl Esmeralda.Ugly face, kind-hearted bell ringer Quasimodo to save the girl gave his life.
The novel revealed the fake feelings of religion, praised the kindness, friendship and self-sacrifice of the lower working people, and reflected Hugo’s humanitarian thought.
