An English woman has found her calling and recycled more than 2,000 pounds of trash after setting up a drop-off point in her garden for people to leave items that garbagemen don’t collect.
Liz Pinfield-Wells built the DIY recycling center following the birth of her third child after she learned she couldn’t recycle his baby food pouches(小袋子).Along with the pouches, certain food packaging, and even toothbrushes were all excluded (排除) from her town’s curbside (路边的) recycling service.
Inspired to take action she set up a drop-off point at the end of her driveway and encouraged the public to leave their mixed recycled items.Since starting her green project four years ago,Liz has recycled 2,600 pounds of trash split (分) between 30 different categories of recyclable waste that’s not taken by trash collection and raised thousands for her local community in the process.
Every month, she sends off the trash to TerraCycle,a firm that makes it into other items such as watering cans and benches. The weight of the junk is then converted (转变) into points for money which can be paid out twice a year to a charity or sports organization of her choice. In the last three years,Liz has raised more than £1,000 which she has donated to her 14-year-old daughter Zoe’s gymnastic group to buy new equipment. She has also donated a sum of money to another local charity to buy woodchips for their community garden.
“It can sometimes seem a little intimidating choosing where to start with recycling but with every small step,it gets that little bit easier,”she said.“I definitely think it has helped to raise awareness among my children about the need to recycle more too.”
24.What inspired Liz to set up a recycling center
A.Her child’s request.
B.Her neighbors’ proposals.
C.Her learning some trash was unrecyclable.
D.Her experience of working on a green project.
25.What did Liz do with the trash

The loud continuous noise of the cars or the sound of a plane can force its way into the deepest forest, yet it’s not only humans that are bothered by the noise.
Bioacoustician Bernie Krause has been studying the effect of noise pollution on wildlife, and has come across some interesting behaviors, especially among animals that communicate by vocalization(发声),like humans.Birds use sound to communicate, but in noisy places, these animals have to shout over the natural noise to be heard.
Krause mentions a study of nightingales to clarify what he means. The birds responded to traffic noise by singing louder and louder until they actually went beyond noise pollution standards in the city.To belt out their songs, they increased their lung pressure fivefold, but scientists state that this is not dangerous for the birds themselves.
Studies show that sudden noise can cause certain birds to leave their nests, exposing the young to their enemies. One study also showed that songbirds that nested closer to busy motorways were much less productive than those that nested farther away.Mammals(哺乳动物)too are affected.A recent study showed that nursing caribou respond to plane noise by not producing enough milk to feed their young.
In some cases noise pollution can actually help some animals while harming others.Toads and frogs are known to vocalize in synchrony so that no predator can zero in on them.Krause found that when planes flew overhead and masked the toads’ songs, they lost their synchronicity, and it took them 45 minutes to get it back again. That gave Great Horned Owls and coyotes plenty of time to find individual toads by sound.
According to Krause,“Not only will noise pollution bother wildlife, but it won’t help our lives either.”
28.How did nightingales react to traffic noise
A.By synchronizing their singing. B.By producing louder sounds.
C.By harming themselves. D.By leaving their nests.
29.How do young caribou suffer from aircraft noise
A.They receive less food. B.They can’t sleep at night.
C.They are often displaced. D.They can’t hear their mothers.
30.What would happen if toads and frogs failed to sing in union
A.They might become defenceless.
B.They would stop communicating.
C.They would soon regain their rhythm.
D.They might be unable to hunt in groups.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.Animals’ reaction to noises.
B.The causes of noise pollution.
C.The effects of noise pollution on wildlife.
D.The ways animals communicate with each other.

Plastic baby bottles released microplastics when heated.Should you be worried about its side-effects We still don’t have enough evidence of health risks posed by microplastic consumptions by infants or adults.
“The last thing we want to do is unduly alarming parents,” said John Boland,a professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and one of the authors of the Nature Food study. While the health effects of microplastics are still unknown, parents can significantly reduce their infants’ exposure by adding some steps to their bottle preparation routine,Boland said.He recommended letting plastic bottles cool completely after sterilization (消毒) in hot water, then washing them out at least three times with water that’s been allowed to cool to room temperature after being sterilized by boiling.Researchers here also found that plastic teakettles, plastic instant noodle cups and plastic food storage containers all released similarly high levels of microplastics when subjected to heat.
As for what those microplastics may be doing in our bodies, the evidence so far is quite limited and unclear.Schwabl, another professor, pointed to a need for more research into microplastics released from plastic food storage containers, especially when they are subjected to higher temperatures. He noted some research has found microplastics can cause inflammation (发炎) in the organs, while other studies show they do not harm.“The threshold at which they cause problems has not been determined for humans,”Schwabl said. For now,Schwabl agrees we shouldn’t panic. He’s avoiding plastic containers in his daily life—“not so much that I am afraid of the ingestion, but I think thereby I may be contributing to reducing the amount of plastic waste”that makes its way into the environment.
At the moment, there is no need to be afraid, but it is an open question and definitely an unmet need.
32.Which factor counts in the release of microplastics
A.Temperature. B.Products.
C.Time. D.Containers.
33.Which of the following words can replace the underlined part in Paragraph 2
A.Properly. B.Extremely.
C.Obviously. D.Specially.
34.What’s Schwabl’s attitude towards microplastics
A.Panicky. B.Concerned.
C.Indifferent. D.Critical.
35.How is the passage developed
A.By providing the examples. B.By reasoning with the readers.
C.By analyzing the figures. D.By comparing the findings.

“Our class recycling project will start next week. You can choose to do it alone or in pairs,” Mr.Lee,the science teacher, announced.“Your goal is to design a recycling corner that will increase recycling rates in our classroom. The best idea will be adopted in the school.” The classroom erupted into enthusiastic chatter as students paired up and began their discussions.
Being a nature and animal lover,Lucy has a big dream. She imagined birds and fish thriving (茁壮成长) in a plastic-free environment, inspired by her hours spent observing wildlife at her favorite lake.“The first step towards a plastic-free habitat is fostering a recycling habit,” she thought.“I’m sure I can come up with a brilliant idea for the project!” Her daydreaming was interrupted by a light tap from her best friend,Max.
“Do you still have that book on recycling I’m sure there are many helpful tips that we could use for this project.Shall we work on this together ” Max inquired expectantly.
Lucy recalled having read the library book the previous night and placing it on her bedside table.“Um...” she hesitated,“I returned it this morning...and I’m thinking of working on this project alone.”
“Oh,I see,” Max walked away,disappointed.
The next day,Lucy started working on her project,a smart dustbin.Yes,she had a unique concept for the recycling bin but she struggled to construct it.The design required a standard of workmanship that was simply beyond her capability.Frustrated, she went for a walk downstairs.
“Lucy ” she heard a familiar voice and looked up,surprised to find Max standing there. He had never witnessed her looking so disheartened before;she was walking heavily along with a discouraged expression, sighing deeply.Concerned,he called out to her.“What happened ” he asked gently.Guilt-ridden,she admitted lying about the book and apologized sincerely.Max forgave her readily.
“Well,if you need a partner, all you have to do is ask!” Max replied, smiling.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

In Hebei Province lies a vast forest. This Green Great Wall reduces sandstorms greatly. But more than half a century ago,it was nothing but wildness. Thanks to a tree, called “a tree of merit”,we have this Green Great Wall today.Half a century ago, there was only one tree in this desert.Without it,there would have been no Saihanba.Saihanba is a combination of Chinese and Mongolian, meaning “beautiful highlands”.(17) Until the Qing Dynasty,it was a royal hunting land because of its cool weather in summer.However,(18) the area turned into a desert by the end of the Qing Dynasty due to forest fires, deforestation and constant wars.Over 350 foresters were first sent to this area to fight with the desert as early as the 1960s.Their duty was to rebuild a forest in Saihanba, but nobody knew if the goal was realistic.(19) It was not until they found a 200-year-old tree swaying alone in the wind that their hope was raised. If one tree can survive here,so can millions of trees. After decades of hard work, the wasteland is now a vast forest covering about 93,000 hectares.(20)In 2017,the foresters working the land received a UN environment award for their great contributions to a greener world.

She did so,and then excitedly described her design concept of the recycling bin.“Cool!” Max chirped.Fired up by her brilliant idea, they worked hard together, making spots for paper, plastic, glass, and metal.Over the week, the pair worked tirelessly to build their recycling bin. They included sections for different types of materials and added sensors that would light up when an item was correctly sorted. But if a mistake was made,it flashed red,and a nice robot voice would show the way. They even decorated it with colorful pictures of a clean world without trash, where animals could play.
Lucy and Max’s hard work paid off.Their recycling bin wasn’t just a bin;it was a beacon of hope,a call to action, and a testament to partnership and deep love for the planet. On the presentation day, their classmates were in awe of their clever design and powerful message. So impressed was Mr.Lee that he advocated for its school-wide adoption.Overjoyed by the positive response,Lucy and Max realized that real change required collective efforts, and their bin stood as tangible evidence that teamwork truly makes the dream work.
