It was the sound of a fist on the body of Tony Bullimore’s overturned yacht(帆船)that told him he was not going to die.
The British yachtsman had spent four days and four nights inside his overturned yacht, hoping that he would be saved.Mr Bullimore had been stranded(搁浅)more than 1,500 miles from the Australian coast and 900 miles from Antarctica.
He described the horrific conditions that he had experienced.“Two-thirds of the yacht filled with water. There was a hole in the bottom of the yacht,in fact really at the top.I had to find myself a spot as high up as possible and put nets around it so that I could stay in there to get out of the water and to get away from everything.”
Faced with the danger of being dragged(拖)down with the boat, most people would have jumped clear.Mr Bullimore’s sense of calm, developed from years of yachting, taught him otherwise. He stayed with the yacht.
Once he had decided to stay with the yacht,Mr Bullimore’s priorities were to activate the distress beacon transmitter(遇险信标发射机).The yachtsman said that during the“horrific experience”he was “hanging on in there and believing something would happen and just fighting.”
Through four days of solitude(独处),he depended on “strong determination,a little water,a little chocolate” to sustain him.But even Mr Bullimore was at his endurance limit.“When I knew that the rescue was actually going to happen,I felt ecstatic,” he said.

With increasing exposure to information through technology, our students are becoming less active and do not develop relationships with self, others and the environment.Outdoor Education does not only promote physical development in students but it also focuses on each of their personal, social and self-awareness development.
That is what the Outdoor Education Programme(OEP)at Marymount Convent School aims to do.The highlight of Marymount’s OEP is the adventure camp that helps students to grow in perseverance and courage as they tackle challenges. The adventure camp provides an opportunity for the students to learn more about basic survival skills, respect and responsibility for self, others and environmental awareness.
For the energetic ones, like Sofia-Jane Wong Enqi, the activities in OEP are a dream come true. She loves activities such as trekking(远足)and team-building activities.During trekking, the primary 6 student learnt the value of cooperation instead of competition. She discovered how easy it was for her and her teammates to complete challenges when people were not fighting to take the lead but instead stopping and listening to each other.
Another primary 6 student,Mithra Anandan, got an even greater benefit while hiking. She had never been very interested in physical activities but as she joined her friends on a hike, she learnt to persevere despite having to stop for breaks.Working hard to reach the end of the hike taught her the value of resilience(适应力)even if others can go farther or faster. It is not about a race;it is about completing and enjoying a journey.
Their parents also observed clear improvements in their children’s self-management and responsibility.“My parents praised me for my positive change in character and of course,I had burnt a good amount of calories!”says Mithra laughingly.Sofia-Jane adds,“Days after I returned from the camp,my mom said that I became more independent, cleaning up after my meals and doing my homework without being reminded.”

After years of observing human nature,I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent.I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more than ambition.Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground.Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent,“Why Why Why ”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius (孟子),“is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it.We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner,to avoid foolish leaps into the dark,to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them,we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly,so as not to become discouraged.I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it.Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability Most people don’t;there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done.Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now,for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
32.In writing Paragraph 1,the author aims to .
A.propose a definition B.make a comparison
C.reach a conclusion D.present an argument
33.What does the example of Galileo tell us
A.Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.
B.Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C.Creativity results from challenging authority.
D.Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
34.What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7
A.Gaining success helps you become an expert.
B.The genius tends to get things done creatively.
C.Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
D.You should remain modest when approaching perfection.
35.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Curious Minds Never Feel Contented
B.Reflections on Human Nature
C.The Keys to Achievement
D.Never Too Late to Learn

Many successful people would likely say they gained essential character traits(品质)as a result of a particular challenge, which ultimately aided them in their success.Their individual stories can be an inspiration for all those dealing with obstacles(阻碍).Take a look at the three strategies below that successful people have used to overcome physical, mental, and financial obstacles.

Set goals
Try using the S.M.A.R.T.(smart,measurable,attainable,realistic,and timely)method to set achievable yet still challenging goals. 39 .Successful people have an end in sight and they work hard to get there.Actor Jim Carrey, who had to overcome dyslexia(诵读困难),wrote himself a check for $10 million for acting, dating it for ten years in the future. 40 .

I used to be a lonely girl sitting at the back of the classroom.Having failed the college entrance exams and changed schools twice,I seldom smiled.Every day I would sit at the desk, staring into textbooks and exercises, motionless and heavy-hearted.However,my classmates were in a different picture. They were playing, laughing and chatting delightedly.Besides,I hated it when they were always answering the teachers’ questions loudly and confidently.Obviously,I had no friends in this fiercely competitive class.
Life is harder for senior students.Hardly does a day go by without exercises or tests.Every time when the scores came out mine wouldn’t be the first or second but last.I was especially tired of the endless exercises and exams, which I seemingly would never do well in.I was under a lot of pressure, feeling like a fish being fried in a pan.
Hanging over me was a dark cloud. The only dim light came from Mr.Smith.Every time I stepped into the classroom,he welcomed me with a warm smile;every time my gaze began to wander over the classroom or stare out of the window, his caring eyes would draw me back to his class.Besides,he was the only teacher who invited me to the office, talking about my studies and scores.I remembered when I came out of his office,I felt refreshed believing that I could work harder.
I was feeling everything was changing for the better.I prepared hard for the final exam of the first semester, desiring to prove that I was not the last one.So before Mr.Smith told us the test result,I was expecting something good in store for me.
But I was still the last one in the class.A burst of sadness and shame consuming me,I was heartbroken.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

  Finally,the college admission letter came.

33.What does the example of Galileo tell us
A.Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.
B.Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C.Creativity results from challenging authority.
D.Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
答案 D [推理判断题。通读第二段的内容,尤其是该段最后一句“Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent,‘Why Why Why ’”可知,本段主要论述了人类内心深处的驱策力比雄心更重要,像伽利略一样,历史上所有的伟人都是由于对事物感到好奇,并且不断发问,去探索,才有所成就。从伽利略的例子可知,伟大是来自对于探索持久的渴望,故选D项。]

A.Gaining success helps you become an expert.
B.The genius tends to get things done creatively.
C.Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
D.You should remain modest when approaching perfection.
35.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Curious Minds Never Feel Contented
B.Reflections on Human Nature
C.The Keys to Achievement
D.Never Too Late to Learn
答案 C [标题归纳题。通读全文可知,本文主要通过举例来论述有伟大成就的人通常都拥有好奇和不满足的品质,并鼓励人们唤醒自己的好奇心去取得一番成就;再结合文章第一段中的“I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance:curiosity and discontent.”可知,作者认为好奇心和不满足决定了有成就的人和平庸的人的区别,并以此展开论述,提出建议并鼓励人们取得成就,故C项(取得成就的关键)最适合作本文的标题。]

 36
This is probably the one common characteristic of all successful people and it is an especially important trait for anyone struggling with a challenge. 37 .It is said that Edison tried thousands of ways to develop the electric light bulb(电灯泡) until he finally succeeded.“Why,I have not failed,”he once said.“I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Don’t make comparisons
38 .However, such comparisons can be self-defeating.If you have a child who tends to compare himself negatively to his peers(同龄人),encourage him to celebrate what makes him different.Avoid evaluating skills based on comparisons with others. As Steve Jobs once said,“Your time is limited,so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

40.G [设空处与上一句为解释说明关系。根据该空上一句“Actor Jim Carrey,who had to overcome dyslexia,wrote himself a check for $10 million for acting,dating it for ten years in the future.”

The Double Nature of Courage:
Speaking Up and Listening
The quote from Churchill,“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak;courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” summarizes the deep nature of courage.
It highlights that true bravery lies in both expressing our own thoughts and being open to the viewpoints of others. It takes strength to voice our beliefs, but it also requires courage to actively listen to diverse opinions.By acknowledging the importance of both speaking and listening, this quote reminds us that courage is vital in promoting open dialogue, understanding, and growth in our personal and collective journeys.

Right at that moment,Mr.Smith invited me to his office.

  Finally,the college admission letter came.

Right at that moment,Mr.Smith invited me to his office.Hesitantly,I walked into the office.Mr.Smith greeted me with a smile. As he began talking, not about my grades or mistakes, but about my potential and perseverance,it became apparent that this talk was totally a different one.He didn’t blame me.Instead,he praised my determination. He encouraged me to embrace my struggles, reminding me that success was never a straight path.In his eyes,I could see his belief in me,and I knew I should never quit.
Finally, the college admission letter came. I held it in my shaking hands, doubting whether I was in a world of fantasy. But as I opened the envelope,I couldn’t believe my eyes.Despite all the odds,I got admitted! I stared at the letter in disbelief for a long time.It felt like the dawn after a seemingly endless night,a reward for the perseverance I didn’t know I had until Mr.Smith showed me.Tears welling up in my eyes,Mr.Smith might never know how much his encouragement might mean to me in my toughest time.
