On a busy afternoon in Hong Kong’s city center, a group of yellow-crested cockatoos (小葵花凤头鹦鹉) fly
past tall buildings. These birds are in great danger. Yet, here they are, living in a big city.
These cockatoos firstly came from Indonesia. They were brought to Hong Kong as pets long ago. Some flew
away from home or were set free. Surprisingly, they learned to live in the city’s parks, eating fruits and seeds.
Today, Hong Kong has about 200 wild yellow-crested cockatoos. That is around 10% of all such cockatoos in
the world. They can live here because the city has many parks with trees, and because the birds are smart and can
live for 40 to 60 years. They learn from each other how to live in the city.
A scientist named Astrid Andersson studies these birds. She says Hong Kong’s cockatoos are very important.
They show that people and wildlife can live together in a city. They also help keep the birds’ genes (基因) diverse,
which is good for their future living.
