In a recent Instagram post, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said people
often ask how often he eats at fast-food chains. “I eat there a lot — three or four
times a week,” he shared. “Sometimes it’s breakfast, sometimes lunch. That’s one of
the job’s advantages: I get to eat at McDonald’s often.”
Many other restaurant CEOs also share their favorite foods from their own
chains. Before becoming Starbucks’ CEO, Brian Niccol loved Chipotle’s chicken
roll bowl — with white rice, fresh mixed vegetables, cheese, plus soft green fruit. “It’
s more than I should eat at my age, but it’s hard to resist,” he told Fortune last year.
And Red Lobster CEO Damola Adamolekun also shared his favorite menu item at
the seafood chain. It used to be snow crab (蟹), but it has changed to the Bairdi crab.
“I tried the dish recently, which is similar to snow crab, and that is my new favorite,”
he told the Wall Street Journal last year.
Meanwhile, Kempczinski is dealing with a tricky restaurant landscape as rising
prices remain sticky while customers continue to look to McDonald’s for affordable
food. Earlier this year, the company cut prices on its set meals after many customers
complained that they had gotten too expensive. Kempczinski acknowledged the
issue, saying in an earnings report that “you’re seeing set meals priced over $10, and
that absolutely is hurting its value impression”.
Consumers are also increasingly divided. Lower-income diners are cutting back,
treating fast food less as a daily convenience and more as an occasional pleasure.
“Particularly with middle-and-lower-income consumers, they’re feeling under a lot
of pressure right now,” Kempczinski added. “There’s a lot of talk around, ‘What’s
the present state of the economy How’s it doing right now ’ And what we see is, it’
s really kind of a two-part economy. If you’re upper-income, earning over
$100,000, things are good. What we see with middle-and-lower-income
consumers, it’s actually a different story.”
24.What could be an advantage of Kempczinski’s job
A. Free-of-charge McDonald’s meals. B. Frequently eating McDonald’s meals.
C. Trying new products earlier. D. Choosing meal time freely.
25.What’s the reason for McDonald’s price cuts
A. Its meal prices were too high. B. Its CEO required price reduction.
C. It lost many regular customers. D. It received customer complaints.
26.What may make middle-and-lower-income people stressed
A. Unstable daily food prices. B. The current economic state.
C. Low salaries of fast-food fields. D. Changeable working environment.
27.What will the author talk about next
A. McDonald’s new desserts. B. Red Lobster’s crab dishes
C. Fast-food brand price wars. D. Fast-food trends nowadays.

While the rest of the world is fast asleep, Ethan Page is wide awake. He is busy
in a shipping container, not sailing but planting.
Ethan, an agricultural instructor in Central Wyoming College (CWC) , became
interested in agriculture at a young age. Growing up in Wyoming, which has 80 food
deserts across 21 counties, he saw residents in his neighbourhood struggling to gain
fresh produce. “I have always been involved with agriculture and education. I
wanted to find an opportunity that would put together all of my skills to solve the
pressing issue of Wyoming,” says Ethan. He, together with a group of students from
CWC, takes agricultural innovation to the next level — by transforming a standard
8-by-40-foot shipping container into a climate-controlled greenhouse.
The greenhouse is a fully operational vertical ( 垂 直 的 ) growing system.
From the beginning, the container is recycled. The former shipping container is now
given a new life as a food-growing station. Inside the repurposed container, four
sliding walls with 88 growing panels housing five growth channels each, are
growing hundreds of plants vertically. A fully automated (自动的) computer system
is looking after every plant’s needs, deciding when it’s time to turn on the bright
LED sunshine each day, as well as delivering the right amount of water.
The setup allows students to grow delicious vegetables and herbs, with the
entire system designed for minimal energy usage and maximum plant output. It even
operates mainly at night to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, a wise
decision that saves money.
“Now we are able to offer fresh vegetables to locals year-round,” says Ethan.
“The project also enriches the students’ experience.” A CWC student, Lexi Torres,
speaks to shipping company Container Lift, “This project is about empowering
next-generation growers to put real-world challenges like climate change and food
shortage into studies. We’re learning how to feed people with fewer resources. That’
s the future.”
28.Why did Ethan repurpose a shipping container
A. To reduce food deserts. B. To achieve childhood dream.
C. To reduce regional poverty. D. To promote modern agriculture.
29.Which of the following best describe the Greenhouse
A. Modern and expensive. B. Futuristic and fancy.
C. Fruitful and troublesome. D. Eco-friendly and high-tech.
30. What key factor is considered for night operation of the greenhouse
A. Output. B. Cost. C. Function. D. Effectiveness.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Ethan brought agricultural problems under the spotlight.
B. Ethan replaced traditional farming with vertical farming.
C. The project has solved environmental matters in the area.
D. The project plants seeds that go far beyond the greenhouse.

In a new study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology,
researchers from the Universities of Bath and Southampton have found how just 10
minutes of daily mindfulness (正念) practice can improve wellbeing(健康), ease
depression and anxiety and help people to be more motivated to improve their
lifestyle — including healthier exercise, eating and sleeping habits.
The research gathered 1,247 adults from 91 countries and used a free mobile
app called Medito to deliver brief daily mindfulness sessions. Participants were
randomly allocated(随机分组 ) to either a month-long mindfulness routine or a
control group that listened to excerpts (节选 ) from “Alice in Wonderland”. The
mindfulness sessions included relaxation exercises, intention-setting, body scans,
breath-focused attention and self-reflection. Surveys ( 调查) conducted before
and after the 30-day training period showed great improvements in the
mindfulness group:
Reduced Depression by 19.2% more than control group;
Improved Wellbeing by 6.9% more;
Decreased Anxiety by 12.6% more;
Attitudes to Health got more positive by 7.1% over control group;
Behavioural Intentions to look after health increased by 6.5% beyond control
group.
These benefits were largely maintained after 30 days. In follow-up surveys one
month later(Day 61), the mindfulness group showed long-term improvements in
their wellbeing, especially a reduction in depression, more positive attitudes and
even better sleep.
This research is among the first to link mindfulness practice to broader lifestyle
changes, underscoring its possibility for promoting healthier living habits like
exercising regularly. Masha Remskar, the lead researcher and an expert in behavior
change, emphasized that even short daily mindfulness practice can be a powerful
tool for mental health improvement. Dr. Max Western from the University of Bath
stressed the potential global impact of a light-touch, affordable mindfulness
intervention (介入) on healthy lifestyle behaviors, noting its benefits still lasted
after the course ended, indicating that it can help build sustainable habits.
The study was supported by the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council
and worked with the Medito Foundation, a non-profit promoting mindfulness
globally through a free app choice to subscription based services. Medito paved the
way for the “30 Day Challenge”, but had no part in data collection, analysis or
publication.
32.What can be inferred about daily mindfulness
A. It can cure depression and anxiety.
B. It may lead to sustainable benefits.
C. Its benefits are limited to stress reduction
D. It is especially effective for serious depression.
33.What does the underlined word “underscoring” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Highlighting. B. Ignoring. C. Doubting. D. Transforming.
34.What does the Medito Foundation do in the study
A. Fund the research and collect data.
B. Analyse the data and release results.
C. Make profits and monitor the process.
D. Promote the study and spread mindfulness.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Medito App: Promoting Mindfulness Practice
B. Brief Daily Mindfulness: Big Benefits for Wellbeing
C. Mindfulness vs. Control Group: A Comparative Study
D. Recent Research in Health Psychology: Mindfulness Edition

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分 20分)
One late afternoon, Tina was driving on a highway when a severe(严重的)
snowstorm hit without warning before. In a short time, the heavy snow, coupled with the
strong wind, turned everything into white and made the road extremely dangerous.
Tina later found out that this kind of storm is called a “Saskatchewan screamer”,
which comes on extremely fast with high winds. It’s really frightening and deadly to be
caught in such extreme weather.
Unable to see the road clearly, Tina had to stop her car and call 911. The operator
(接线员) told her that phone calls for help kept flooding in and all the rescuers(救援
人员) had been called out. She suggested that Tina should wait out the storm in her car
rather than risk driving on or going out. She took Tina’s information and told her that an
officer would call her back. Tina waited anxiously for almost two hours, but nobody
called her yet to check in. “The storm showed no sign of stopping. What was worse, it
was getting dark. I couldn’t see anything outside the car since the snow had covered all
the windows. The wind was still howling and the temperature was getting lower and
lower in the car. I had no idea whom I could turn to for help,” Tina later wrote in a
Facebook post. “Alone and cold, I began to panic, worrying about getting hit by an
oncoming car, getting buried in a snowbank, having my tailpipe(排气管) blocked by
the snow... I was really worried I couldn’t ever make it home to my family."
That was when Tina realized that it was no use waiting passively for help. She
decided to do something herself. So she took out her cellphone, logged on to the Google
Map and determined her location. She found online a neighborhood Facebook group for
the area that she was passing through and shared a comment about her trouble with her
location marked on the map. Then all she could do next was sitting in the car, praying
someone could make a response to her as early as possible.
Fortunately, Tina’s request reached 80-year-old retired rescuer Frank.
