Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city In order to answer this question,we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So,let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style.Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much,it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in,but the same can be said of some old buildings too.Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas.I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings,I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before,we would all still be living in caves. Thus,I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
24.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph
A.Some of them are not attractive.
B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
25.Which of the following is true according to the author
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
26.According to the last paragraph, the author probably wants the architect and planner to .
A.destroy old buildings
B.put things in a different place
C.respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
D.choose new architectural styles
27.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
C.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
D.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.

It’s a race against time, as generations of cultural heritage conservators at the Dunhuang Academy make a great effort to protect the artistic charm of the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, despite erosion(侵蚀) by sand and wind.
The team is committed to protecting the 45,000 square meters of murals(壁画) and more than 2,400 painted sculptures of the 735 caves of the site, the construction of which lasts about a thousand years, from the 4th century to the 14th century. The cultural relics are the product of the cultural exchanges that took place over centuries on the ancient Silk Road. “Our work, repairing murals and painted sculptures, is to better preserve the caves, which promotes the great Dunhuang spirit of inclusiveness to the world and inspires modern people,” says Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy.
Commonly seen “diseases” affecting the murals include cracking and chipping, as well as erosion that is caused by changes in temperature and moisture of the caves, and the settlings of salts. To restore a mural requires an all-rounder. Restorers should know painting, master the skills of craft and have some knowledge of chemistry and physics, to be able to recognize the problems and their corresponding causes and deliver a solution. They must also select proper materials and tools, and conduct experiments, before formally carrying out the restoration and evaluating the effect afterward.
The restoration should respect the original work and aim to maintain the current situation of the murals rather than repainting them. When the restorers find some parts of murals missing or fading away, they never repaint them to create a “perfect” appearance in restoration. “Cultural relics are witnesses of history,” explains Su. “When you pursue the so-called intact(完好无损) look for artistic reasons, you will lose their key meaning.”
Cave conservation is about continuously solving problems. “It needs a long-term research to better preserve the caves, over a much wider time span that goes beyond our lifetimes,” Su says. But at least, they can keep the current look of the murals for as long as possible.
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The popularity of Dunhuang murals.
B.The history of the ancient Silk Road.
C.The ways of protecting cultural heritage.
D.The significance of the restoration work.
29.How does the author feel the restoration work
A.Creative. B.Rewarding.
C.Interesting. D.Demanding.
30.What can we know about restoring murals from Su in paragraph 4
A.It is advised to keep its current state.
B.It is important to pursue its intact look.
C.Its missing parts should be fixed in time.
D.Restorers can repaint to perfect its appearance.
31.Which can be the best title for the text
A.The Significance of Mural Preservation
B.The Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese Culture
C.The Mural Restoration in the Mogao Caves
D.The Successful Experiment on Cave Conservation

WHY SHENNONGJIA
As we know, in 2016, Shennongjia made it on to the UNESCO World Heritage List. But there are so many important places not yet on this list. So you might ask: why Shennongjia
UNESCO awarded Shennongjia this status because it meets two criteria required by the list. It contains a naturally-balanced environment that allows the many and various species to live and prosper. It is also one of the rare locations in the world where scientists can observe in real time the ecological and biological processes that occur as the plants and animals develop and evolve.
For the first criterion, Shennongjia is apparently one of the most “complete” natural areas in the world. The region rises from about 400 metres to over 3,000 metres above sea level, giving it the name the “Roof of Central China”.
For the second criterion, we can see that Shennongjia has incredible biodiversity. Look at this slide. According to official statistics, over 3,000 plant species have been recorded there. This represents more than ten percent of China’s total floral richness.
It is a challenge to look after so many species. In winter, scientists brave heavy snow and freezing temperatures to supply food to the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. Thanks to their efforts, the monkey’s population has doubled since the 1980s.Their number reached over 1,300 in 2015 and continues to grow.
But the most impressive aspect of Shennongjia is the local people, who take things from nature without causing damage. I visited a local village which is known for its home-made honey. What is special about the honey is that it is produced by the earliest species of Chinese bee. All of this explains why Shennongjia earned—and deserves—its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as highlighting how understanding, awareness and hard work have contributed towards protecting a unique and wonderful part of our natural world.
32.Why is Shennongjia included in the UNESCO World Heritage List
A.Because its forests stretch on like great green seas.
B.Because it is the legendary father of Chinese herbal medicine.
C.Because it satisfies the two requirements for the status.
D.Because it has the mysterious creature called “Yeren”.
33.Shennongjia is also called the .
A.Roof of Central China
B.Roof of Northern China
C.Roof of Eastern China
D.Roof of Southern China
34.How does the author think of the scientists in Shennongjia
A.Patient. B.Careful.
C.Confident. D.Hard-working.
35.According to the passage, what impressed the author most
A.A local village. B.The local people.
C.Some special monkeys. D.The wild bees.

(2025·湖南长沙高二联考)
Being the youngest in my family has had its advantages, of course. But being the youngest also came with its fair share of troubles. I was often told what I couldn’t do and why. I knew that my family loved me. They always tried to protect me, help me and take care of me, but I couldn’t wait to show them I could do things by myself.
It was a hot day in Florida. The school year had just ended and it was time for summer vacation. We had just gotten a little black dog who we named One-Eyed.
Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: feed him, teach him tricks and take long walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this little active, playful new addition to our family. I was so desperate to pet One-Eyed myself, too. Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could do that, they would shout, “No!” or tell me that I had germs (细菌). Once, they even convinced me that I had so many germs and that if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them and was scared that something terrible would happen to the dog. Once I even confessed to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed. At first, my mom seemed very confused about what I was telling her, but then she realized that they were playing a joke on me to keep me away from the dog. My mom scolded my brother and sister, “You better stop teasing your little brother!” Little brother! That’s exactly what I was. That really got my blood boiling. The frustration built up inside me as I watched them enjoy their time with One-Eyed, excluding me from the joyous moments. I knew I was capable of taking care of myself and forming my own connection with our new furry friend. Determination filled my heart, fueling a newfound sense of independence.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
I took one look at the dog and decided that I would prove to everyone that I could pet and play with One-Eyed.

Seeing this, my brother and sister couldn’t believe their eyes.

Dear Chris,
Last Friday, our school held a cultural exchange activity with the theme of “Entering the Spring Festival and Appreciating the Charm of the Intangible Cultural Heritage”. The purpose of this activity was to help foreign exchange students have a deeper understanding of the Spring Festival, one of China’s intangible cultural heritages.
During the activity, we had various interesting and meaningful programs. We learned how to write Spring Festival couplets and make paper-cuttings. Some students even tried their hand at making traditional Chinese dumplings. We also watched some wonderful performances related to the Spring Festival.
I think such activities are very meaningful as they help spread our traditional culture and enhance cultural exchanges.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I took one look at the dog and decided that I would prove to everyone that I could pet and play with One-Eyed.

Seeing this, my brother and sister couldn’t believe their eyes.

I took one look at the dog and decided that I would prove to everyone that I could pet and play with One-Eyed. Determined, I approached One-Eyed slowly, extending my hand towards him. As I got closer, the dog wagged his tail and looked up at me, as if he knew I was about to do something brave. Taking a deep breath, I gently placed my hand on his furry head. The moment our skin touched, I felt an incredible rush of joy and excitement. One-Eyed didn’t seem bothered at all; in fact, he seemed to enjoy the attention. It was as if a bond had instantly formed between us.
Seeing this, my brother and sister couldn’t believe their eyes. Their jaws dropped in astonishment. “You did it!” my sister exclaimed. My brother, still in disbelief, stammered, “But...but we told you all those things!” I smiled triumphantly, realizing that I had proven them wrong. “You see,” I said confidently, “I am capable of doing things on my own. And just because I’m the youngest doesn’t mean I can’t take care of myself and be responsible.” Being the youngest had its challenges, but it also shaped me into the resilient, determined person I am today. And I will forever be grateful to One-Eyed for showing me that age and size don’t define one’s abilities.
