First Journey around Earth
It has been over 500 years since the first journey around the whole planet in 1522. Long before the invention of trains and planes, many thought it was impossible. It nearly was. The journey was started by Portuguese (葡萄牙的) sailor, Ferdinand Magellan, but he never saw it finished.
Magellan was following in the footsteps of explorers (探险家) like Christopher Columbus. He’d traveled from Spain to America in 1492 and encouraged others to take to the seas. But Magellan’s journey was even more daring. A journey around the whole world would show completely the still-questioned idea that the world was not flat, but round.
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain where he got support from the Spanish King, Charles V. But Spanish sailors didn’t like being led by a Portuguese man.
After fighting storms, losing ships and many of his men turning against (反对) him and returning home, Magellan was killed in the Philippines by local people.
After Magellan’s death, his group continued in the only ship that was left. Along the way, they traveled across a new ocean and mapped new paths for European trade. For better or worse, they had made the way for modern world trade. Sixty thousand miles later, and after the death of 80 percent of those who took part, the journey had shown that the world could be circled around.
The passage (航程) Magellan’s team went through, between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, was named after him: the Strait of Magellan. It is 570 kilometers long. His influence on the world did not end there. In 1989, NASA named a spacecraft (宇宙飞船) after the explorer and sent it to Venus (金星).

Are you curious about the future What do you think our life will be like in 50 years or more To answer this, you can read a sci-fi book. Perhaps you will have some ideas then. Today, many young readers are interested in science fiction. But what makes it so popular
For one thing, science fiction gives us a chance to imagine what our future will be like. Anything is possible. We can dream big. Some people think there will be flying cars and robot servants. Others believe we will learn more about strange aliens and other worlds.
Another reason is that sci-fi writers and their work can inspire us to create the future. In 1945, a sci-fi author named Arthur C. Clarke wrote about a system of space stations. In the article, he predicted the earth of the future would have many TV stations and people would send TV programmes around the world. However, this was before TV was a common item at home! In a short story by Clarke, he suggested people in the future would use a system to talk with others around the world. Amazingly, the short story was actually the inspiration for the internet!
Science fiction is also popular because it can make us think about our world in new ways. Although many sci-fi stories are set in imaginary worlds or societies, they can help us better understand the real world. They can also make us excited when we feel like we are living in a boring world.

“Flowers are like kindness,” Mom said. “Their beauty is meant to be shared.”
Early the next morning, Mom woke me up. We brought the baskets and stopped near the first house. I took one basket, set it by the doorstep and rang the bell. Then we quickly ran away, ducked behind the trees and waited.
Finally, the door opened. A man came out, looking surprised. He picked up the flower basket and then smiled. Mom hugged me. I got a good feeling inside. Now I knew what she meant about beauty sharing. I couldn’t wait to get to the next house.
