Sam loved animals, especially those living in the wild. One day, he went to listen to a wild animal lecture at the city library. The lecturer talked about how human activities often destroy the natural balance. “Many species are now in great danger,” the lecturer said sadly. “We must do something to protect them ___1___ disappearing forever.”
Sam was deeply moved. He decided to learn more. He found an audio book about the journey of an elephant family. The book described how they would rather go hungry than enter a village, because they feared humans. But their habitat was shrinking. They ___2___ lost over half of their living space in the last ten years alone. Before they started their long journey north, they ___3___ experienced a severe drought. The leading mother elephant remembered a river that ___4___ existed years ago. She hoped to find water for her family. The journey was long and full of dangers. They had to cross a highway, and one of the baby elephants was almost hit by a moving truck. ___5___, they managed to escape.
After listening to the book, Sam felt ___6___ responsible. “I can’t just sit here. I need to make a change. No one else will do it for us,” he thought.
The next weekend, instead of playing video games, Sam set up a small booth at a local park. He prepared some leaflets explaining the importance of protecting wild animals. He told passersby that cutting down forests ___7___ farming is a major threat. He also asked them to support an animal protection organization. “The world would be a much poorer place ___8___ these magnificent creatures are gone,” he said to a little girl. The girl listened ___9___, and her parents decided to make a donation. Sam felt a deep sense of ___10___ that day. He realized one person’s actions, however small, could make a difference.

Part 3 Reading (第三部分 阅读 共40分)
VI. 阅读理解 (40分)
A篇 (共6小题;每小题2分,满分12分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Whales are known as the largest animals living on the earth. A new study, however, has discovered a surprising fact about their eating habits. Scientists used to think that whales, like some sharks, are gentle giants that eat only when they find a big school of fish. But the research on baleen whales—which filter tiny creatures from the water—shows they eat much more than we estimated.
By using tracking devices and drones, researchers found that a single adult blue whale in the Antarctic waters eats about 16 tons of krill (磷虾) every day. That’s like eating one whole school bus full of food! Previously, scientists’ guesses were based on what was in the whales’ stomachs from dead whales. This was like looking at a person’s dinner plate after they ate and trying to figure out how many meals they had all week.
Why does this matter This discovery changes how we understand the ocean’s balance. If whales eat three times more than we thought, they also produce three times more waste. That waste is rich in iron, which feeds tiny plants at the ocean’s surface, which then absorb carbon dioxide. So, whales play a much bigger role in keeping the climate cool than we imagined. “Protecting these giants is not just about saving a species,” said one scientist. “It’s about protecting our planet’s health.”
1. What is the surprising discovery about whales mentioned in the text
A. They are the largest animals on earth.
B. They only eat when they find a big school of fish.

2. The underlined word “estimated” in paragraph 1 probably means “__________”.
A. guessed
B. hoped
C. worried

3. How does the writer explain the huge amount a blue whale eats in paragraph 2
A. By listing numbers and using a comparison.
B. By telling a story of a whale’s daily life.
C. By describing the taste of krill.
D. By quoting what a scientist said.
4. Why is the whale’s waste important for the environment
A. It is food for other big sea animals.
B. It helps tiny plants on the ocean surface grow.
C. It makes the ocean water very clean.
D. It is used to produce a new kind of energy.
5. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text
A. Scientists will stop studying whales now.
B. Whales only help keep the ocean’s balance, not the climate.
C. Protecting whales is very important for the whole planet.
D. Killing whales is a serious problem that is now under control.
6. Which of the following is the best title for the text

On the second day, we saw a group of elephants. They were crossing the dusty road. My little brother, Tom, was so excited. He ___1___ his field glasses to see them better. D篇 (共4小题;每小题1分,满分4分)
阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题。答案不超过6个词。
Recently, a video of a monkey using a tool has become very popular online. The video was taken in a forest in Indonesia. It shows a long-tailed macaque (猕猴) picking up a large stone and using it to smash open a kind of nut that is very hard to crack. This behavior is surprising because using a stone as a hammer was once thought to be something only humans and a few of our closest relatives, like chimpanzees, could do.
Scientists call this the “nut-cracking” behavior. They watched the monkey for several days. They noticed that the monkey didn’t just use any stone. It carefully chose a stone that was the right size and weight for the job. It would place the nut on a flat rock (an “anvil”) and then hit it with the stone hammer. The monkey was very skillful and successful in getting the nut out.
This discovery is important because it shows that the ability to use tools might be more common in the animal kingdom than we thought. This particular group of monkeys has no connection to humans or chimpanzees. This means that this intelligent behavior likely developed on its own, which is called “convergent evolution”. The scientists published their discovery in a biology journal, hoping it will lead to more studies on animal intelligence in the wild.

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear from you. My favourite wild animal is the giant panda. It has black and white fur and it mainly feeds on bamboo. It is lovely and quiet. However, pandas are facing great danger now. Their living places are getting smaller because people cut down too many trees. To protect them, we should build more nature reserves and stop destroying their habitats. We can also tell others the importance of protecting wild animals. What’s your favorite animal Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
