Suddenly, a pink boat came through the fog. It looked shiny, like glass. The boat stopped at the river’s edge. Inside, many Oompa-Loompas sat with oars in their hands. They were ready to row. They had orange faces and big smiles.

Forests can be divided into different types according to their climate and location. The most common types are tropical, boreal and temperate.
Tropical rainforests are located near the equator (赤道). They are hot and wet. Although they cover only a tenth of the Earth’s surface, they are home to about half of all species. The biggest is the Amazon Rainforest in South America. It is often called the “lungs (肺) of the Earth” because the plants there produce a lot of oxygen. You’ll find monkeys, frogs, jaguars and many other animals there.
Boreal forests are found in the north. These forests are cold. Many animals live there and have adapted to the cold climate by growing thick fur. The Dancing Forest is a strange and beautiful boreal forest in Russia. Its name comes from the twisted trunks of its trees. The pine trees there have leaves shaped like needles (针)。
Temperate forests are found all over the world. They are hot or cool at different times of the year. There are some temperate forests in the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan, for example. Many types of trees grow there, like maples and birches. Their leaves change color with the seasons and fall off the trees when the weather gets cool. As the weather warms up, the trees grow new leaves.

Did you know that trees can “talk” with each other They “talk” not to be helpful, but because they can’t help it, a new study said.
It may look like each tree in a forest stands alone on its roots (根). But they’re connected (连接) underground by mycorrhizal networks (菌根网络). These networks are made of very small threads of fungi (真菌丝).
Between 80 to 90 per cent of trees are on this “wood-wide web”. Earlier studies show that trees use it to warn others about danger, according to The Conversation. For example, when bugs (虫子) come to eat the leaves of a tree, the tree can send chemical signals (化学信号) through the networks. Other trees then pick up the information and make special juice to keep the bugs away.
However, a new study led by the UK’s University of Oxford says something different. After running tests on math models, scientists found that trees do not in fact get anything from being nice. They could protect themselves by lying to plants around them. This is because trees fight for sunlight, water and food all the time. So, it does not make sense for a tree to help others when it is in trouble.
So why do they send signals Scientists think there may be two reasons. First, trees can’t help sending information, just like we sometimes can’t stop our faces from turning red. Second, the fungi may be the ones spreading the signals because they need plants to live.
37.How are most trees connected underground
A.Using water in the soil. B.By very small threads of fungi.
C.Through small roots of plants. D.With chemical clouds above ground.
38.Why do trees send signals about bugs according to earlier studies
A.To ask animals to send help.
B.To make others run away from the area.
C.To tell nearby trees to make special juice.
D.To welcome bugs to help plants produce seeds.
39.Which order shows how trees keep themselves safe from bugs
①Make special juice ②Get chemical signals ③Bugs eat leaves ④Fungi spread information
A.③→④→②→① B.③→②→④→①
C.③→②→①→④ D.②→③→①→④
40.What does the article mainly tell us about trees
A.Where fungi learn to send information. B.Why trees fight humans for food.
C.When forests become dangerous places. D.How trees “talk” in surprising ways.

What made it unforgettable was that we met a local villager. He told us stories about the mountain and taught us some survival skills.
