Guanqian Street is one of the most famous shopping areas in Suzhou. Lying in the center of Suzhou’s old town, the street is a place where history and modern life dance together.
In the Song Dynasty (960—1279), the street was called “Tianqingguan Street” because of the temple’s (庙) old name. Later, during the Yuan Dynasty (1271—1368), people started calling it “Guanqian Street”. In the 1930s, the street became wider. After 1949, it was rebuilt with asphalt (柏油). In 1982, it became one of China’s earliest walking streets.
The biggest changes happened between 1999 and 2003. New shopping malls were built, but the street still kept its historical style. For example, buildings were low and painted in black, white, and grey to match Suzhou’s ancient buildings. Now Guanqian Street has six parts, such as modern shopping areas and traditional snack areas.
Today, Guanqian Street never sleeps! You can taste delicious spring rolls, try on traditional silk clothes, or watch artists paint fans. During festivals, the street shines with lanterns and lively music. At night, colourful lights make the street even more beautiful. Now, the street has also become a popular place for visitors with new things like 3D screens and themed (主题) cafes.
