What Max does is called self-compassion(自我同情).With self-compassion, you treat yourself kindly. When you mess up or fail, it lets you forgive yourself. After the feeling of guilt (内疚) goes away, you become more relaxed and can think more clearly. This way, self-compassion helps you move forward.
▲ They think self-compassion makes people less active. But a study by Breines and Chen had a different result. The two researchers gave students two tests. The researchers found that students who were kind to themselves after failing the first test spent more time preparing for the second one.
Experts have some suggestions for how to practise self-compassion.You can write a letter to yourself. In the letter, describe the thing that made you feel bad and accept how you felt.Or you can do something you like to make yourself feel calm.Suzy Reading, a psychologist, suggests using a “gentle touch”—like putting one or both hands on your heart. This can make you feel safe and loved.
