When mountains, rivers and something else block the view, you may wonder
whether there is still a road ahead. Be positive.Chinese people will use two common
sayings to tell you that there is always a road ahead.
One of the sayings comes from a book called Civilian Mottos from Ancient
China (《增广贤文》). It was published around the late 16th century. It says, "When a
chariot(马车) arrives in front of a mountain, there's always a road there; when a boat
floats towards a bridge, it will naturally go, straight."
The meaning here is that when you drive a chariot to a mountain, there must be a
road you can take to go forward, and water currents(水流) will naturally straighten a
boat when it goes to pass under a bridge. In more common language: Don't worry
about what's going to happen in the future because things will work themselves out.
The second saying is two lines from a poem written by LuYou, a great Southern
Song Dynasty historian and poet. The two lines are translated as, "Mountains multiply,
streams(小溪) double back and I doubt if there's any road; willows cluster darkly,
blossoms shine, and another village suddenly appears ahead." In easier language:
Don't lose hope, and there's always a way.
These popular expressions are often used to offer comfort and encouragement to
people in difficult times and to encourage people to face the world calmly. There is
a Western saying that follows the same idea,"When God closes one door, he opens a
window.”

六、书面表达
The person I want to thank
The person I want to thank most is my English teacher, Ms. Li.
Last term, I faced great difficulties in English learning. I was extremely afraid of
speaking English in class because I was worried about making mistakes. My
pronunciation was also poor, and I often got nervous when answering the teacher's
questions. As a result, I was far from interested in English, and my test scores kept
dropping. It made me feel very frustrated and helpless.
When Ms. Li noticed my problem, she talked to me patiently after class. She told
me that making mistakes is a normal part of learning and encouraged me to be brave.
She spent extra time helping me practice my pronunciation, correcting every word I
pronounced wrong. She also created many small speaking tasks for me, like
introducing my daily life or talking about my hobbies. Whenever I made progress, she
would praise me loudly in class, which gave me great confidence. Gradually, I
stopped fearing English and even started to enjoy speaking it. With her help, my
English scores improved a lot in the final exam.
Ms. Li’s kindness and patience helped me get through the hard time. She is not
just my teacher, but also a friend who encourages me. I will always be grateful to her
and keep working hard in English.
