On 1 October 1942,the Lisbon Maru,a Japanese commercial ship(商船),was transporting over 1,800 British prisoners of war (POWs) (战俘) to Japan, when it was struck by a U.S. submarine. The ship, which was not flying the sign indicating it was carrying POWs,sank off the coast of East China's Zhejiang Province.
Conditions were appalling. Prisoners were packed in the dark hold. After the ship was hit, they were given no food or water and sat in the dark, running short of air to breathe. One POW used a knife to cut through the covered wooden boards, while an officer calmed the panic and organized an escape.Japanese guards fired at those reaching the deck(甲板),and others were shot at from nearby ships. However, local Chinese fishermen arrived and risked their lives to save 384 men from the water. In total,843 POWs died.
Chinese film-maker Fang Li first heard this story from a passenger ship captain and began investigating. Two years later,an underwater survey led him to a sunken ship he believed to be the Lisbon Maru.Media coverage of the discovery encouraged family members of the victims(受害人) to get in touch with him. When you think of patients recovering from brain injuries or other serious illnesses, the first things you might think about are functional needs. Few people would think about patients' appearances. That, however, is precisely what Sakura Groomers, a volunteer group, does.
Consisting of homemakers, mothers and grandmothers,Sakura Groomers has provided grooming (美容) services to long-term rehabilitation (康复) patients at Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre for the past 30 years. Every Tuesday, these women arrive with simple tools to offer haircuts, shaves, and nail trims(修剪指甲)for patients. Their aim is not just to keep patients looking presentable but to reclaim their sense of self-worth and lift their spirits during recovery.
Sakura Groomers was originally set up by Japanese homemakers from the Japanese Association Singapore in 1993 to offer patients leisure activities such as creating artwork and singing. But after meeting with rehabilitation patients, many of whom are unable to groom themselves, these women decided to offer grooming services instead.
However, the work comes with particular challenges, including learning to cut hair with basic tools within a limited time, while also handling patients' unreasonable requests.Additionally, many patients are bedridden, requiring extra assistance from the nurses for positioning. Volunteers also deal with low-spirited or unhappy patients frequently.
Despite these challenges, the volunteers agreed that being able to help patients in the dark moments of their lives is richly rewarding. 69-year-old Mieko Inotsume, who has been with Sakura Groomers for 22 years, was inspired by the strength of patients. She recalled a young man who stayed positive despite losing his legs."I give patients small moments of happiness, but they bring me great joy," she said.

In the rural(乡村的)town of Tangkou, Kaiping City, the Grand Granary(粮仓) Bookstore stands as a combination of tradition and modernity, repurposing disused grain silos(筒仓) into lively cultural spaces.Designed by Art+Zen Architects, this project transforms material granaries into spiritual granaries, changing from agricultural use to a place promoting cultural growth. This adaptive reuse project is part of a growing trend in architectural circles, where industrial structures are repurposed into public spaces.

In addition to the silos, the project also includes a coffee shop, which offers a modern gathering place for visitors, and a 17-meter "literary bell tower",which provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

This careful attention to detail and respect for historical context highlights the inspiring nature of modern architecture in contemporary Chinese projects.
