Engineering, and her lab started developing the technology in 2017, when the premature failure of newly repaired concrete road surfaces, due to insufficient knowledge of concrete’s strength levels, frequently caused traffic jams. Traffic jams waste 4 billion hours and 3 billion gallons of gas on a yearly basis. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) requested help in getting rid of the situation.
Traditional methods the industry has used for more than a century call for testing large samples of concrete at a lab or an on-site facility. Although these tests can be well understood by the industry, differences between lab and outdoor conditions can lead to inaccurate estimates due to the different cement composition and temperatures of the surrounding area. With the technology Lu and her team have invented, engineers no longer have to rely on them. Instead, they can directly monitor the fresh concrete and accurately measure many of its properties at once.
The sensor communicates with engineers via a smartphone app exactly when the road is strong enough to handle heavy traffic. Construction workers can start the installation (安装) of the sensors by casually throwing them onto the ground of the concrete formwork and covering them with concrete. Next, they connect the sensor cable to simple device that automatically starts recording data. Using the app, workers can receive information on real-time changes in the concrete strength for as long as the strength data is required.
The manufacturing of cement is responsible for 8% of the world’s carbon footprint. Construction codes call for a higher proportion of cement content in concrete mixes to ensure required strength levels. Lu’s team, however, found that too much cement could lead to premature cracks (裂缝) in road surfaces and then worked hard to achieve a solution that improved the design of concrete mixes based on data collected by the sensor. It reduces 20% to 25% the amount of cement used in concrete mixes. “In the field of civil engineering, if we don’t make an impact on the world, there won’t be a world to worry about,” Lu said.

Based on more than 100,000 games and 220,000 individual hits, a new study has found that over 500 home runs (本垒打) since 2010 can be put down to higher-than-average temperatures resulting from climate change — with several hundred more home runs per season to come if global warming continues. “There’s a clear physical mechanism at play — warmer temperatures reduce the density of air and a batted ball is consequently going to fly farther on a warm day,” said senior author Justin Mankin.
The researchers also accounted for a host of potential variables, such as the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the different dimensions of stadiums, the construction of bats and ball, and other technology intended for batters ’ performance enhancement. The fact is that these variables don’t vary day to day or they won’t be affected ifa day is unreasonably warm or cold.
This study is far from the first time that this idea of hotter weather juicing home run statistics has been proposed. During a broadcast, Tim McCarver, a major league catcher, once stated that climate change could be impacting the long ball by “making the air thin” . However, the comment was not well received at the time with a well-known sports website calling the theory “one of the stupidest things ever spoken on a television broadcast” .
When examining each major league ballpark in the US to measure how the average number of home runs per year could rise, they found that the open-air Wrigley Field — which hosts only a limited number of night games due to the local law — would experience more than 15 home runs per season. However, the roofed Tropicana Field would remain the level of one home run or less no matter how hot it gets outside.
