Many people know that Du Fu's poems are filled with his concern for the country and people, as shown in the line "How I wish I could have thousands of spacious mansions". However, few know that he was also a backpacker when he was 20 years old. At that time, Du Fu’s family was well-off. He first traveled around the regions south of the Yangtze River, climbed Yueyang Tower and watched the magnificent Qiantang River tide. Later, he went north and visited Mount Tai, and wrote the famous line there "When I climb to the top of Mount Tai, all other mountains appear small below". This was not an imaginary sentence but his real feeling when he stood on the top of Mount Tai and looked at the surrounding mountains.
Sadly, Du Fu’s life took a sharp turn for the worse afterwards. The Anshi Rebellion broke out, and he had to flee with his family. On the way, he saw the terrible scene of "The rich families have plenty of wine and meat while the poor die of cold on the road". He also suffered the great pain of losing his child to starvation. It was precisely these hardships that turned him from a poet who recorded scenery into a "Poet Sage" who spoke for the common people. His poems are just like a "historical diary", helping us remember the truth of the Tang Dynasty's decline from prosperity.

Sima Guang was a smart and hard-working scholar in ancient China. 1 At the age of seven, he could recite Zuo Zhuan easily and explain its main ideas clearly. When he grew up, he found there were too many history books, but no systematic and complete general history for people to learn from the rise and fall of past dynasties. So he thought of the idea of writing a history book to help rule the country.
In the reign of Emperor Yingzong of Song, his idea got support from the court. 2 They needed to check hundreds of books, including 17 official histories and over 300 other materials, covering a history of 1,362 years.
The work was very tiring. Sima Guang was strict with himself. 3 To save time, he made a special "warning pillow" — a hollowed-out wooden pillow that would roll away if he moved a little. When he felt sleepy at night, his head would slip, the pillow would roll off, and he would wake up at once. Then he would go back to writing at once.
4 After 19 years of hard work, Zizhi Tongjian was finally finished in 1084. It has 294 volumes and about 3 million words, and it became an important history book for later generations to study ancient Chinese history.
A. He checked every piece of historical material repeatedly and tried to write in a simple and clear way.
