Whcn Lila Martincz moved to Maple Strcct, shc was struck by a marked contrast. The houses were well-kcpt,with flowers blooming in most yards, but at the corner of hcr block sat a 1,200- squarc-foot parking lot-a dumping ground for old tires, broken furnituro, and overgrown weeds. To Lila,it looked likc a "wound"that the neighborhood had simply learned to ignore.
Instead of complaining, the 17-year-old decided to take action. She began knocking on doors,a clipboard in hand, asking her neighbors,“What would you do with that lot if you could ”
Mrs.Henderson,an 82-year-old resident living alone, teared up as she said,“I used to have a garden, but I can't bend down anymore.I'd love to smell fresh flowers again."Mr.Torres, the owner of the local grocery store, offered to donate tools and soil.Even the teenagcrs were interested, suggesting a place to play basketball.
Lila realized the project was bigger than just cleaning up rubbish. She named it the "Maple Community Garden”and launched a crowdfunding campaign. With the raised money, she hired a local construction company to level the ground. The first Saturday was backbreaking.Lila and twenty volunteers filled 40 garbage bags with rubbish. As the weeks passed, the lot began to breathe again. Sunflowers towered over the fence, attracting bees and butterflies.Tomatoes ripened on the vine.
More importantly, the people began to bloom. The teens who helped build the basketball court started assisting Mrs.Henderson to carry her groceries.Mr.Torres began hosting weekly barbecues using vegetables from the garden.Neighbors who had lived next to each other for decades but never spoken were now exchanging recipes and gardening tips.
Lila said,“I thought I was just building a garden, but what I really built was a bridge. That empty lot used to divide us;now it connects us.”

It is no surprisc that getting cnough slccp, cxcrcising and eating well arc crucial to a long lifc, But it was unknown how very small lifestyle changes affcct our lifespan, and hcalthspan, which is the number of years spent in good health.
To fill this gap in our knowledge,Nicholas Koemel and his colleagues at the University of Sydney first analyzed sleep, dietary and physical activity data from nearly 60,000 adults, aged between 40 and 69,from the UK Biobank project. In that project, the participants completed surveys that asked them to recall their diets over the past year. Then, they wore movement trackers on their wrist for a week to measure their exercise and sleeping habits, and their mortality(死亡率)and health records were tracked over a subsequent follow-up period of eight years.
After an in-depth analysis, the researchers Nicholas'team used a statistical model to estimate that, compared with the bottom 5 percent of participants with the least healthy lifestyles, those who slept for about 5 minutes more each day, engaged in exercise for about 2 minutes longer and ate an extra half serving of vegetables daily lived for a year longer,on average.
This combination of small lifestyle changes had the same effect as making larger shifts in only one aspect of lifestyle-for instance, sleeping for 25 minutes longer without adjusting exercise or diet."When we package lifestyle changes together, we get more bang for our buck and we reduce the overall requirement from any one behaviour,"says Koemel.
However,Alan Cohenat from Columbia University was not on the same page."Dietary recall surveys may contain some errors because people forget what they have eaten, and it is impossible to know whether a week of physical activity or sleep data is really representative of someone's general habits over longer periods,"he said.
28.What does Nicholas Koemel's study focus on
A.Effects of small lifestyle shifts. B.Secrets to a balanced life.
C.Ways to improve living quality. D.Benefits of healthy routines.
29.How was the study carried out
A.By using a data model. B.By monitoring wrist trackers.
C.By doing health surveys. D.By gathering follow-up records.
30.Which best explains "we get more bang for our buck"underlined in paragraph 4
A.Rome wasn’t built in a day. B.Slow and steady wins the race.
C.Never judge a book by its cover. D.A little effort yields great results.
31.What can be inferred from Alan Cohenat's words
A.The survey lacks public information.
B.Participants takes the research casually.
C.The study may stillhave some limitations.
D.A week's records can mirror personal habits.

The Dunning-Kruger effect, named after the psychologists who first studied it,means people who aren't very good at a given task are overconfident while people with high ability tend to underestimate their skills. However,a recent research by Aalto University scientists reveals that using artificial intelligence(AI)all but removes this effect-in fact,it almost reverses(逆转)it
In their study involving 500 participants, researchers administered logical reasoning tasks from the Law School Admission Test.Half the group used ChatGPT,while the other half worked independently. Both groups were later quizzed on their AI literacy and how well they thought they performed.Surprisingly, their research showed that AI usage nearly changed the Dunning-Kruger effect:high-skill AI users showed the greatest overestimation of thcir performance.“Our findings reveal a significant inability to assess one's performance accurately when using AI,"noted co-author Robin Welsch.
This phenomenon springs from “cognitive offloading”(认知卸载)-users accept AI-generated answers without critical confirmation.Less engagement in our own reasoning reduces our ability to evaluate our performance accurately.Interestingly,AI assistance narrows the gap between high and low-skillusers because large language models improve everyone's performance to some degree.
The researchers warn of a potential consequence. As people rely more on results without questioning them,a dangerous inconsistency emerges:improved performance paired with reduced self-assessment capability.Without accurate error-checking and reflection, critical thinking skills may become worse over time.
Furthermore, the flattening of ability differences means widespread overconfidence in AI- assisted tasks, particularly among the most experienced users, leading to an increased climate of miscalculated decision-making and a gradual destruction of skills. One method the team suggests to arrest such decline is to have AI itself encourage further questioning in users, with developers adjusting responses to encourage reflection, asking questions like “how confident are you in this answer ”,or otherwise promoting further interaction through measures like confidence scores.
32.Why is "the Dunning-Kruger effect"mentioned
A.To support an idea. B.To highlight a dilemma.
C.To explain a concept. D.To introduce a phenomenon.
33.What is the finding of the study
A.Low-skill users outperform high-skill ones.
B.Users overestimate abilities when using AI.
C.AI learning improves self-assessment accuracy.
D.Cognitive offloading enhances one's performance.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。
Divergent (发散性)thinking is an ability to generate multiple approaches to solving a problem. The divergent thinkers typically answer simple questions like“What are the uses for a flower pot ” n many ways. 36 A genius of divergent thinking would come up with a hundred possible inswers, and they do this by changing the concepts of already existing thinking.
Research shows that divergent thinking is mostly found among people who know how to ask questions.Divergent thinking is not so much about finding answers as it is about asking the question to get to those answers. 37 The more you ask clear questions that explore the differences, the better your chance of succeeding.
38 This technique is a tool that builds upon ideas.Allow everyone to think more freely in the group atmosphere.Don't pursue a practical solution.Instead, gather ideas relevant to the problem itself.Besides brainstorming, you can also keep a journal.Using a journal enables you to capture and record various ideas that people can have during unusual times and places. 39
Another effective way is to create a subject or mind-mapping visual. 40 And make sure the visuals show the relationships among these ideas.Take“Start a Charity”for e up with necessary subtopics, and use lines and circles to visualize the topic. After generating ideas in these ways, you can arrange your ideas in an innovative manner.
A.This method is used to exchange ideas.
B.It helps find the answers to the questions.
C.Put the related ideas in the form of a chart or a picture.
D.Asking the right questions willget what you are seeking.
E.Brainstorming is one way to improve your divergent thinking.
F.An average person would have 10 to 15 answers to this question.
G.Later,it can become a source book of ideas to develop and organize.

I hated her instantly. She had shown up and taken all my friends on my very first day back.
The bell rang and I dashed inside.I headed straight for my usual seat at the front, cxpecting my friends to crowd around and sit next to me as usual. But to my surprise,my closest friends Jill and Molly sat beside Colette.Soon the three of them were deep in conversation.
Mrs Melville came in,welcoming us back to school, and the first thing she did after that was to introduce Colette.Colette turned around and waved at us all, smiling confidently.
Then lunch-time came.Yes,today, nobody was interested in what my lunchbox was.
"Everything OK,Kellie ”Mrs Melville asked me when I was sitting by myself."I don't often see you on your own.”“I’m fine!I just fancied a bit of peace and quiet.”I forced a smile.Mrs Melville nodded, looking unconvinced, though. It was the longest lunch-break ever.

I’m glad to know that you are interested in Chinese calligraphy. I would like to recommend the character “Yong” as a good starting point for beginners.
Structurally, this character is well-balanced and contains a variety of basic strokes, including dots, lines and turns. Practising it can help learners master fundamental writing skills and develop a sense of structure.
More importantly, “Yong” means “eternity”, symbolizing continuity and lasting beauty. It reflects the Chinese belief in harmony and balance, making the writing exercise a cultural experience.
I hope you will enjoy practising it.
Yours,

Later in the hands-on design class, Mrs Melville announced a seat rearrangement. I felt a knot in my stomach when I was informed I would have to sit next to Colette. Then Mrs Melville assigned us a task to make a paper lantern together. I lowered my head, pretending to be busy, hoping to avoid any conversation. Noticing this, Colette smiled and suggested we share ideas. Though still a little annoyed, I picked up my tools and decided to cooperate, if only to finish the task.
As we worked together for a paper lantern, I began to see Colette in a different light. She folded colored paper and cut simple patterns, trying to make the lantern look better. When I struggled, she patiently showed me how to fix it and decorated it with ribbons. Watching her, I couldn’t help wondering if I hadjudged her too quickly. My heart softened. “Would you like to sit with me tomorrow ” I asked boldly. She accepted my invitation, a bright smile on her face. Perhaps being the “Queen Bee” meant something different – not standing above others, but bringing them in.

W: Why not spend our vacation in California We could visit Jenny. She can be our guide.
M: I don’t think so. She’s with her parents in London. Her father has been in the hospital recently.
Text 2
W: Look at that statue! It looks like a real man sitting in a park, playing chess with his friend.
M: Wow! How lifelike it is! The card says it is the most popular work on display.
Text 3
W: You’re swimming again I thought you preferred hiking.
M: Only because it’s raining. But give me a bike any day – mountain trails beat everything!
Text 4
W: Watson just took the day off today.
M: Wait – hasn’t he been absent three times this month
W: No, that was Wells – he’s had three dentist appointments. Watson rarely takes time off—except for math competitions.
Text 5
M: Zoe, is that your umbrella on the chair It’s starting to rain heavily outside.
W: Yes, but you can use it. I have a raincoat in my bag.
M: Thanks! I was thinking about buying one, but this saves me.

W: Grandpa, I thought gardening was easy. But last week, I didn’t dig the hole deep enough, and the apple tree almost fell over!
M: Take your time, Nancy. Dig deeper and keep some dirt around the roots.
W: Yeah, I’ve figured out the trick. Yesterday I planted three trees, and Uncle said I did a neat job. I’m tired but happy.
M: Great. Remember to water the flowers in the evening. They grow better when it’s cool.
W: Got it! This holiday, I learned gardening and really appreciated the work behind our food.
Text 7
M: I just ordered a bookshelf. It’ll take about two weeks to arrive by sea.
W: But we don’t have any space left for new stuff! The living room is now filled with samples from Jerry’s company.
M: I know. That’s why I’ve put our old bookshelf on the resale market. The one we’ve had for over 30 years. It’s even older than Jerry! Honestly, it’s really time to get rid of it. And many people have messaged me asking about it.
W: You really think you can sell it in two weeks
M: Of course! I’ve already got a buyer.
W: Then we’d better start taking the books off it right away.
M: Yes, let’s do it now!
Text 8
M: Hi, Lily. Are you ready to talk about your presentation on campus recycling
W: Yes. We’re comparing how two schools use recycled materials.
M: Maplewood and Riverside
W: Right. First, we looked at what the materials are made from. Maplewood uses plastic bottles to make benches, while Riverside turns old paper into notice boards. Oh, Riverside also uses glass in art projects, and Maplewood doesn’t.
M: Interesting. And how are you evaluating them
W: By cost, creativity, and how well the items suit school needs.
M: Good – but discuss“school needs”first. The other points depend on that.
W: Got it. We’ll spend four minutes comparing, three evaluating, and leave three for questions. Next week, I’ll speak. And Tom handles visuals.
M: Good. Keep slides simple—just keywords. Too much text confuses listeners.

M: Skyline Hotel. How can I help you
W: Hi, this is Linda Chen. I checked out of room 512 this morning at around 9 a.m. and headed straight to the airport for my flight. But I just realized I left my blue wool coat in the room before the security check!
M: Let me check Yes, we have it!
W: Great! My flight isn’t taking off until 3 p.m. Could you put it on the 12:30 hotel bus to the airport I’ll meet it there.
M: I’m sorry, but for security reasons, we can’t send personal items on the bus unless the guest is with them.
W: I understand. In that case, I’ll call a taxi right now to pick it up. Once I’ve booked the ride, I’ll inform you of the driver’s name and phone number. Could you hand the coat to him
M: Absolutely.
Text 10
W: Hello, everyone! I’d like to tell you a book that has changed my life. It’s called Great Morning. A friend recommended this best-selling book to me one month ago because I was struggling with a busy schedule. As a full-time senior student, in addition to completing my studies and working part-time, I am also the singer in our school band. I often felt like there just wasn’t enough time. The book’s author suggested waking 30 minutes earlier and making good use of the extra half-hour. At first, I hated it and felt uncomfortable. However, I kept doing it for 28 days. I started getting up at 6:00 a.m. and then spent five minutes writing down some thoughts. Next, I drank some water. After that, I exercised for fifteen minutes, and lastly, looked at my schedule for the day and planned ahead. Now, I can balance my studies and hobbies well because my day is so well-organized. If you feel like you always need more time to get things done, I highly recommend reading this book.
