Dog’s Best Friend
Jarrett Little was road testing his mountain bike outside of Columbus, Georgia, when his riding
partner, Chris Dixon, stopped suddenly. Something moving nearby among the trees had caught her
attention. It turned out to be a sandy-colored five-month-old dog.
“He was really thin, and had a broken leg,” Little told CBS News. The cyclists fed the friendly dog
and shared their water. They also quickly realized that the dog was following them, although they had no
idea how. They were more than seven miles from downtown and riding bikes. “We couldn’t leave him,”
Little said. “Out there next to the Oxbow Meadows, he would end up as alligator (短吻鳄) food.” Little, a
5
31-year-old business owner, had an idea. He carefully picked up his new friend and put the 38-pound dog’
s back legs into the pockets of his cycling shirt. Then he placed the dog’s front legs over his shoulders.
“He was hurt, so he wasn’t trying to fight,” Little says. “He was also happy that we were there,
touching him, and hadn’t taken off on him.”
Their 30-minute ride into town ended at a bike store, where they got more water and food for the
dog. “That was when Andrea Shaw, a company worker, happened by. The dog went straight to her,
smelling and loving on her,” says Dixon. Shaw was touched and, after learning what had happened,
decided to keep the dog.
Shaw called him Columbo after the town where they’d met and planned an operation (手术) on his
leg. Today, Columbo is living the high life on a farm with a horse and a 6-year-old boy to keep him
company (陪伴). As Dixon said, “He is really the luckiest dog alive.”

Being Open to Change: A Chance to Grow
Change is a part of life that people experience every day. From our first steps to the new challenges
at school, change helps shape who we are. Although our minds sometimes prefer familiar (相似的 )
routines, learning to get used to change is important for our personal growth.
Many of us feel uneasy when faced with something new. For example, some students hesitate to
join a new club or try a different subject because they worry about failure (失败). This fear often stops us
from exploring opportunities (机会 ) that could help us improve and make our lives more interesting.
Change is not difficult in itself. The fear of change holds us back from reaching our full ability.
Luckily, there are ways to help us feel less worried about the unknown. One effective way is to take
small steps toward a new goal. By focusing on (专注于) one change at a time, such as reading one new
book each month or joining one activity, we can gradually build our confidence. Talking with friends,
teachers, or family members about our worries also helps us see new ideas and get support. Besides,
6
taking a moment to think about our successes and the positive parts of our lives can replace fear with
excitement and strong will.
Many people have discovered that when they let go of their fear, they open themselves up to
exciting opportunities. A student who once stayed away from public speaking may find that a small step
forward brings more self-confidence, or a shy person may slowly become more active in group activities.
Being open to change is not always easy, but every small step can lead to a brighter future.
Change is not something to be feared. Instead, it is a chance to learn, grow, and discover a new and
better self.
40.What does the writer think of change
A. It stops our personal happiness. B. It happens to everyone.
C. It makes people have less progress. D. It is very special.
41.What does the word “hesitate” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. Become brave. B. Look confident and decide easily.
C. Get excited. D. Feel uncertain and are slow to act.
42.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with
A. Focusing on a few changes at a time can help us feel less worried about the new things.
B. Students need to change their communication ways when they talk with their teachers.
C. Thinking about our achievements is a useful way to reduce the fear of change.
D. Shy people need more fear to make them more active.
43.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To tell people to explore the change of the future.
B. To discuss the opportunities of facing change.
C. To advise people to stay away from change.
D. To encourage people to face change bravely.
D
Welcoming four-legged friends into the classroom is becoming popular across the country. And
research shows that therapy-dog (治疗犬 ) programs provide important benefits (好处 ) for students.
According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, “Therapy dogs have been called ‘miracle workers’ because
of their calming influence on students and teachers.”
There is an obvious difference between service dogs and therapy dogs. Service dogs help those with
specific disabilities, such as problems with eyesight. Therapy dogs are trained to provide (提供) health
and social-emotional benefits.
7
Tarah Randazzo is a middle school counselor (顾问) at Greenfield Middle School in Wisconsin. She
has a yellow Labrador, Archie, a therapy dog that she brings with her to school a couple of days each
week. She says students love Archie days, and Archie brings so many positive benefits, like growing
attendance, better problem-solving, and just overall calmness to middle school life. “I’ve noticed that
when students are really worried about grades, just being near Archie makes a big difference,” Randazzo
says. Dogs in the classroom provide both physical and emotional health benefits for students.
According to one study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), having a dog present
in the classroom improves a positive mood and provides an important anti-stress influence on the body.
In fact, the simple act of petting a dog has the influence of lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Pet
therapy also lowers stress hormones (荷尔蒙). In other words, just being in contact with a therapy dog
calms kids down when they’re upset. And lowering feelings of worry and depression (沮丧) enables them
to focus on learning.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of therapy dogs in the classroom is the influence on students’
social-emotional development. Loving and lovable, dogs are good listeners who make no judgment.
Children get on well with these gentle animals, helping them feel more connected and confident. This
helps reduce bad behavior and anger.
The positive influence of therapy dogs begins in life and goes into schools, helping students become
more caring and understanding. Let’s support their presence in schools to create a better educational
experience for everyone.
44.Why does the writer mention Archie in Paragraph 3
A. To discuss if therapy dogs improve students’ learning.
B. To show the benefits therapy dogs bring to students.
C. To prove therapy dogs are better than service dogs.
D. To explain why therapy dogs can calm kids down.
45.According to the passage, who would benefit most from therapy dogs
A. Counselors who train the therapy dogs.
B. Students who are worried about the grades.
C. Students who have problems with their eyesight.
D. Teachers who want their students to do better in studies.
46.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Therapy Dogs: Lesson Planners B. Therapy Dogs: Learning Coaches
C. Therapy Dogs: Classroom Friends D. Therapy Dogs: Classroom Managers

Shanghai has just opened its first “forest library” to the public. It has caught much attention from
book lovers and people who like nature. Unlike traditional indoor libraries, the “forest library” is special
because it is built to keep the forest as it is—every tree, bush and green area stays natural.
The library is called Read & Joy Forest. It is located (位于 ) in a green space next to Shanghai
Library East. It covers 20,546 square meters and is fully open-air. There are rows of strong wooden
benches for readers to sit comfortably. A small information desk with volunteers is there to help visitors.
Green areas are connected by winding (蜿蜒的) wooden walkways that fit well with nature. The forest has
many kinds of trees, like tall pine trees and leafy maple trees. This way, visitors can walk slowly through
the quiet, green forest and also get a rare (难得的) chance to relax with a book while hearing birds sing
and leaves move.
People love reading here. Wang Xiaohua, said, “I love the fresh air and the way sunlight comes
through the trees. Being around nature calms me down. So I’ll come back every weekend for sure.”
Another reader added, “I worked indoors all morning, looking at a screen. So I came here to breathe
fresh air. The smell of pine and soil is so relaxing. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a good
book.”
Young adults visit the “forest library” most because they want a quiet place away from city life. When
they are not reading, many walk slowly along the wooden paths. They sometimes stop to enjoy the trees
or listen to the forest sound. So the “forest library” is not just for reading—it’s also a peaceful place to
relax both mind and body.
