We have two daughters:Kirsten is seven years old and Kelly is four.Last Sunday evening,we invited some people home for dinner.I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join me in answering the door when the bell rang.I would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests’ coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived.I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests made a particular fuss over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a remarkable girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big “to do” over the younger child because he/she is the one who seems more easily to be hurt.We do it with the best intention.
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child.I was a little worried that Kirsten would feel she was being outshone.I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes.I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said,“What are you doing,my dear ”
She turned to me with a sad expression and said,“Mommy, why don’t people like me the way they like my sister Is it because I’m not pretty Is that why they don’t say nice things about me ”
I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now,whenever I visit a friend’s home,I make a point of speaking to the elder child first.

A.the guests gave her more coats to carry
B.she didn’t look as pretty as Kelly
C.the guests praised her sister more than her
D.her mother didn’t introduce her to the guests
27.We can conclude from the passage that .
A.parents should pay more attention to the elder children
B.the younger children are usually more easily hurt
C.people usually like the elder children more
D.adults should treat children equally

Surfing the Internet through social media can feel like a nightmare these days. You’re reading about the horrors of the war,and then you’re learning about the latest devastating climate news.It can feel like everything is falling apart. This,of course, can have a significant effect on your mental health. You start to feel overwhelmed. Not only are you dealing with the regular stresses of daily life, but now you’re thinking about the most serious problems the world is facing.Social media algorithms (算法) tend to elevate the most contentious (有争议的) content. They’re putting the terrible result in doomscrolling, which means repeatedly checking the Internet for bad news.
According to psychology experts, doomscrolling has become a serious problem.Matthew Price,a professor of psychological science at the University of Vermont, says that ingesting a lot of negative news can cause anxiety and depression.“Some of the work that we have done has shown it definitely increases your stress at the moment. It could also increase your anxiety throughout the rest of your day,” Price says.“When you doomscroll,it gets much easier to reach your limit than I think you would if you weren’t doing that.”
This doesn’t just affect individuals.“When a lot of people are experiencing the stress of the news of the world at once,it can make them more likely to snap at each other”,Price says.“We may not realize it,but the reason why that guy was rude to you at Starbucks might be that he had read too many scary news articles.”
“When you have multiple people who are struggling, they’re going to have a harder time communicating together,” says Bethany Teachman,a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia.“We have to think of these things from a systemic perspective or we’re not going to be very effective at making change.”
In terms of solutions,Teachman says people need to limit their exposure to social media. It’s OK to read some news to stay informed and check out what people are saying online, but it can get unhealthy if you overdo it.Once you’ve read enough to know what’s going on,think of other things that you enjoy doing that help you maintain your mental health.

B.Most young people face mental health problems.
C.Doomscrolling has a big impact on mental well-being.
D.It’s important to provide some positive content for people.
30.Which of the following statements shows Bethany Teachman’s opinion
A.It’s challenging to prevent doomscrolling.
B.The effect of doomscrolling is limited to individuals.
C.People today cannot communicate well with each other.

31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Logging off at the right time
B.Caring for your mental health
C.Serious problems the world is facing
D.The negative effect of doomscrolling

A watched pot never boils, but time flies when you’re having fun. These all-too-familiar sayings have a basis in solid science—our sense of time expands and contracts (收缩) depending on the way we experience the world around us.This is not just a general impression of time’s passage. It also has a great deal to do with psychology.
“There are a lot of illusions (错觉) of time,” says Martin Wiener,a scientist at George Mason University.Recently, his team have found that more memorable images seem to last longer, and these lasting images also appear to be more memorable.Looking at red objects makes time pass slower than staring at blue ones. The slowdown also occurs when inspecting bigger and brighter objects.
To understand how the memorability of an image might relate to our sense of time, the team conducted four experiments,in which participants were shown images with different time periods. They were asked to hold down a button, either “short” or “long”,to indicate the length of time the image was displayed on the screen.Participants perceived that more memorable images remained on the screen longer and that they were more likely to recall them later.
These results suggest that images aren’t just more memorable if people look at them for a longer time,a well-established effect.Images are also more memorable if people perceive that they have looked for longer when they really haven’t.This suggests that there is some underlying factor that is causing both of these effects.
The team later found that more memorable images were processed faster. They help the brain process more information in a limited time. This is especially relevant (有关的) to the brain’s visual system. With limited resources, the visual areas have to set priorities. In other words, memorable images may be memorable because they’re just easy for our systems to process. Why faster processing would make time last longer is still a mystery, however. For now,the most reasonable explanation for why our brain slows time is that it is increasing the amount of information it can take in at once.
32.What is the function of paragraph 1
A.To prove an opinion.
B.To present a phenomenon.
C.To challenge a viewpoint.
D.To introduce a new finding.
33.Why did the team conduct the experiments
A.To perceive memorable images.
B To categorize the length of time.
C.To know the secret of time perception.
D.To test the memory of the participants.
34.According to Wiener, what’s the underlying cause of some images being more memorable
A.They have limited resources.
B.They contain more information.
C.They are looked at for a longer time.
D.They are easy for the brain to process.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Memory relies on visual aids
B.Faster processing makes time fly
C.Resources influence time perception
D.Memorable things make time slow down

I’ve always prided myself on being a polite and well-mannered gentleman, disliking any behavior that lacks proper politeness. However,in an unexpected turn of events,I found myself becoming the very person I have a strong dislike for.It happened during a wait for a train at the Southampton station.
One afternoon,I was waiting for the train to London, and the station was crowded with travelers. With some time to spare,I decided to go into a convenience store to grab a pack of potato chips, which I put into my backpack. With a bit of time before the train’s departure,I took out a book, found a seat, and absorbed myself in reading.
After a while,I noticed a woman beside me casually helping herself to my bag of chips, showing complete disrespect.I was shocked by her rudeness.Without any acknowledgment or permission, she had dived into my snack. While I had the urge to express my dissatisfaction,I held back.I slightly shifted the bag in her direction, hoping she’d take it easy.To my surprise, the woman remained unbothered by the situation and went on pulling out a chip from the pack, giving me a smile. Her actions were so daring that I was left in disbelief. At that moment,I struggled with conflicting emotions. On one hand,I felt like talking to her directly about her actions, but on the other,I resisted the urge, maintaining my calmness.
Then the broadcast announced,“Passengers, please board the train.” I absent-mindedly (茫然地) threw my book into my backpack, grabbed the empty potato chip wrapper that had been shared, dropped it into the rubbish bin,and headed straight for the ticket gate.Soon I found my seat on the train.Unexpectedly, the woman’s seat was directly opposite mine.Feeling upset,I reached into my backpack intending to continue my reading so as to calm myself down.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
To my astonishment,I discovered my unopened bag of chips resting safely inside.

“No worries,” the woman said with a smile.

A.They have limited resources.
B.They contain more information.
C.They are looked at for a longer time.
D.They are easy for the brain to process.
答案 D [细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“ In other words,memorable...our systems to process.”可知,Wiener认为一些图像更容易被记住的根本原因是它们容易被我们的大脑处理。因此,选项D符合题意,故选D项。]

A.Memory relies on visual aids
B.Faster processing makes time fly
C.Resources influence time perception
D.Memorable things make time slow down

My View on Pre-cooked Food for Students
Interested in the discussion about whether pre-cooked food should be admitted to schools,I’d like to share my views.
I am strongly against the proposal.First, stored for a long time,pre-cooked food does great harm to our health.Kept long although frozen, the food may probably go rotten, and the plastic boxes can pollute the food inside,too.Secondly,pre-cooked food often has only one taste, which easily makes us get tired of it.Thirdly,pre-cooked food industry will quickly kill the traditional cooking art, removing a lot of excellent cooks’ jobs.
I would not buy any pre-cooked food, hoping my fellow students will resist the terrible food.

To my astonishment,I discovered my unopened bag of chips resting safely inside. All of a sudden I realized the truth that while we were waiting for the train, the lady ate her own potato chips. And how unreasonable and arrogant I was, although I actively controlled my anger at the time.At this moment,I felt extremely embarrassed and ashamed. How should I be so rude and impolite Where was my own cultivation ! I sincerely apologized to the lady immediately and explained my negligence.
“No worries,” the woman said with a smile. The woman went on to say that understanding was the best choice for everyone.Though I ate her potato chips in the station without her permission, she was still friendly to me,which was the true embodiment of cultivation and quality.Compared with this woman, the quality and self-cultivation I claimed was not worth mentioning. She was the example I really wanted to learn from
