Comments and Opinions from Reader’s Letters
Flood Of Tears
‘Yellow Dog’s Travels’ (My Story,Feb/Mar) made me back to 2010 when our family dog,Folly, disappeared during a flood.Folly was very close to my grandmother and losing Folly made her feel lost.
A year went by.One day,my father and I were driving through the countryside when, like a bolt out of the blue,we saw a brown dog that looked like Folly. We rushed to pick up Grandma and drove back excitedly.Their reunion made us all cry. They were never separated after that.
Medical Miracle
I was profoundly inspired by the article ‘Lives In The Balance’ (Bonus Read,Feb/Mar).On my first reading,I was impressed by the determination and devotion of neurosurgeon Dr Christopher Honey. After I reread it,the thought that came to me was, this goes beyond medicine. It is about the miracle of medicine.
Dynamic Metropolis
I loved reading the travel story ‘Heart & Seoul’ (Feb/Mar).The article brilliantly captured Seoul’s lively combination of tradition and modernity, offering readers a vivid glimpse into its rich cultures, from ancient palace’s to dynamic street markets. It is a fascinating guide for anyone considering a visit to Seoul.
Flown The Coop
Like the story ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’ (Feb/Mar),my youngest moved out recently. When he left,I sat on his bed and cried. My youngest had been at home for 26 years and suddenly his bedroom was empty.
We had spent a lot of time together—I home-schooled him for four years.I was lost when he left, but after struggling for a while I managed to find myself again. At meal times he would recount his day.
Now,walking around the supermarket I see the things I used to buy for him and it’s hard. The house feels empty, too big.We started out as two and grew to five. Now we are learning to find our way back to the days before children.
21.What brought the reader of ‘Yellow Dog’s Travels’ to tears
A.Reading a similar story.
B.The disappearance of Folly.
C.Spotting a brown dog.
D.Folly’s return to Grandma.
22.What impressed the reader of ‘Heart & Seoul’ most
A.The locals’ wisdom.
B.The modern architecture.
C.The historic markets.
D.The tradition-modern mix.
23.What do the four comments have in common
A.They involve the readers’ personal experiences.
B.They share the readers’ emotional response.
C.They show the readers’ passion for family.
D.They center on the readers’ life changes.

Every spring, about two billion birds fly through Texas. However, light pollution in urban areas can be deadly for many migratory (迁徙的) species.
The experts from the Texas Conservation Alliance, who ran the Lights Out program in 2020,convinced downtown businesses and residents to switch off unnecessary lighting from 11 p.m.to 6 a.m.during spring and autumn, reducing light pollution that is otherwise misleading to birds.
As of October 31 of 2024,the team recorded 42 bird deaths, down from the 110 deaths documented in the fall of 2023.This is partly due to the support of downtown building owners who have agreed to turn off lights overnight after joining the Lights Out program in 2021.
In addition to making the very simple switch,Lights Out teaches city officials and other involved parties how to decrease light pollution and save urban wildlife. The Alliance has also developed a way to forecast bird migration during specific times and in specific locations, helping residents and businesses predict when birds may pass so they can activate the Lights Out program more accurately.
And it’s not just a win for the birds, but for everyone who shares an ecosystem with them.Birds are good signs of ecosystem health.Plus, birds look and sound really cool and have interesting behaviors.
Bird lovers can do their part, too. The Lights Out program, for instance, has started using dBird,a website where residents can report cases of dead and injured birds, which helps experts target their efforts.
“We’re only one team.We can’t collect all the data on the building strikes. We know there is more happening,” director MeiLing Liu told a reporter.“So spreading the word that anyone can report a bird strike and help us collect this data is what we’re trying to do with this website.”
24.What does paragraph 3 tell us about the Lights Out program
A.It raised awareness of conservation.
B.It aimed to reduce electricity waste.
C.It helped decrease the deaths of birds.
D.It became popular among the country.
25.What is the purpose of paragraph 5
A.To explore ways of conservation.
B.To recognize the importance of birds.
C.To confirm the function of ecosystem.
D.To assess the effectiveness of the program.
26.What is the significance of dBird
A.It tracks the reported birds.
B.It brings bird enthusiasts together.
C.It increases the number of birds.
D.It allows bird lovers to contribute.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.Go Dark to Save Birds
B.Lead the Birds Home
C.Rescue the Dying Birds
D.Turn Off Lights for Future

Despite the hopes of both astronomers and science fiction fans alike,Venus may never have been habitable to life. This is the conclusion of a new study out of the University of Cambridge, which has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Today,Venus is an extremely hot planet, with surface temperatures around 867 °F,a thick atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide (CO2),and a surface pressure 92 times that of Earth.Yet the planet has been long theorized to have been habitable many millions of years ago, with oceans of liquid water.
The researchers, however, found that Venus’s atmosphere is too dry to have supported oceans. The planet’s atmosphere lacks enough water, which would have evaporated (蒸发) as the planet warmed over time.
There are two main theories about Venus’s history:Either the planet has always been as hot as it is today,so water never existed in liquid form,or Venus gradually became hotter due to the greenhouse effect, causing any water to evaporate. The Cambridge team took a different approach by studying Venus’s current atmospheric chemistry. They calculated (计算) the rates at which water and other gases are destroyed in Venus’s atmosphere.Unlike Earth’s volcanoes, which release mostly water vapor,Venus’s volcanoes release only about 6% water. This suggests that Venus’s volcanic magma contains very little water.
The study also highlighted that, unlike Earth and Mars,Venus shows no signs of erosion (侵蚀) caused by liquid water.Since liquid water is necessary for life as we know it,the lack of such evidence makes it unlikely that Venus ever supported Earth-like life.
While we may not know for certain if Venus ever supported life, the study suggests that it likely never had oceans. This discovery affects the search for life on other planets, especially those similar to Venus.
NASA’s DAVINCI mission, expected to reach Venus later this decade, may provide further answers.Understanding Venus’s history can help guide the search for life beyond Earth.
28.What is a misunderstanding about Venus from paragraph 2
A.It is packed with a wide range of wildlife.
B.It is habitable with oceans of liquid water.
C.It becomes hotter due to the greenhouse effect.
D.It has a thinner atmosphere than that of Earth.
29.How did the Cambridge team conduct the study
A.By referring to previously published articles.
B.By analyzing Venus’s atmospheric chemistry.
C.By creating an environment similar to Venus’s.
D.By cooperating with the scientists from NASA.
30.What is the author’s attitude to NASA’s DAVINCI mission
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful.
C.Concerned. D.Favourable.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.Oceans on Venus May Never Have Existed
B.It Would be Possible to Make Venus Livable
C.Astronomers’ Dream Will be Realized Soon
D.Research Proved a Classic Theory is Correct

Consumers’ love for avocados (牛油果) in the USA seems to know no bounds. From 2001 through 2020,consumption of this fruit rich in healthy fats tripled nationwide, rising to over 8 pounds per person yearly. On average,90% of those avocados are grown in the southwest Mexican state of Michoacán.As with other foods that have become trendy;such as acai berries, intensive avocado production is causing significant environmental damage.
Michoacán is the only place on earth that grows avocados year-round,thanks to its mild climate, abundant rainfall and deep volcanic soils.Even so,however, monocultures are never environmentally sustainable.Introducing single,high-yielding plant varieties leads growers to quit native crops. This makes the local ecosystem easily harmed by threats such as pest attacks and reduces food options. It also destroys soils and increases use of agrochemicals.Monoculture also can cause deforestation.Mexican officials estimate that avocado production spurred the clearance of 2,900 to 24,700 acres of forests per year from 2010 through 2020.And it’s resource-intensive:Avocado trees consume four to five times more water than Michoacán’s native pines, damaging water resources for human consumption.
Today, avocados are one of the most-regulated exports from Mexico. However, these rules do little to address the industry’s environmental impacts.Farmers in Michoacán continue to clear woodlands, spray agrochemicals, and exhaust aquifers (蓄水层).
U.S.Ambassador promised that the U.S. would block imports of avocados. However, this won’t restore local ecosystems. As I see it,expecting small-scale growers to protect the environment puts responsibility in the wrong place. And refusing to import Mexican avocados likely would simply lead growers to look for other markets.
In my view, importing avocados from different areas of Mexico and the world to reduce the single market share may be the most effective environmental protection strategy. In 2022,the USDA approved imports of avocados grown in the Mexican state of Jalisco. This is a start, but Jalisco will follow Michoacán’s lead unless the U.S.finds more sources and develops more avocado sorts.
32.What is a result of monocultures
A.Improvement to soil quality.
B.Resistance to pest attacks.
C.Abandoned field of local plants.
D.Pollution of water resources.
33.What does the underlined word“spurred” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Drove. B.Held back.
C.Ended. D.Depended on.
34.Which of the following does the author agree with
A.Making stricter rules on avocado exports.
B.Calling on growers to look for other markets.
C.Increasing agrochemical use for higher output.
D.Buying avocados from more areas and countries.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Avocados:A Green Choice
B.The Benefits of Avocado Exports
C.The Process of Avocado Production
D.Avocado Planting:A Worldwide Trend

Does alien life exist It’s a question many people have tried to answer. 36 AI is a type of program that allows a computer to learn from experience and perform tasks that usually require human intelligence.AI works by taking in lots of data, then making predictions based on it.
The research team used their AI method to analyze different materials and determine whether they were biotic (生物性的) or abiotic. 37
To train the AI program, the researchers gave it data on 134 biotic and abiotic materials. The program then used that knowledge to predict whether things like human hair, bones, teeth, leaves, coal, and chemicals were alive or not. 38
39 “We may be able to find a life-form from another planet.” said Robert Hazen of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington,DC.“If we do find signs of life elsewhere,we can tell if life on Earth and other planets derived from a common or different origin.” For now, though, the team is focused on ancient rock samples from Earth to learn more about life on our own planet and where it originated. For example, the tool could be used to settle a disagreement among scientists about 3.5-billion-year-old rocks from Western Australia. 40 However, others think the rocks just have unusual patterns.
The AI could also be used to examine samples from Mars collected by the Perseverance rover.NASA put this wheeled robot on the red planet to search for evidence that Mars has the right conditions to support life.Perseverance is gathering rock samples that will be brought to Earth in 2033.
A.People’s answers are various.
B.Some experts believe AI can’t tell their origin.
C.The researchers said the AI was 90% accurate.
D.The scientists also think the AI tool could detect alien life-forms.
E.Some experts believe the rocks contain Earth’s oldest fossil samples.
F.Now scientists have identified a new method for finding alien life using AI.
G.The AI also could tell whether a biotic sample was currently living or a fossil.

We first met Tom and Gee in the early days of our marriage.Someone had been returning our garbage (垃圾) cans to the garage (车库) each garbage day,and Jim and I had wondered who. Then one day we spotted him:an elderly man who lived across the street.
I baked cookies and left them on a seat outside the garage with a thank-you note. When we got home from work that day,a typed letter had replaced the gift. The letter was from Tom and explained how he had come to walk the neighborhood on garbage day, returning cans for people he barely knew.Back when he’d been fighting a war I wasn’t alive to see,his young wife,Gee,had found herself living alone.Neighbors had taken the time to handle her garbage cans so she didn’t have to,and he never forgot. Now he paid it forward by doing the same for all of us.It was also his way of sneaking a smoke while Gee wasn’t looking.
A few years after we’d moved in,Tom died.We photocopied that letter and attached it to one of our own for Gee.We told her how special Tom had been to us,how heartbroken we felt for her loss, how thankful we were to have known him.She wrote back and told us she still talked to Tom every day. When Gee invited us over to look through Christmas ornaments (装饰品),I realized how hard it must be to part with that box,a piece of Tom.
My kids sat in Gee’s living room and respectfully lifted antique Christmas ornaments out of a well-loved cardboard box.Gee stood beside them, quietly explaining each treasure.Gee told me that she and Tom built their Christmas ornament collection piece by piece during each year’s after-Christmas sale. She smiled as we left with the box.Her treasures, gathered over a lifetime, found a new home.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

Therefore,Jim and I decided to move after that year’s Christmas celebration.

Text 10
Good morning, dear teachers and classmates.(17) It is a great honor for me to stand here and share my opinion about The Importance of Sports and Games in Students’ Life.
Nowadays,(18) kids are much easier to get troubled by health-related problems and illness. That’s mainly because they do not have enough time to play and exercise. Some experts suggest that at least an hour a day should be spent in doing physical activities to keep their body fit and fine, but (19) the fact is that it is very difficult for most of the kids to have over 30 minutes a day to play sports.
When it comes to games, there are mainly indoor and outdoor games. As we all know, outdoor games are part of physical exercise that helps in keeping students active instead of sitting in one place. But it doesn’t mean that it is only right to make kids sweat out by playing under the sun.(20) Indoor games, such as chess, can help in developing brain skills and the power of focus.Thinking about something else for even a moment can result in the loss of a match.

Good morning,everyone!
When it comes to my favorite figure in Chinese history,it must be Confucius.
As is known to all,he is one of the greatest thinkers and educators in China. He established an educational system, which made an enormous impact on the development of Chinese traditional culture.Furthermore,he made many wise sayings in ancient China that helped many people learn about nature, the world, and the human behavior. To develop friendships with other countries and popularize the Chinese culture,we have set up Confucius Institutes all over the world in recent years. In fact, his thoughts always inspire me to pursue knowledge and I’d like to be a teacher like him one day.
That’s all.Thank you for your listening.

Before Christmas,we were piling up boxes of our own, planning a move. Among the boxes, the one we took over from Gee stood out.As I lifted the lid, antique Christmas ornaments came in sight.Heartwarming memories came flooding back.We couldn’t help thinking of Tom’s kind gesture of returning our garbage cans and Gee’s stories of their life together. To us,she was like family, and we couldn’t imagine how lonely she would feel during the Christmas without our company. The thought of parting with Gee was almost killing us.
Therefore,Jim and I decided to move after that year’s Christmas celebration. We wanted to make that Christmas really special. We invited Gee over. The moment she stepped in,her eyes rested on the ornaments on the Christmas tree, and each was a piece of treasure she and Tom gathered over their lifetime, reminding her of all the good old days.As we gazed at the twinkling Christmas tree,it dawned on us that the true meaning of a tight-knit community was not just about living close to one another, but about weaving hearts together with love, kindness and mutual support.
