Horses are some of the most amazing animals on Earth. They are loved for their strength and their close relationships with humans. There are more than 300 different kinds around the world, each with its own size, color, and nature.
Horses have amazing physical characteristics. Their strong, sleek (光滑的) bodies allow them to run fast and travel long distances. Their long manes (鬃毛) and tails add to their beauty. Their large, wide eyes help them see in almost all directions, helping them stay aware of possible dangers. One interesting fact is that horses can sleep while standing up. They get this ability from their wild ancestors, who needed to run quickly from dangerous animals.
Horses have also played an important role in human history. In ancient times, they were used in warfare, farming, and transportation. They carried soldiers into battle and helped farmers work in the fields. ▲ They appear in sports such as racing and dressage (花样骑术), showing their speed, power, and intelligence. What’s more, some horses work as helpers for people.
In China, the horse is one of the twelve Chinese zodiac (生肖) signs. It stands for freedom, success, and hard work. The saying “ma dao cheng gong” shows how people admire horses, as it means “success comes quickly, just like a horse running forward”. In Western culture, horses often stand for freedom and bravery.
In short, horses are not just animals — they show how nature and humans work well together. Their beauty, power, and long history with humans make them a timeless symbol of strength.

Passage C
A New Way to Keep Food Fresh
① Every year, a large amount of food goes to waste around the world. One of the main reasons is that fresh food like fruit and vegetables goes bad quickly. To solve this problem, people have used plastic wraps and refrigerators. However, these methods are not perfect.
② Plastic wraps are made from materials that are hard to break down, causing pollution. Refrigerators use a lot of electricity and cannot stop food from going bad forever. Besides, some fruits give off a natural gas that makes them ripen (成熟) faster. When stored together, this gas can cause other fruits nearby to go bad more quickly.
③ Recently, scientists have developed a new kind of plastic film (保鲜膜) made from natural materials. This new film can absorb (吸收) the natural gas given off by fruits. By doing so, it slows down the ripening process. Tests show that strawberries wrapped in this new film stayed fresh for up to 12 days, while those in ordinary plastic wraps lasted only 4 days.
④ The new film has other advantages as well. It is completely biodegradable (可生物降解的), so it does not pollute the environment. It is also safe to touch food because it is made from natural things like plants. The scientists believe this new technology could greatly reduce food waste and help protect the planet.
9.What is the disadvantage of plastic wraps mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.They are too expensive. B.They are hard to break down.
C.They cannot keep food cold. D.They make fruits ripen faster.
10.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.The natural gas. B.The new plastic film.
C.The ripening process. D.The ordinary plastic wrap.
11.How does the passage show the advantages of the new plastic film
①By telling a story. ②By giving numbers.
③By comparing with old methods. ④By asking questions.
A.①③ B.①② C.②③ D.②④
12.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.

China’s Ministry of Education (教育部) has started a strict activity. It wants to protect students’ physical health. The activity is for a common problem. 17 They also keep students in classrooms during breaks. There is a national plan. It helps make students’ bodies stronger. This activity is part of the plan. It will end these bad school habits. These habits last for a long time. Officials say this clearly. PE is students’ basic right, not a subject to be changed for exam lessons.
The ministry will check schools strictly. It will stop schools from cutting PE classes short or stopping students from going out during breaks. 18 One is real for inspectors (检查人员) and the other is fake (虚假的) for students. Schools must show their timetables to all people, to make sure students’ exercise time is not cut for safety or study results.
For years, many schools have paid much attention to the exam scores. 19 This also makes many teenagers have poor eyesight, be too heavy and not healthy. The new policy (政策) tries to fix this problem. It gives students enough time to move, relax and do exercise every day, and tells us health is as important as good study.
This activity is a new step to make education healthier and more balanced. By fully protecting PE classes and break time, China hopes to help students build stronger bodies and form a lifelong exercise habit. 20 They will make sure the plan is used in all primary and secondary schools around the country.
A.More policies and clear rules will come out later.
B.So students have little time for outdoor activities.
C.Some parents worry about their children’s safety.
D.Some schools often use PE classes for other lessons.
E.It will also stop schools from using two different timetables.

Neither Jenkins nor Florian had experience as a mechanic (机械师), but they spent days working on the car together. A local mechanic later helped with the final repairs.
