With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier. Since starting to learn, I have made good progress. The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a test of Chinese language for non-native speakers. In July 2020, I passed my HSK3 exam with a score of 100. I am now almost ready to start HSK5.
Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and worthwhile, particularly writing the characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I can’t always understand what has been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this greatly.
Despite my progress, it has still been the challenge I desire and has taken a lot of hard work. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient and persistent (坚持不懈的). The satisfaction that comes from simple things like ordering food in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it.
My biggest harvest from learning Chinese is that it’s not only doable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helps me in day-to-day life, but deepens my cultural understanding of such a colourful and beautiful country. Considering where I am now, compared to two years ago, as long as I keep studying hard, I can image a time when I’ll be able to read famous Chinese novels not in English but in the original text. So, to all my non-Chinese friends, I always say “Don’t give up. Embrace (拥抱) the challenge.”
4. What is the writer’s only regret about his language journey
A. He didn’t start learning Chinese earlier. B. He didn’t pass the HSK3 exam earlier.
C. He can’t write over 400 Chinese characters yet. D. He hasn’t been ready for the HSK5 exam.
5. What does the underlined word “insurmountable” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Interesting. B. Easy. C. Boring. D. Unbeatable.
6. What can we infer from the passage
A. The writer will give up learning Chinese soon.
B. Learning Chinese has helped the writer know more about Chinese culture.
C. The writer can already read Chinese novels in the original text.
D. The writer thinks listening is the easiest part of learning Chinese.
7. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The HSK exam is important for non-native Chinese learners.
B. Listening is the most difficult part of learning Chinese.
C. The writer shares his experience and feelings of learning Chinese.
D. Chinese culture is colourful and beautiful.

A study conducted by Cornell University examined how the use of AI in conversations impacts the way people express themselves and view each other.
The researchers have found people have more efficient conversations, use more positive language and perceive each other more positively when using an AI-enabled chat tool.
However, the group also found that when participants think their partner is using more AI-suggested responses, they consider that partner as less cooperative.
“I was surprised to find people tend to evaluate you more negatively simply because they suspect you’re using AI to help compose text, regardless of whether you actually are,” said Jess Hohenstein, the lead researcher. “This illustrates the continuous overall doubt that people seem to have around AI.”
For their first experiment, participants were asked to talk about a policy issue and assigned to one of three conditions: both participants can use smart replies; only one participant can use smart replies; or neither participant can use smart replies. Researchers found that using smart replies increased communication efficiency, positive emotional language and positive evaluations by communication partners. On average, smart replies accounted for 14.3% of sent messages.
But participants whose partners suspected of responding with smart replies were evaluated more negatively than those who were thought to have typed their own responses, consistent with common assumptions about the negative implications of AI.
“While AI might be able to help you write,” Hohenstein said, “it’s altering your language in ways you might not expect, especially by making you sound more positive. This suggests that by using text-generating AI, you’re giving up some of your own personal voice.”
Malte Jung, an associate professor, said, “What we observe in this study is the impact that AI has on social dynamics and some of the unintended consequences that could result from integrating AI in social contexts. This suggests that whoever controls the algorithm (算法) may have influence on people’s interactions, language and insights into each other.”
8. How do the researchers draw their conclusion
A. By analyzing figures. B. By making use of AI.
C. By conducting experiments. D. By completing questionnaires.
9. Which statement does Hohenstein agree with
A. AI always expresses in ways you expect.
B. Algorithm will never influence people’s insights.
C. Trust can be affected by using AI in conversation.
D. You will regain your voice by using AI in conversation.
10. How will a person feel about suspecting his partner’s using smart replies
A. Nervous. B. Uncomfortable. C. Excited. D. Puzzled.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Methods of using AI in conversations. B. Efficiency of using AI in conversations.
C. Convenience of using AI in conversations. D. Impacts of using AI in conversations.
D
Have you ever felt your mouth feel dry and rough after eating dark chocolate or drinking strong tea This sensation, known as astringency, is caused by plant compounds called flavanols (黄酮醇). While scientists have long known that flavanols are good for the heart and brain, a puzzle remained: very little of these compounds actually enters the bloodstream after digestion. If so little is absorbed, how can they still improve memory and thinking skills
Recently, researchers in Japan proposed a new idea. They suggested that the bitter, astringent taste itself might be the key. Instead of needing to be absorbed into the blood, the taste could act as a direct signal to the brain. Dr. Fujii, who led the study, explained that this specific taste stimulates sensory nerves, sending messages straight to the central nervous system. This process might activate the brain and trigger physical responses throughout the body without the compounds ever needing to leave the digestive tract.
To test this theory, scientists conducted experiments on mice. Some mice were given flavanols, while others received only water. The results were clear: the mice that tasted flavanols became more active and explored their environment more eagerly. They also performed better in tasks requiring learning and memory. Further analysis of their brains showed increased levels of important chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine. These substances are crucial for attention, alertness, and managing stress. The study found that the taste of flavanols activated specific brain regions responsible for these functions.
Interestingly, the physiological changes observed in the mice resembled those caused by moderate physical exercise. The flavanol taste acted as a mild stressor, waking up the brain and body in a beneficial way. This suggests that even though flavanols are not well-absorbed, their unique taste offers significant health benefits. It challenges the traditional view that nutrients must enter the blood to work, highlighting the powerful connection between what we taste and how our brain functions.
This discovery opens new doors for “sensory nutrition”. In the future, food scientists might design foods that not only taste good but also use specific flavors to boost brain power and improve well-being. The next time you enjoy a piece of dark chocolate, remember that its bitter taste might be doing more than just pleasing your palate; it could be giving your brain a helpful workout.
12. What puzzled scientists about flavanols before the new study
A. They were too bitter for most people to enjoy.
B. They failed to improve memory in early tests.
C. Their low absorption conflicted with their effects.
D. They caused damage to the digestive system of mice.
13. How do flavanols likely influence the brain according to Dr. Fujii
A. By entering the bloodstream and traveling to the head.
B. By sending signals through taste nerves directly.
C. By reducing stress hormones in the stomach area.
D. By changing the structure of the spinal cord slowly.
14. What can be inferred about the effect of flavanol taste on the mice
A. It made them feel tired and less willing to move.
B. It harmed their ability to learn new tasks quickly.
C. It produced benefits similar to doing physical exercise.
D. It stopped the production of essential brain chemicals.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Dark chocolate is the best food for high school students.
B. Sensory nutrition may lead to smarter food designs.
C. Bitter tastes should be removed from all future foods.
D. Physical exercise is no longer needed for brain health.

It was a rainy afternoon in April. I was looking through the attic (阁楼) for Grandma’ s old albums when my hand touched a dusty violin box hidden behind winter jackets. When I opened it, the violin brought back memories of nights when Dad used to play soft songs for me after work. Now, the violin’s strings hung loose, and its once-shiny wood looked old after years of being unused.
Downstairs, Dad’s key turned in the lock right at 6:15 pm. His work boots left dirty marks on the doormat. I saw him rubbing (揉) his right hand — he’ d hurt it last winter when he was at work. He looked up at the attic stairs. “Did you find anything cool up there ” he asked, his rough fingers tapping out a tune (旋律) on the kitchen table. “Dad, it’s nothing important really, just some old stuff up there!” I said.
Dad stopped going for his music scholarship when Mom got really sick. He went from playing in concerts to working in a factory. Every birthday, he’d say, “Maybe next year,” but then he’d quietly add, “after we pay the hospital bills.” It hit me that his dream wasn’t gone, but just silenced.
My mind raced with a flood of thoughts. Here was this violin, once a symbol of Dad’s passion and talent, now gathering dust in the attic. And here was Dad, his own dream of music buried beneath the weight of family responsibilities, his hand still aching from the injury that had kept him away from his true passion.
A wave of determination washed over me. I couldn’t change the past, but I could do something about the present. I could fix up this violin, not just as a physical restoration (修复), but as a symbol of hope and a bridge to reconnect Dad with his forgotten dreams.

【答案】Dear fellow students,
I feel greatly privileged to stand here and address my speech entitled “To know, To participate”.
Actually, cultural heritage has witnessed a nation’s history, traditions and unique characteristics. It provides clues to our past, informing our present and guiding our future. In addition, taking part in efforts to preserve historical landmarks, traditions and arts promotes a sense of pride and belonging in the community. Proposals to protect our cultural treasures can be various. Firstly, we should raise awareness across school about the significance of cultural heritage protection. Secondly, to be volunteers in tourist attractions during our spare time is without doubt a good idea.
Let’s take action now so that we can create a more harmonious society. Thank you for your listening.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1: By summer, I decided to work as an apprentice (学徒) at Mr. Kowalski’s music store. It was not long before Mr. Kowalski learned about my real purpose. I explained that I was here to fix Dad’s old violin, a symbol of his abandoned music dream. Deeply moved, he patted my shoulder and said, “This is the most meaningful apprenticeship I’ve ever seen.” He then became my strict but patient teacher, patiently guiding me to select materials, use tools, and focus on details. After weeks of hard practice, I finally restored the violin to its former glory, ready to be given as a gift to Dad on his 50th birthday.
Paragraph 2: On Dad’s 50th birthday, I handed him a large, shiny wooden box. He froze, staring at the familiar grain it was his old music case, the one he’d abandoned when Mom fell ill. Tears blurred his eyes as he whispered, “It’s... my violin. I thought it was gone forever.” His rough fingers gently following the violin’s shape. I held his rough hand and said softly, “Dad, your dream wasn’t forgotten. I just helped it find its way back.” With a shaking voice, he lifted the violin and played the gentle tune he’d played for me as a child. The room filled with warm, sweet music, and all I felt was gratitude, pride, and hope.
