Five was so exciting. Class Five did a good job and won at last. On Thursday, many students showed their artworks
such as paper cuttings, drawings and kites. And then came Friday with many science projects. Nick from Class One
showed us how to make a rainbow in a glass. The other students showed great interest in it. The Culture Festival

On her first day helping students from poor families at an after-school class in New York City, Alyssa Kapasi
saw many kids waiting for free sandwiches and fruit. The food in the school dining hall was fresh and pretty
popular. A school worker said these students never got enough to eat at home, so school meals were probably their
main food.
Kapasi, who studies at a private school, felt shocked and decided to help. “ ▲ ” she said. She and her
friends used computer skills to make an app called Food for Thought. It lets people give money to the lunch
accounts (账户) of poor students in nearby schools.
Around 20 million American kids get free school lunches, and 2 million more can get cheaper meals. If their
families don’t have money, students may go hungry or feel embarrassed to ask for help. Kapasi’s app is made to
solve this problem.
Anyone who wants to give away money can choose a school or a student, and put money to the lunch account.
Students can use the money to buy meals like other students. “It’s about dignity (尊严 ). No one should feel
embarrassed to need food help,” Kapasi said.
The app is still being made, but Kapasi’s team has got money from local non-profit (非营利的) groups. They
hope to put Food for Thought into use in New York schools by the end of the year and spread it across the country
later.
17-year-old Kapasi learned that young people could make a big change. “You don't need to be a CEO or a hero
to change the world. Just see a problem and do something to help,” she said.
19. What can Food for Thought be used to do
A. Help poor kids buy school meals. B. Teach students computer skills.
C. Sell fresh food to nearby schools. D. Help parents cook meals at home.
20. Which sentence can be put in the “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2
A. It’s difficult for kids to learn from adults.
B. It’s never too late to learn new things in our life.
C. Kids must be adults first before solving problems.
D. Kids don’t need to wait to be adults to solve problems.
21. Which of the following can best describe Alyssa Kapasi
A. Polite and honest. B. Helpful and creative.
C. Patient and humorous. D. Hard-working and careful.
22. What would be the best title for the passage
A. An App Fighting Student Hunger
B. The Fresh Food Served at School
C. A Girl from a Student to a Young CEO
D. The Truth of School Lunches in New York

①Birds may not have large brains, but some are surprisingly clever. A 2025 study reported that Cooper’s
hawks (鹰) could understand human traffic rules and use them to get food more easily.
②The study was led by an animal expert Vladimir Dinets. Several years ago, he noticed something special
while watching a hawk near a busy street. When cars stopped for a red light, the hawk would fly low over the cars.
It used the cars as cover to get close to small birds. Then it would quickly catch its food before the light turned
green.
③Dinets kept watching and found that the hawk did this again and again. It knew exactly when to wait for red
lights and when to move. This is the first time scientists have discovered a bird that seems to understand traffic
lights. Other wild birds may use buildings or trees to hide, but none have been seen using traffic rules.
④Cooper’s hawks live in many cities and towns across the United States. They are fast and feed mainly on
small birds. As they have moved closer to humans, they have learned new ways to catch food. Living in cities has
changed their hunting habits, and they have become good at using human environments to help themselves. The
study shows that animals can get used to city life in amazing ways. But city life also brings risks, such as cars, tall
buildings, and fewer natural places to live.
⑤As we can see, by learning more about these clever hawks, we can make cities safer and friendlier for
wildlife. Next time you are waiting at a traffic light, look carefully into the trees. You might see a Cooper’s hawk
waiting too — not to cross the road, but to catch its next meal.
23. What did the 2025 study find about Cooper’s hawks
A. They can fly faster than any other bird.
B. They live in natural forests and mountains.
C. They hide in tall buildings to catch small birds.
D. They use traffic lights and cars to help catch food.
24. Which word has the same meaning as the underlined word “cover” in paragraph 2
A. She covered her face with hands.
B. The cover of the book is really fantastic.
C. This lesson covers many important words.
D. We stayed behind the rocks for good cover.
25. Which of the following are risks of city life for Cooper’s hawks according to the passage
① Traffic lights. ② Cars and tall buildings.
③ Other wild birds. ④ Not enough natural living places.
A.①② B.②③ C.②④ D.③④
26. What is the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.

Do you know the connection between emotions and nose temperature A new study shows that people’s noses
get colder when they are stressed. Researchers from the University of Sussex took people’s facial temperature to
see if it changes when they feel nervous or under pressure.
Professor Gillian Forrester led the study. She used a thermal imaging camera (热成像相机 ) to record 29
volunteers’ face temperatures. First, the volunteers listened to white noise for five minutes to calm down. Then they
did two stressful tasks in front of silent strangers: giving an unplanned speech and doing mental maths aloud.
The study found that people’s nose temperature drops by 3°C to 6°C under pressure. This happens because
blood in the face moves to the ears and eyes. Since warmer areas have more blood movement, the thermal camera
clearly showed this change. After the stress ended, blood flow returned to normal within a few minutes, and nose
temperature became warm as well. Forrester told the BBC that the time it takes for a person’s nose to warm up
again may show how well he deals with stress. She believes this finding could be very useful in daily life.
Humans aren’t the only ones who can benefit from this knowledge. Stress also changes blood flow in the faces
of animals like chimpanzees (黑猩猩). Thermal cameras can help find stress in animals because they cannot say
how they feel. For example, the research team found that showing adult chimpanzees a video of baby chimpanzees
calmed them down — and their noses slowly warmed up as they relaxed.
Humans have studied primates (灵长类动物) for 100 years to better understand ourselves. Now, this study
allows us to give back by using our knowledge of mental health to improve their well-being. This makes the
research meaningful for both humans and animals.
27. How does the writer lead into the topic
A. By telling a joke. B. By sharing a story.
C. By asking a question. D. By giving an example.
28. What stressful task did the volunteers do in the study
A. Giving an unprepared talk. B. Reading maths books aloud.
C. Listening to white noise. D. Using a thermal imaging camera.
29. What can we learn about chimpanzees from the passage
A. They can share their stress with humans directly.
B. Watching baby chimpanzee videos makes them nervous.
C. Their blood flow changes when having stress, like humans.
D. Thermal cameras are useless for finding their emotions.
30. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To tell readers different ways to protect wild animals.
B. To teach people how to deal with stress properly in daily life.
C. To show how to use thermal imaging cameras correctly.
D. To introduce a study on how stress connects with nose temperature.
